UK in online safety net bid

WORLD’S BEST: Hancock

LAWS will be introduced to make the UK the safest place in the world to be online, Culture Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

A new code of practice to tackle bullying, intimidating or humiliating online content and a bid to keep tabs on online abuse could be included in new laws.

Work with social media companies to protect users has had mixed results, according to Mr Hancock.

Proposals were outlined by the Government last year on imposing an industry-wide levy on social media fi rms such as Facebook and Twitter to fund measures tackling online harm.

It is understood the move will be subject to a further round of talks with the sector and charities before any decision is made on pushing ahead with it.

Mr Hancock said: “Digital technology is overwhelmingly a force.

“People increasingly live their lives through online platforms so it’s more important than ever that people are safe and parents have confi dence they can keep their children from harm.”

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said: “Terrorists are abusing these platforms to recruit people and incite atrocities.

“We need to protect our communities from these heinous crimes.”

A dentist had to extract 10 rotten teeth from one.

Each parent was jailed for two-and-a-half years by a judge at Plymouth Crown Court after admitting four child cruelty charges.

The girls have since been fostered.

TRAFFIC police in Wolverhampton pulled over a car carrying planks which covered the driver’s windscreen.
