Jesus has given his followers, who are the church, a very specific mission: Make disciples of all nations. Generally, we do a good job of reaching people with the gospel message around the world by financially supporting organized ministries in far off places. Where we do not do as well in reaching people with the gospel message is right here in our communities. Our mission to make disciples of Jesus in our community is no less important than making disciples in far off lands. Yet we tend to not have as many organized ministries that truly focus on evangelism, or inviting people into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Dan Held, Marty and I are a working to open a LifeTree Café™ at the Y. What is LifeTree Café™? It is a conversation café where people from all walks of life can gather to discuss relevant and current topics of the day. All voices and opinions are welcome. The purpose of LifeTree Café™ is not to tell a person that they are wrong, but to gently and lovingly persuade them to consider the biblical perspective. It is also a place where the “crew” of the café can develop relationships with the café guests. It also provides an opportunity for the unchurched or de-churched guests to really get to know us rather than believing how we are so negatively portrayed in the media. LifeTree Café™ requires a few teams of volunteers to make the weekly one hour sessions happen. There is a hospitality team whose responsibility is to provide refreshments of coffee and other drinks along with snacks. If you are not comfortable interacting with guests, then this is a way you can participate and support LifeTree Café™. There is a team of table leaders who sit at each table to help guide the guests and make sure no one person dominates the conversation. There is a team of presenters who lead the discussions and play the videos associated with the topic of the week. Please consider how you might be a part of the outreach ministry that truly provides the opportunity to reach people who might not come to a traditional church setting for Jesus. LifeTree Café™ is a seed planting ministry. If we expect to see a harvest for the kingdom we must plant seeds. It also takes time for a seed to sprout and grow. So LifeTree Café™ will not bear immediate fruit. At my last church it took about a year before people started coming to church. So doing a ministry like LifeTree Café™ requires patience and persistence. If you would like more information on LifeTree Café™ I encourage you to visit the LifeTree Café website at www.lifetreecafe.com. More information about the Life-Tree Café™ at the Y will be provided in the near future. Please begin to pray for this new ministry at SG – and how you might be a part of it! Blessings & Peace, Pastor Barry

THOUGHTS FROM BRANDT

This month, the thoughts did not come in time for publication. Perhaps they will drift in in time for the December edition ...

NAME TAG SUNDAYS In an effort to help Pastor Barry & Pastor Marty learn the names and faces of everyone here, we are asking that you wear a name tag each Sunday this fall/winter. It will help them learn names and faces and it could help some of the congregation as well! We ask that you clearly print your name on a name tag. Please don’t forget to sign in the pew pad as well during this time.

BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB RESUMES NOVEMBER 20

The first book of the new season will be discussed Sunday, November 20 at 6:00 pm in room 101 of the Taylorsville campus. It is "The Soulmaking Room" by Dee Dee Risher. The publisher writes, "In this personal, funny, and vulnerable narrative, Risher is unrelentingly honest about money, race, marriage, class, parenting and spirituality. This powerful, poetic book shows how grappling with universal experiences of human life can make people more resilient, deeper, and more true to their identity. “The Soulmaking Room" is for anyone who wants to look life right in the eye and come out more whole. Copies of the book are on display at both campuses. They can be purchased from the Taylorsville office for $13.00. The Book of the Month Club is open to anyone willing to read the book ahead of time. Questions are emailed to participants a few days ahead of the meeting and serve as the basis for discussion. The group is a very safe place for all

of us to express our beliefs and questions and doubts concerning our spiritual journey. I hope you will give it a try. Retired Pastor Ken Clark (667-5409).

TOUCH THE LIVES OF CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD AND SPREAD THE

WORD! HOW CAN WE DO THIS? OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD - OCC delivers shoeboxes filled with prayers, love, faith filled scripture messages as well as toys, school supplies, and hygiene items to needy children all over the world. Children are also given the opportunity to learn more about Christ through a 12-lesson discipleship program called The Greatest Journey. What do we need to do? 1. Find a shoebox or buy a plastic box in a similar size (or find several!) If you want, decorate it to make it more fun for the chidren. 2. Fill them with: a. toys b. school supplies c. hygiene items d. Pray for the child who will be receiving your shoeboxes

Bring the boxes to the Taylorsville Gathering Area or the YMCA lobby. When : 10/30 – 11/13/16 Flyers with detailed info will be distributed on 10/23 and on the tables in the lobby and gathering area. For more information, go to www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child. Praise God for this opportunity to bring smiles to the faces and eternal joy to the lives of needy children throughout the world.

GRUB AT THE GROVE FREE COMMUNITY MEAL

Tuesday, November 15, 5-6:30 pm Are you feeling a little nudge to “do” something at church? Why not consider helping at Grub at the Grove? This is a free community meal that is served once a month in the Taylorsville Activity Center and has been supported by Sulphur Grove volunteers for over eight years. So far we have been able to rely solely on donations for purchasing the supplies that are needed each month. Many of the tasks related to Grub at the Grove are ones in which the amount of time required is only for an hour or two. We need help with moving and setting the tables to get the dining room ready, displaying the desserts, clearing the tables, cooking, and cleaning up in the kitchen. Some of these work areas have jobs within them that are not very time consuming. Nevertheless, it takes a number of people to have everything ready to serve a dinner for approximately 200 guests and then clean up afterwards. In addition, the experience of being a part of this type of ministry is just beyond words. To see all of the people patiently waiting to share in a meal and then sit down and enjoy fellowship and good food with one another causes us to pause and thank God for our blessings. This is a very practical way to be in His service by providing a warm meal, friendly hospitality, and a kind word of love, comfort, and acceptance. Sometimes we even have special music. So be sure to mark your calendars now (it is one week early this month) and get ready for a fun evening. If you would like more information, have questions, or would like to participate please contact Carol Tatone at 657-7831, [email protected], or sign up in the Taylorsville pew pads. Please consider sharing your time and talent with Grub at the Grove. Thank you for your continued support.

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH “We are a ‘mission church.’

We believe in reaching out to those in need locally, nationally and globally.” A NOTE OF THANKS & REPORT FROM THE “THE HOMEFULL

MISSION TEAM” For it is said “Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” Proverbs 14:31 On Saturday October 1, 2016, SGUMC HomeFull Mission Team members prepared and served lunch to 53 women guests and staff at the St. Vincent’s De Paul’s Hotel facility. Afterwards, Meghan Vincent along with Al Matts and two St. Vincent’s staff members helped serve lunch to 51 family members (mostly children). Before serving lunch to the ladies and families, we were also able to provide the family section manager with several boxes of desperately needed sizes 6 diapers, a large case along with several packages of baby wipes and also a few items of infant clothing and children’s toys. A very special thank you goes to all of the Sulphur Grove United Methodist Women and the Hickory Dickory Shop participants for the overwhelming amount of different donated kinds of hygiene items given to the Good Samarian bin. These extremely generous donations allowed to us to be able to provide Mercy Manor and St. Paul’s UMC with a truck load of much needed hygiene items, clothing, plastic bags, and other miscellaneous items. I want to thank the SGUMC congregation for all of the donated items placed in “The Samaritan Bin” for the homeless and those in need. These are just some of the desired donations: ◊ Money For Bus Passes/Tokens (Place your financial

gift in the offering clearly marked “HomeFull Bus Passes”)

◊ Infant/Children clothing, size 6 Diapers, Training Pants, Toilet Paper, Cleaning Supplies & Laundry Detergent

◊ Men’s & Women’s Deodorant ◊ Feminine Hygiene and Oral Hygiene Products God has so richly blessed each of us in so many ways and wants us to be “Good Samaritans.” Please consider helping by serving or donating items for the homeless and for those in need. Please continue to keep those who are homeless and in need, especially the children, in your daily thoughts and prayers. For more detailed information regarding donations, please contact Allan Matts at 890-5457 and for more information regarding volunteering to help cooking and serving lunch, please contact Jane Elam at 233-4939. We are in desperate need of more volunteers to help serve.

GRIEF MINISTRY PREPARING FOR THANKSGIVING

In the October issue we ask those who are grieving to consider some questions in preparing for the holidays coming in the next months. Here it is November and with the usual family holiday of Thanksgiving a few weeks away, we want you to know we are available and are praying for you. We hope each of you have a blessed and comforting time with those people you choose. Some suggestions to possibly help: ♦ Make the plans that are best for you at this time. ♦ Make plans that you can easily do. ♦ It is not necessary to do what the family has always

done, do what is comfortable. ♦ Do something for someone else. ♦ Take Care of Yourself. The nicest place to be is in someone's thoughts, the safest place to be is in someone's prayers, and the very best place to be is... in the hands of God. Our loved ones are certainly in the best place to be.

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT “THE SAMARITAN” DONATION BIN?

For many years, there has been a red plastic bin out in the gathering space at the SGUMC Taylorsville campus. This bin was initially called “The Other Place - Dayton’s only Daytime homeless Shelter Donations.” The purpose of having the red plastic bin was to provide our congregation with a location that they could place their donated items to help and support the men, women and children staying at The Other Place daytime shelter. Over the years, many support organizations that we at SGUMC supported in the past have evolved. The Other Place is now “HomeFull” and has the mission of working to end homelessness by providing housing, services, advocacy and education. The St Vincent’s Hotel went from a strictly night time only shelter to a 24-7 shelter. We have also been adopting other Dayton Area organizations that help, support and serve the homeless as well as individuals and families in need. We now are donating items to the Dayton area homeless and less fortunate through organizations such as HomeFull (Men’s & Woman’s Gateway Shelters), St. Vincent’s Hotel, Mercy Manor, Oasis House, St. Paul’s UMC, South Park UMC and Wesley Community Center. The reason for calling our bin “The Samaritan” is based on Luke 10 - The Parable of the Good Samaritan - the one who had mercy. We believe that this title more accurately describe the growth of our mission from our initial The Other Place to now include all of the organizations that help, support and serve the homeless as well as individuals and families in need.
