Media, technology, society
Media as an integral part of our lives Silverstone (1999: 2): the media as part of the
general texture of experience As such the media must be seen as a process, i.e.
‘as a thing doing and a thing done’, an ongoing and hence historical process of communicating, (and entertaining, informing, connecting, persuading etc).
As a historical process integrated into our lives, the media are social and dynamic, i.e. they are more than technologies, and they change and evolve across time.
![Page 5: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Media, technology, society
Technology: in or out of society? Neutral or already socially and politically implicated?
Three views Instrumentalist: technology is neutral Substantivist: technology has a logic of efficiency
and instrumental rationality Constructivist: technological outcomes are the
result of a complex set of social, political, cultural and technological factors
![Page 7: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Technologia: lub w społeczeństwie? Neutralne lub już społecznie i politycznie uwikłana?
Trzy poglądy Instrumentalista: technologia jest neutralna Substantivist: technologia posiada logiki
efektywności i racjonalności instrumentalnej Konstruktywistycznej: technologiczne efekty
są wynikiem złożonego zestawu społecznych, politycznych, kulturowych i technologicznych czynników
![Page 8: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Media, technology, society
Societies as dynamic entities in the context of modernity
Beck, Giddens, Lash (1994): reflexive modernisation as the ability of societies to purposely and thoughtfully re-invent and direct themselves towards certain goals.
But also: societies in the throes of contingent and unpredictable factors, e.g. environment, wars, political instability etc.
![Page 9: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
![Page 10: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Media, technology, society
Weaving these threads together we obtain a set of close interrelations: Media cannot be studied outside their social and
technological context Technologies must be understood as embedded
into specific socio-historical contexts The future of any given society cannot be predicted
nor controlled, but by looking at particular societies’ media technologies, we can gain crucial insights into their workings of such societies.
![Page 11: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
![Page 12: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Media, technology, society
Studying the media means studying society from a particular perspective: that of the interface between technology, society and communication.
Understanding media means understanding the dynamics of society, what it prioritizes, what it holds dear, what is abhorrent, irrelevant, or marginal, as well as what changes across time.
![Page 13: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
![Page 14: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Changes, shifts, transformations
To speak therefore of *new* media implies that there are some shifts or changes taking place
Shifts in: Society: what are the main characteristics of
current societies, how do people relate to each other, live their lives together, conduct their lives etc.
Politics: what does politics mean now, how has the political process changed, what type of new politics is emerging? What is the relationship between new media and globalization?
![Page 15: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
![Page 16: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Changes, shifts, transformations
Economics: is (industrial) capitalism still the main form of economic organisation? How are work patterns and practices changing?
Culture: in what ways are cultural practices changed by the new media? What is the relationship between different media?
Personhood/Identity: how do these change in the age of the new media?
![Page 17: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
![Page 18: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Questions of Power
Early debate: is the internet/new media ‘good or bad’? (see Marien, 1996)Good, because:
More democratic, more information, more education, more business opportunities (friction-free capitalism, Gates, 1995), more individualism (Negroponte, 1995) but also more connectedness (Rheingold, 1993) etc.
![Page 19: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
(patrz Marien, 1996)
Dobrze, ponieważ: Bardziej demokratyczną, informacji, edukacji,
więcej możliwości biznesowe (tarcie wolnego kapitalizmu Gates, 1995), więcej indywidualizmu (Negroponte, 1995), ale także bardziej connectedness (Rheingold, 1993) itd.
![Page 20: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Questions of Power
Conversely, the internet is ‘bad’, because:Information overload, deskilling, digital
divide(s), undermining morality, creativity, literacy, linked to volatile economy etc.
Debate became irrelevant as internet/new media spread and diversified, but questions of evaluation remain.
![Page 21: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
![Page 22: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Questions of Power
Power always implicated and the perspective here is a critical one:What are the new power configurations?Who profits from the transformations
associated with the new media? Who is left out and marginalized? What life patterns and practices become
obsolete and with what effect?
![Page 23: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Moc zawsze zarzutów i perspektywy jest krytyczny jeden:
Jakie są nowe konfiguracje zasilania? Kto zyski z przemian związanych z
nowymi mediami? Kto jest w lewo i zmarginalizowanych? Jakie wzorce życia i praktyki stają się
przestarzałe i co skutkiem?
![Page 24: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Conclusions
The new media are an inextricable part of everyday life, involving at once social, communicative and technological processes.
Studying the new media means studying transformations at all levels.
Studying the new media requires critical thinking, not only description and tracking of changes, but posing questions of power.
![Page 25: 1.1 why study the (new) media](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052906/558c570cd8b42a720e8b45a6/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Nowe media stanowią nierozerwalny element codziennego życia, z udziałem naraz społeczne, komunikacyjne i procesów technologicznych.
