SCHOLARSHIPS OVERVIEW

Scholarships are the highest awards granted at the Headmaster’s discretion to those displaying excellence in the scholarship assessments.

The seven scholarship categories are outlined in detail on the following pages. Please note that all candidates sit the following assessments:

• An online test for cognitive ability • Sedbergh Prep School English Paper • Sedbergh Prep School Mathematics Paper Academic Scholarship candidates will sit the following additional examination:

• Sedbergh Prep School Science Paper

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

The award of an Academic Scholarship is based, upon the candidate’s performance in the assessments, as well as reports from their current school.

In addition to the academic assessments, each candidate will have an interview with the Headmaster or other senior teachers within the School.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Music Scholarships are awarded to pupils who display musical excellence or potential. The standard of performance expected is for at least one instrument at Grade 3 or above of The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Grades and another instrument at Grade 2 or above. However, evidence of ability and true potential is of equal importance to actual examinations passed.

The practical examination will last approximately 45 minutes and will comprise:

• The performance of two contrasting pieces on each instrument • Sight-reading tests • Aural tests, to include sight-singing • Interview with the Director of Music

DRAMA SCHOLARSHIPS

Drama Scholarships are awarded to candidates who demonstrate outstanding creative thinking and can present an innovative and emotive performance piece.

Candidates will be asked to present a two minute monologue of their choosing and to engage in a short improvised drama session.Candidates should bring a portfolio of work to include any relevant qualifications gained e.g. LAMDA examinations and evidence of involvement in productions. These will be discussed at interview with the Head of Drama or Headmaster.

SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS

These may be gained by those displaying exceptional aptitude and potential in one or more sporting discipline. The candidates will be required to present themselves for a practical assessment of ability in at least one of the major team sports of cricket, hockey, netball or rugby.

Outstanding ability in individual sports such as cross country, swimming or shooting will also be taken into consideration.

There will also be an interview with the Director of Sport or Headmaster.

DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS

The Design, Technology and Engineering Scholarships are intended to identify children who may have the potential to pursue a career in these fields.

Candidates will be required to produce a piece of work on the day of interview, which may be some design work or a manufactured outcome and supporting evidence. Candidates should also show a portfolio of design work, which can include the rich history of design, an understanding of iconic design, design ideas, development sketches and/or models, technical skills, craftsmanship, CAD/CAM work, innovation, manufactured work completed outside of school or work that displays engineering principles. Other evidence that demonstrates an enjoyment, keen interest and passion for design, technology and engineering would be welcomed.

These portfolios will be discussed at interview with the Head of Design, Technology & Engineering or Headmaster. Evidence of attainment in other complimentary subjects, such as mathematics and science will be welcomed alongside the other scholarship evidence.

ART SCHOLARSHIPS

Art Scholarships are awarded for outstanding performance in the visual arts. Candidates will be required to produce a piece of work on the day of interview which may be from one of the fine art disciplines. Candidates should also show a portfolio of artwork, which can include paintings and drawings done from observation and imagination.

Other work such as prints, photographs, ceramics and sculpture would be welcomed. These portfolios will be discussed at interview with the Head of Art or Headmaster.

ALL-ROUNDER SCHOLARSHIPS

All-Rounder Scholarships are awarded to those whose all-round attributes will ensure that they make a major contribution to the life of the School, including leadership. In addition to the academic assessments, each candidate will be required to undertake the following:

• An interview with the Headmaster or other senior teachers within the School

• Assessment in at least two additional areas from art, design, technology & engineering, drama, music or sport

• A teamwork/leadership assessment

A scholarship application form will be sent to you, along with further information, and a date for the assessment will be confirmed.

Please note that assessments usually take place in the November of your child’s time in Year 6, prior to their September entry into Year 7. However, please do contact us for alternative assessment dates and entry points if required.
