ENGL 1101, M/W PAULDING — FINAL PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION Due Wednesday, December 9 by 6:15 PM via email Grade value: 250 points (25% of overall course grade) Graded components An important note upfront: The two essay revisions listed below form the core of and are indeed the purpose of this assignment. The point breakdown below is based on the assumption that all final portfolios will include the two required revisions. As such, portfolios that do not include the two revisions will not be accepted for grading, and portfolios are required to pass the course. In other words, please do not use math here in an attempt to justify cutting corners. It is impossible to earn a passing grade (or a grade at all) on the final portfolio without including both revisions in earnest. o Professional Presentation: 25 This category is essentially all or nothing. If you submit the portfolio on time as a Microsoft Word attachment (.doc or .docx file)—not as a OneDrive document and not copied directly into the body of the email—and if it’s clear you attempted to follow the formatting guidelines, you’ll earn all these points. You’ll earn none of them if you submit the portfolio late and/or as anything other than a .doc or .docx file. Please also use a standard 12-point, black font, standard margins (1” all around), and double-spacing. You could lose points here for not doing these things in increments of 5. o Formatting/Organization: 50 This category is related to the one above but focuses less on timeliness and the file submission itself than on individual components. I’ve included an example of a final portfolio at the end of this assignment description document. Your portfolio should include, in the manner of the example provided, a title page (10 points), a table Martin 1

ENGL 1101, M/W PAULDING — FINAL PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION

Due Wednesday, December 9 by 6:15 PM via email

Grade value: 250 points (25% of overall course grade)

Graded components

An important note upfront: The two essay revisions listed below form the core of and are indeed the purpose of this assignment. The point breakdown below is based on the assumption that all final portfolios will include the two required revisions. As such, portfolios that do not include the two revisions will not be accepted for grading, and portfolios are required to pass the course. In other words, please do not use math here in an attempt to justify cutting corners. It is impossible to earn a passing grade (or a grade at all) on the final portfolio without including both revisions in earnest.

o Professional Presentation: 25

This category is essentially all or nothing. You could lose points here for not doing these things in increments of 5.

o Formatting/Organization: 50

This category is related to the one above but focuses less on timeliness and the file submission itself than on individual components. I’ve included an example of a final portfolio at the end of this assignment description document. Your portfolio should include, in the manner of the example provided, a title page (10 points), a table of contents (10 points), numbered pages (5 points), and logical order (5 points), with each component beginning on a new page (5 points each, 20 total).

o Final Draft 1: 50

This should be the latest, fully revised, fully edited, polished, professionally presented version of your first choice between the personal narrative, process analysis, or argumentative essay. Edits will be graded objectively. Each grammatical/mechanical error will

Martin 1

result in a 5 point deduction at no more than a loss of 30 points (unless it is clear that the essay has not been edited at all, in which case the entire component could earn a 0). Revisions will be graded subjectively based on 20 points. To earn all 20, essays must show an earnest attempt to improve upon the content of the original, based on my feedback, through development, extension (if needed), and attention to matters of style and voice. Essays that demonstrate an attempt at revision will earn 10 of the 20, and essays that show no evidence of revision at all will earn 0 of the 20, even if they have been edited.

o Final Draft 2: 50

This should be the latest, fully revised, fully edited, polished, professionally presented version of your second choice between the personal narrative, process analysis, or argumentative essay. Edits will be graded objectively. Each grammatical/mechanical error will result in a 5 point deduction at no more than a loss of 30 points (unless it is clear that the essay has not been edited at all, in which case the entire component could earn a 0). Revisions will be graded subjectively based on 20 points. To earn all 20, essays must show an earnest attempt to improve upon the content of the original, based on my feedback, through development, extension (if needed), and attention to matters of style and voice. Essays that demonstrate an attempt at revision will earn 10 of the 20, and essays that show no evidence of revision at all will earn 0 of the 20, even if they have been edited.

o Statement on Revisions: 25

This a brief 200 – 300-word statement explaining how you revised the two essays you’ve included in your portfolio and why you feel they represent your best work in the course. It will be graded for completion and specificity. Grammar and mechanics will be graded at a deduction of 5 points per error up to 15 points if the error in question is a result of lack of attention (not capitalizing a proper noun, for example) or if it is one I have pointed out previously at any point in the semester.

o Self-Reflexive Essay: 50

You’ll have the full class time on Wednesday, December 2 to write your self-reflexive essay. I’ll be providing and discussing the guidelines for this very straightforward essay assignment in class on Monday, November 23. You’ll just write the essay in class, save a copy, and copy it into your final portfolio. You don’t need to submit a copy outside of including it in your final portfolio. This means that if you aren’t in class when we write it on November 23, or if for some reason you don’t finish it in the given time, just finish

Martin 2

it on your own time and include it here. It should be in the ballpark of 350 – 500 words.

o Miscellaneous: The final portfolio is also where you will include extra credit such as the Old Red Kimono critical review as well as additional “second chance” essays for students who do not have two essay grades they would like to double.

Overview: The final portfolio is a means of providing a showcase for your best work of the semester, an opportunity to demonstrate the principles of revision and an understanding of the writing process, and a chance to reflect and provide feedback on the course. The final portfolio will consist of four key texts: two final essay drafts(fully revised and edited) of your choice between the personal narrative essay, the process analysis essay (including your poem), and the argumentative essay; a statement on the two essay drafts explaining how you revised them and why you believe they represent your best work of the semester; and a newly written self-reflexive essay. As noted above, professionalism and attention to formatting and organization will also factor into grading.

FAQ

What is the date, time, and location of our final exam period?o Wednesday, December 9, 5:00 – 6:15 PM, Bagby 112

Do I need to be present in class the day of the scheduled final?o Because this portfolio is taking the place of an in-class exam and because

you are submitting it via email, the short answer is no. That said, I do recommend that you plan to be present to make sure that I’ve received your portfolio and in case you have any questions. I will also have full grade updates for those who would like to discuss them.

Can I use the allotted final exam time period to organize or work on my final portfolio?

o You may use the allotted time to email your portfolio, though I do not recommend planning to use the time to organize or otherwise work on your portfolio except perhaps to give it a final proofread. There will simply not be enough time in the final period to work on your portfolio in a substantial way. This portfolio is worth 25% of your course grade, and as such I recommend having it completed and ready to go at least a full day before it is due.

What if I don’t turn in my final portfolio? Can I still pass the course?

Martin 3

Page 4: 1101 FIN… · Web viewIf you submit the portfolio on time as a Microsoft Word attachment (.doc or .docx ... guidelines for this very straightforward essay ... your final portfolio.

o No. Per the syllabus, a final portfolio must be turned in in order to pass the course.

Can I turn in the final portfolio late?o No. Per the syllabus, I cannot accept the final portfolio late. Following

the final exam period, I will be on a deadline to complete and submit course grades and will not have the time to handle late portfolios. Of course, I am human, and I have no interest in anyone failing the course due to submitting the portfolio at 6:20 rather than 6:15, for example. This kind of lateness will negatively impact the professional presentation component of your final portfolio grade, certainly, but I don’t believe that alone should lead to anyone failing the course. Essentially, I will be emailing everyone who has not submitted a portfolio by the time I leave on December 9 to check in and see what’s going on, and if I don’t hear from you within a reasonable time following that, the window to submit your final portfolio will be closed, and I will write to let you know that this is the case. But the takeaway is this: The final portfolio is 25% of your course grade and is required to pass the course. Please be professional, recognize it as important, and submit it on time.

May I send you my final portfolio for feedback before submitting a final copy for grading?

o Yes, but my ability to give you feedback is only guaranteed if you schedule an in-person conference with me and send me the portfolio at least five days prior to the scheduled conference. Individual conferences for this purpose will likely take place in the writing center or the library after class. This means that the last date I will be available for conferences of this purpose is Monday, December 7, which in turn means the last date to submit your portfolio early and arrange a conference for this purpose is Wednesday, December 2. I will not be able to give substantial feedback the day the final portfolio is due largely because you will not have the time to incorporate any substantial feedback.

I have a question that isn’t listed here. What should I do?o Please ask! Feel free to see me before or after class, to ask during class if

relevant to the discussion at hand, or to email. However, please ask by December 7 at the latest. I will likely not be able to address anything substantial after that date.
