THE GUIDE POST DECEMBER 2015 | Issue 3  1 11   THE GUIDE POST DECEMBER 2015               IN THIS ISSUE    Dear San Jose ASHRAE Members and Friends, I hope this newsletter is finding you well and that everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday. We should have a great winter holiday season. Don’t forget to make your year-end Research Promotion donations. Contact our chapter RP chair, Matt Pacione at [email protected] with any questions. Thank you to everyone who attended our Fall Student Night and Distinguished Lecturer (DL) presentation. We hosted our ASHRAE Society VP Chuck Gulledge from Region IV. Chuck presented his DL presentation on “Integrated Building Design” and we had record breaking attendance. There were over 50 students in attendance! Our next technical meeting will be our Annual Joint Meeting with the Golden Gate chapter on Dec. 9 th at the San Mateo Marriott. This technical meeting will feature Peter Rumsey. Peter will be presenting a lecture called “Don’t Forget the Friction”. A study by Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) found that over a typical year half of HVAC energy is consumed by pumps and fans. For all of this energy use, we still tend to focus on chiller and boiler efficiency when we are designing HVAC systems. Peter will discuss his experience with designing dramatically lower friction pump and fan systems. December is also Member Promotion Month. Any current member that brings a non- member to the Joint Meeting and completes their registration by the end of December will have their January meeting registration waived by the chapter. The promotion applies to both the new member and the member sponsor. Our next BOG meeting will be held on Jan. 13 th at 4:30pm (just before our technical meeting.) All members are welcome to attend. We are always looking for new volunteers, committee members, and committee vice chairs. If you are interested in volunteering and getting more involved, please send me a note at [email protected]. Please continue to provide our Chapter Transfer Technology Committee (CTTC) Chair, Bill Schoening, and President Elect, Jai Jayaraj, with fresh and informative technical program ideas for this year. ASHRAE Journal Invites You to a FREE Selkirk Webinar, Broadcast Live Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. EST

Overview Title: Factory-Built Chimney, Vent and Exhaust Duct - Best Option for Many Applications Date: Tuesday, December 15, 2015 Time: 02:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

Duration: 1 hour

Summary This webinar will present the many applications for UL tested and listed factory-built chimney, vent and exhaust ducts. The presentation will highlight ways engineers can use these fully code compliant systems to improve safety, performance, and reliability as compared to conventional methods involving field fabrication. Some common applications include heating appliance venting, commercial kitchen grease duct, stationary power generators (gen-sets/engines and turbines) and ventilation duct. The presentation will also briefly speak about the basics of products of combustion, gas appliance categorization, and the availability of chimney sizing programs offered through manufacturers' distribution network.

PDU/CEU certificate: Selkirk Corp, upon email request, will issue a signed company certificate of your personal attendance after answering question(s) about the presentation. The presentation is not registered with any state, so check your state’s continuing education requirements if a credit can be applied with this webinar.

Presenter: Keith Page is the technical product manager for Selkirk Corp’s commercial and industrial venting and chimney. He began his HVAC career 14 years ago in product engineering and field application support before moving into a product manager and sales support role. He currently is a committee member of NFPA 211 and sits on several UL venting and chimney technical committees. He is also a member of the West Michigan ASHRAE Chapter. Mr. Page holds a BSME from Michigan Technological University and a MBA from Grand Valley State University.
