MY GRANDSON Padraig loves sticky toffee pudding and I occasionally
buy one for him, but then I thought why not make one myself.I didn’t have a recipe so I googled ‘Sticky Toffee Pudding’. I came across a wonderful web site www.odlums.ie and they have recipes for just about anything you could possibly want to bake, including sticky toffee pudding. Odlums is synonyms with baking in Ireland and I can remember attending their cookery demonstrations in St. Mary’s Hall here over 30 years ago.The different sections include breads, cakes, desserts, savory, gluten free, weddings, baking for kids and Christmas. They have all the old dishes and many many new recipes. There is a recipe for Guinness Brown
Bread, carrot and pineapple cake, blackberry and walnut bread and, believe it or not, a recipe for HRT Bread. The great thing about this web site is that there is a designated facility for printing the recipes.I have spoken to a lot of people who are going back to home baking, principally because of the economy. There is nothing like the taste of home baking. If you want to start home baking, Odlums is the ideal site for you. I would like to mention a young woman, Hilary Hughes from Gowran who has just entered a ‘Chef Factor’ competition and would like to ask you to vote for her by clicking this link and liking her ‘Spanish Tapas’ http://cheffactor.ie/content/competition-entries/spanish-tapas-0If Hilary win’s she’ll cook for her class, Loreto Convent 10 year re-union.

RICHMOND Fontaine return to Kilkenny this Saturday night for a gig in Cleere’s Theatre. The band was formed in 1994 at Portland Meadows racetrack as songwriter/vocalist Willy Vlautin and bassist Dave Harding pored over the racing form and talked music between races. They took their mutual love of Husker Du, Willie Nelson, X, The Blasters, and The
Replacements and started playing music together. Before long, Fontaine was a four-piece with an avid fan-base.Their latest album ‘The
High Country’ tells an operatic tragic tale. Willy Vlautin has written an extraordinarily eccentric album. More than a concept record, ‘The High
Country’ is a songnovel: a fully realized, novel-sized story set to music. Set in a rural logging community, it is a Gothic love story between a mechanic and an auto parts store counter girl, whose secret love inspires an effort to escape the darkness of the world that surrounds them.Tickets: €20.

26 | ARTS & ENTS KILKENNY REPORTER 2 11 2011
FILM Margin CallDirector J.C. Chander
Once in a while a film comes along which summarizes an entire age. One such film is David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross”, another
is this masterpiece which shows how the financial meltdown happened in the most accessible and exciting way yet.It starts with a whole floor of traders at an investment bank being let go. One of them (Stanley Tucci) hands a fellow risk analyst (Zachary Quinto) a USB stick with his research which is unfinished. Quinto succeeds in cracking it and unleashes hell. It becomes obvious to him the economic Armageddon which we all now live in. He tells his masters and we see how the structure of the institutions did as much to cause the catastrophe as the phoney math-ematics. His bosses up the line from Paul Bettany and Kevin Spacey to finally Jeremy Irons all try to take advantage of the misery this disaster created. This movie has the whiff of authenticity about it. The director’s father worked on Wall Street his whole life. There is a lot of empathy for his subjects and by round-ing them off as human beings he makes the situation more horrible. Based on the Lehmann Brothers’ scandal it even names Irons’ character very closely after their CEO. However the fictionalised version manages to make all the arcane concepts and ideas very understandable. What is truly shocking is the fact than that many of people in charge don’t understand how the system works either but only exploit how the market reacts.
There is an incredible cast involved here. It is so refreshing to see a lot of faces who have spent the last decade portraying cardboard villains actually use their talents. What is most surprising is Kevin Spacey’s turn. Channelling his idol Jack Lemmon’s everyman he creates a character that is the moral fulcrum of the movie and the most flesh and blood creation of his entire career. Another actor Paul Bettany reminds us of his explosive beginnings in “Gangster No.1” –here he is superb as a charismatic trader who must square his loyalty with his ambition. But it is really Iron’s movie- all lizard charm and Machiavellian cunning. It is his best ever portrait in a gallery of masterpieces. What we really learn from this film is that science was corrupted in America. This caused a chain reaction through the financial system as engineers were using their minds to build risk based products to fool people instead of steel bridges to help humanity. Those above them however didn’t understand how the magic of their numbers worked and they destroyed their reputations to make even more money when the meltdown became obvious. The system has been destroyed by the greed of the many and the American dream achieved by the very few and shows why traders and bankers will be allowed to con-trol us all forever more unless we change. This is a movie for anyone who wants to understand why there is less money in their life at the moment. Unlike the dreary analy-sis and whinging that clogs up the airwaves and internet it is brilliantly scripted and performed. It will make you very angry and hopefully next time an investment comes your way that will be at the cost of another you will refuse. Or at least make you look beyond the voodoo of the numbers. – DARRAGH BYRNE
