What Tasman people use to spread on their toast new royal Kate Middleton has reportedly been spreading on her face – much to the surprise and delight of the local producers. The New Zealand Herald re-ported that the royal bride may have been using Nelson bee ven-om in a face treatment ahead of her wedding to Prince William late last month. • The once a year opportunity to celebrate and recognise local volunteers has arrived, with nominations opening for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. Nomi-nations opened on Monday and the awards, which are run in conjunction with the Nel-son City and Tasman District Councils, are open to all voluntary groups and organisations working to make the Nelson Tasman region a better place to live. This year more than $6,500 is up for grabs. Nomination forms are avail-able from the Nelson City Council or Tasman District Council offices or service centres or by calling Pip Tschudin at TrustPower on 0800 87 11 11.

• The ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond is gearing up for the opening of its new fitness centre on May 30. The gym has been devel-oped to provide a joint swimming pool and fitness centre facility in Richmond, widening the choice for recreation and well-being for the community. It will be managed by Com-munity Leisure Management (CLM) on behalf of Tasman District Council, which owns the pool and fitness centre.

This week we talked to St John about their new GPS system so we ask locals what the newest piece of technology they had purchased was.

Tim Flintoft, Richmond.

“I stick with what I’ve got. If you buy something new it’s likely to go bust and the price of modern technology is so high.”

Claire Barnes, Wakefield.

“We bought a new TV because the other one broke. We’re happy with the new one, espe-cially the husband, he loves the big TV.”

Ron Robinson, Richmond.

“I’ve had all my stuff for about 20 years and it’s still going strong.”

Alison Nicholls, Hope.

“Not recently, but we bought a new TV. We wanted one that hung on the wall, a flat screen, and the other one broke.”

CELEBRATION: Local women Katie Pratt, Nikki Shattock, Anna Shone, Nicole Lukies and Chantelle Savage first met when they were all under the age of one and have known each other for most of their lives and held a joint 30th birthday over the weekend at the Hope Hall. The ladies say now they’ve celebrated their 30th together they are looking forward to travelling to Fiji for their 40th together. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

was doing with our honey, but we have a fair idea now.”Terry says enquiries about the mask have been coming in thick and fast, so much so the family-owned business, based near Kohatu, is developing its own mask and is thinking of calling the new product ‘Kate’s Cream’. “We just got some testing back on Friday and will launch it soon, we’ve had so many requests for it we thought it would be silly not to make one, since we make the bulk of the product.”Nectar Ease was made to help with arthritis and joint mobility and has also been devel-oped into a cream by Nelson Honey. The ingredient that makes the honey, cream and face mask so beneficial is the extra bee venom which is collected by placing a glass screen on top of hives as small electrical cur-rents run through it, which encourages them to sting the glass, from which the venom is collected. Deborah Mitchell was reported as saying: “The bee venom completely changed Dannii Minogue and my other clients love it so much that we have waiting lists.”

letics, hockey, softball, netball, basketball, table tennis, archery and football facilities.Non-ionising radiation, a by-product of AM/FM wave lengths and the same type of radiation that runs off a cell phone, is being emitted from the mast at levels up to 1341 kHz, according to the NRL report. Radiation that high can cause body tissue to heat up and raise body temperatures, according to the Ministry of Health website.Director of Mainland Television Gary Watson says it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. Gary has worked with broadcasting frequencies for 40 years and says the fear of the “big unknown” is enough to warrant its removal. “We know that the experts can get it wrong,” he says.Discussions about the mast have been ongo-ing since 2002 and three weeks ago a letter ad-dressed to Radio NZ was sent out by Sport Tas-

man and Nelson City Council hoping to spark final negotiations. This coincides with sporting groups requesting its removal in recent submis-sions to the council draft annual plan. Aldo says the actual dollar cost to relocate the mast or build a new one is not “insurmountable” but the biggest hurdle is Radio NZ agreeing to sell the land back to Nelson City Council in re-turn for a new area.Other options for the location of the mast in-clude Wakapuaka, where a Radio Rhema tower already sits, or into Tasman. Nelson City Coun-cil parks and facilities manager Paul McArthur says the removal would be beneficial for the long term development of Saxton Field. He says the current mast is meeting all necessary standards but said “it's not ideal”, when asked about the ra-diation risks in such a highly populated area. Nelson City Council and Sport Tasman hope the reply from Radio NZ to arrive in the coming weeks.

DEVIATION: Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and Nelson

mayor Aldo Miccio were at the opening of the Richmond

Deviation cycle track on Monday afternoon. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Old meets new at cycleway openingMonday’s official opening of the Richmond deviation cycle track saw Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne don a top hat and tails.Richard took on Nelson may-or Aldo Miccio in a time trial penny-farthing race along 100 metres of the new track and thought he would dress the part. He was safety conscious though, and swapped the top hat for a helmet when he hopped on the old-style bike. Richard had had a few practice runs before the big event so was

feeling quietly confident about the result. The cycleway, which was the missing link between Wakatu Dr and the Railway Reserve, is a 1.6 kilometre dedicated off-road facility. It will also form part of the Tasman Cycle Loop which is the first instalment of the na-tional cycle track introduced by Prime Minister John Key last year. The track has also been future-proofed should the deviation need to be widened.West Coast Tasman MP Chris

Auchinvole believes the track is beautiful and the NZTA, who funded the project, should be proud of the final product. The track will now link Stoke and Richmond and provide a safe, uninterrupted transit be-tween the two suburbs. The important project will now keep cyclists, walkers and run-ners safe from the 20,000 vehi-cles that travel along the devia-tion each day.“This will reduce congestion. It’s a fabulous asset for the Tasman and Nelson districts,” says Chris.

Finding the quickest route is essential business for St John, so the addition of 23 Navman GPS units in its vehicles is certainly a big help.Twenty-three St John emergency vehicles across Nelson and Marlborough have been fitted with Nav-man GPS navigation units – thanks to the generosity of the Freemasons. The devices will help St John drivers find the quick-est way to reach its more than 300,000 patients a

year.Barry Howell, St John dis-trict operations manager, welcomed the donation by the Nelson Freemasons.“These units will assist our officers with up-to-the-minute route maps and directions. We are grate-ful for the Navman units as every second counts when getting to an emergency.”Barry says the units had the latest maps which would help officers find addresses in some of Nelson’s remote rural locations.

I just need a bit of support to get there,” says Brendon. He says “it’s great” that Daniel and Shane have supported him and donated memorabilia. Both bids close tonight. New Zealand rugby’s great photographer will be at the Nelson Provincial Museum this weekend, helping launch his exhibition in what is being de-scribed as a “real coup” for the city.In Rugby World Cup year demand for the Peter Bush exhibition has been unprecedented and mu-seum chief executive Peter Millward says Nelson has been fortunate to get it. The exhibition is being opened by Peter Bush and rugby commentator Keith Quinn this Friday night and will feature dozens of his iconic photo-graphs of the All Blacks, both on and off the field.Peter Bush started working on the sidelines as a young cadet for the New Zealand Herald in 1949, at a game between the All Blacks and the Wallabies. Since then, he has p h o t o g r a p h e d hundreds of matches at home and overseas, en-joying privileged access to the All Black teams, both on and off the field. The exhibition also includes a set of mural sized works and a DVD in which Peter Bush recounts the stories behind his iconic images. The exhibition is visiting 13 New Zealand centre’s this year and is sponsored by Canon NZ nationally and the Collingwood RFC locally. The exhibition will run in Nelson from May 14 until July 17. From then a digital window display of Peter Bush images will run continuously from the museum’s Trafalgar St window during the Rugby World Cup, which has been made possible with support of Harvey Norman Electrical and Bowater Motor Group.

Jet setting Jess gets ready to take on the worldNot every 14 year-old has the dream of helping people. But for Waimea College stu-dent Jess Pickering a trip to South East Asia in July will see this dream come true.As part of the school’s group in-volved in the World Challenge Jess and 13 other students will spend a month in Vietnam and Cambodia experiencing the culture and helping the locals. But it is the locals here in Tas-man that have helped Jess raise the money for the trip. In total each student has had to raise $7,200 plus other costs includ-

ing injections and spending money. Local businesses like Super Liquor and NBS have got behind the teenager. The Waimea Weekly has also donat-ed Jess a page in this week’s pa-per where she will collect all of the money from the advertis-ers. (See page 22 for this.) “Eve-ryone wants to help, whether they’ve helped me or someone else in the group.” Jess says she knows when she gets back she will see things differently. “I’m going to be so much more grateful then what I was before.”

Not all teenagers think like this, but Jess says all she wants to do is help people. “I know how fortunate I am and I know a lot of people don’t have what I have.“I want to say ‘yes I can go overseas and I can do that for myself, I can do that again’.Jess says she knows a lot of kidsare more worried these days about being at home and be-ing able to go shopping. “They don’t look at things how I look at them and I’m happy about that. It’s good to see things dif-ferently.”

As Margaret Westley pulls her ingredi-ents out and gets ready to start cooking she has to collect herself and do some-thing she hasn’t done in years – reach for a recipe book.Margaret has been diagnosed with de-mentia and forgetting her favourite reci-pes is just one side affect the Richmond woman is noticing. Margaret, 67, was diagnosed last year af-ter suffering a series of bad nightmares. She also sometimes forgets what day it is, what time it is and what she is intending to say. And it’s only going to get worse. While still just mild, there is no cure for dementia and Margaret is resigned to the fact that as time passes, so to will her memory worsen.Tony says his wife would often go to say something to him and then forget what she had in mind. But the pair work together to make life a bit easier. “We’ve actually combined it together and what Margaret doesn’t remember I try to.”Although the future looks bleak for Mar-garet, Tony believes his wife is handling things pretty well despite not being able to do things she has done for years. “It is tough to watch but you have to be toler-ant with this sort of thing,” says Tony.Margaret says not remembering how to cook or what day it is is upsetting but knowing what’s ahead is heartbreaking. “But we just have to take it one day at a time. It takes a long time to accept it and the process of accepting it has been quite difficult.”This week is Alzheimer’s Awareness and Appeal Week and Margaret is just one of 43,000 New Zealanders that has either Alzheimer’s or demen-tia. Nelson field worker Heather Lackner says there is fantastic support available, through the Alzheimer’s Society, but that continued support

relies on donations from the public. Collectors will be in Richmond, Stoke and Nelson all this week.Margaret says she is lucky to have the support of her husband and her brothers and sisters, who give her a call most days to see how she is get-ting on and says just because she had dementia it doesn’t mean she needs to put her life on hold. She says while her recipe books are getting more of a workout these days, she is still able to cook a hell of a meal and hopes to continue to do so for some time.

Mapua Waterfront Precinct

An open forum to discuss the Mapua Waterfront Precinct will be held at the Mapua Boat Club on Wednesday 25 May 2011 from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

As the Community is aware the Mapua Wharf area is important to the District and there have been a number of concerns and issues relating to these spaces and other adjacent sites. The Waterfront Park will provide a fantastic facility to the region and there is a need to ensure the adjacent areas provide an equally pleasant experience. Some work has already been done in 2008 and the team wants to hear of any other ideas as we start to plan the integration of the different spaces with the Waterfront Park.

To do this we need your ideas, thoughts, con-cerns and input into this process. An open day is planned for 25 May 2011. Please come and gives us your constructive and positive views to improv-ing this space.

This meeting provides an opportunity for the com-munity to look at the plans and discuss issues and ideas on a one-to-one basis with the advisory group and Tasman District councillors. For more information Selwyn Steedman, Trans-portation Network Engineer, Phone 03 543 7213.

Even a casual glance at the TV News lately would soon convince us that we are living in troubling times. None of us are naive enough to believe we are going to witness instant solutions in the many trouble spots around the world. Sometimes the scale of the devastation either from natural disas-ters or civil unrest and war can leave us numb and immobile. While our homes have not been crippled by earthquakes,

nor our people ravaged by the kill-ing and maiming of war, we do face lots of stressful issues, that left unattended can cause untold dam-

age, not only where we live in the present, but going forward into the future as well. With this in mind, Hope Community Church presents to you HopeFest 2011. HopeFest is a week long series of events being held from the 16th – 22nd May, aimed at addressing some of the stressful situ-

ations facing people and families in our community.

Celebrating a healthy life-style was on the cards this Mothers Day for several hundred local women.Over 200 ladies from across the district partici-pated in the annual Jenn-ian Homes Mothers Day 5km walk around Rich-mond on Sunday in great conditions.Saturday had been a wet one but Sunday morning dawned dry and just a lit-tle overcast, perfect for a stroll for many mother’s and their daughter’s, even the odd grandmother was thrown in for good meas-ure. The walk started at the Jennian Homes office in Richmond and made its way along the cycle path towards Stoke. The ladies then turned back and headed along Main Rd to the finish line. The event, which raises awareness about heart dis-ease, especially in women, was proudly supported by local company Jennian Homes who run the event

The Top of the South VMX club held their an-nual Ray Anderson Memorial earlier this month in Tadmor. More than 60 riders turned up to a fine day with full start gates for all the classes. This year it was the turn of the Pre 75’s to race for the Ray Ander-son trophy, which was fitting as this era of bikes were one of Ray’s favourites. Christchurch’s Rob Salby dominated the Pre 75-78 combined class winning all three rounds on his 1971 BSA550 to take the Ray Anderson and club championships for the Pre 75 class. Rob Anglesey and Ross Duncan had a tight battle in the Pre 78 class with no one rider dominating

completely and both having to race hard all day with Duncan piping Anglesey in the last race to take the overall win. By the end of the day some rough sections emerged, hammering both the rider and bike. The fast pace took its toll on several bikes and riders including a long push back to the pits for Mark Culverwell after his YZ250 ceased out on the track. Many riders are now facing long nights in the shed to get bikes ready for the third round of the Mainland series starting in Linkwater on June 19. Although played at a frenetic pace the Wanderers Taylors A and Nelson College B game was a low scoring encounter – with neither team reaching double figures in any of the quarters.Wanderers have a more experi-enced roster and had an abun-dance of possession but failed to capitalise on the score board.Nicole Gardiner was an effec-tive feeder at wing attack be-fore moving to the circle for the final quarter. She worked the circle well to find good space to score six of her team’s seven goals.Emese Bismark had a sound first half at wing defence and after moving to centre in the second half had a great tussle with the young, talented Nicole Drummond. Goal defence, Imogen Smith toiled to cre-ate turnover ball and worked to deliver ball to her offensive third. The college finished strongly to win the second half, however Wanderers took the game 27 – 25.It took Garin Senior A a few minutes to find their way when they met Prices Pharmacy B who in comparison had a

strong start.Garin played some great straight lines with centre, Tess Eden a pivotal link through court shouldering a hefty work load.Shooter Dakota Sigley dis-played a safe pair of hands to pull in some difficult ball and was the dominant shooter net-ting 18 of her team’s 24 goals. The teams were locked at 14 all at half time however, Garin lost a little momentum in the third quarter and the new shooting combination did not have the same understanding which al-lowed Prices a five goal lead.Garin, to their credit looked more focussed in the final pe-riod and finished strongly but came up short 24 – 30. Overall they could definitely be awarded a pass mark for their first hit out and could be a little disappointed that they did not get within five goals to get a bo-nus point.Cheyenne Sigley was a strong competitor - the “jack of all trades” as she donned no few-er than three bibs during the game. Abbie Powick was solid at wing defence and gained a fair amount of tip ball but must look to adjust her distance in future.

Waimea College are preparing for one of the biggest rival matches of the year this weekend against Nelson College. The young squad are taking on the city team at Nelson College from 12.30pm this Saturday after a strong win over Marlborough Boys last week-end. “It’s nice to get a win over a boy’s school when we’re co-ed,” says manager Jim Matthews. The score was 13 all for a while but Waimea scored in the closing minutes to secure the win with the final score sitting at 20-13.Try scorers were Sean Clementson and Connor Karena. Luka Roden was on good form with the boot and converted both tries and kicked two penalties.“The boy’s were happy with the win, it’s what they needed, it’ll help with the confidence,” says Jim.The team have been trying a number of different combinations, which has been working well. The squad is made up of quite a number of young boys who are generally smaller than the other rugby players they come up against.“The forward pack especially doesn’t have the size others have so the boys have been working hard on their fitness to overcome this size differ-ence,” says Jim. The coaches are happy with how the squad is shaping up and the improvement the boys are making from week to week.Jim says the Nelson game will be a tough moun-tain for the team to climb.“After that is St Bedes, which will be even tough-er.”The final game in the first round will be against newest Press Cup contender Nayland College.

FAST DRIVER: Richmond’s Brandon Dove, 10, and dad Glenn at the Kartsport Nelson track in Redwood Valley on Saturday night. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Club champs go off with a bangLocal drivers triumphed at the Kartsport Nelson club champion-ships over the weekend despite treacherous conditions. The cadet class was the only divi-sion on Saturday night that didn’t have a local driver win.The junior restricted class was won by Jamie Smith. The winner of the junior class was won by the only fe-male in the group, Tenial Rassmu-san from Hope.Tenial has recently returned from the nationals in Invercargill and she took this experience on to the track with her on Saturday. “She cleaned up. We gave her an award for the most outstanding drive of the night,” says club president Pete Fitzgibbon. The senior classes also saw locals

triumph. The senior Yamaha class was won by Matthew Butchard and the rotax light division was domi-nated by Brendon Gridley, who won every race. The rotax heavy class was won by Duncan Barrett but Blenheim driver Taylor Forbes put up a good fight. The Yamaha club class was won by Nelson’s Kevin Baker but it was a close contest between him and Aaron Adcock.Pete says the turnout on Saturday night was good despite the terrible weather and the racing under lights made for a few spills. The next big meet for the club is the New Zea-land Central Sunbelt Champion-ships held on June 4 and 5. Drivers will come from around the country and compete over the two days.

Although Nelson was declared a city in 1858, it was another 16 years be-fore it had a City Council. In its early years the town was ad-ministered by a Board of Works and this body remained in existence till 1874 when the first City Council was established. It wasn’t elected, the Board of Works members be-came the Council overnight. They then selected one of their own,Joseph Field Dodson, as Mayor. Dodson, businessman and brewer,

disagreed with the council over the city’s funding system, and resigned his position a year later. However he returned to the post for a further four-year term in 1877.To read more Snippets of History, purchase your copy of both volumes from Marsden House for $15 each. Waimea Old Boys 2011www.wobrfc.co.nz

Rain makes for a hard days work Weather conditions went from one extreme to the other within a week for the Super Liquor division two Waimea Old Boys team. After playing under blue skies and sunshine last week the team had to deal with a field heavily drenched during the week and on game day. The visiting Murchison side are a team always known for their tough physical approach to the game and this game was no different. With the conditions dictating the style of play for both teams the game never really gained any momentum, an early handling error from the Murchison back line allowed first five Bradley Crisp to pick up the loose ball and win the race to the try line to give Waimea an early lead. From then, both teams battled each other and the elements, the score remaining five nil until 15 minutes from full time. After gaining enough field position and go forward,

flanker Jesse Walker slipped through the defensive line and released his unmarked winger Dan Smith who crossed for Waimea’s second try. Murchison never gave up the battle and spent the last period of the game continually threaten-ing Waimea’s try line. After multiple infringements Waimea received a yellow card and the visitors were able to score their only points in the last play of the game. Waimea showed they had learnt from their loss in similar conditions a couple of weeks ago, showing a big improve-ment in areas that they came up short in during that game. Tireless efforts in the forward pack from prop Tamaio Pi-ripi, lock Hamish Ballagh, flanker Jesse Walker and man of the match number eight Scott Lines laid the platform for a hard fought, but well deserved victory. Next week the team welcomes Huia to Jubilee Park for round three of the division two competition. Kick off is at 1.15pm.

Shift in game times this weekendWaimea Old Boys division one game against Huia at Jubilee Park this Saturday is kicking off at 2pm, not the usual 3pm.The division two side kicks off at 12.30pm.

The Waimea Old Boys senior women side were shocked to be kept off their try line against Stoke over the week-end and will looking forward to a week’s respite. The team will need to re-group and enjoy a bye this weekend before playing Central women the week after.Stoke were able to come away with a 22-0 win over the ladies despite some moments of clarity. The Stables WOB division one squad played Riwaka at home and were also unable to pull out a win, going down 5-0. However, the Stables WOB thirds team switched things around and were able to triumph over Stoke 14-6.The thirds and B’s will be hoping to continue their win-ning form while other WOB teams will be working hard this week to pull a win out of the bag. Your horse needs to feel the warmth this winter too

RICHMOND SADDLERY: Owner of Richmond Saddlery Clinton Day on Amherst Gold Sover-eign at the Rai Valley A & P Show. Photo: Tracey Anderson Photography.

You wouldn’t leave your best mate out in the cold without a jacket, so why do it to your horse? As we move through May and into winter it is impor-tant our larger four legged friends have the warmth and

protection they deserve.Richmond Saddlery, locat-ed at 8B McGlashen Ave in Richmond, can provide any-thing you need for your horse this winter. The winter months can get very cold here in Nelson and

it’s essential to provide your horse with a quality water-proof rug to keep them out of the elements. We have a wide variety of brands and designs available for you to choose from.Clinton says making sure

your horse rug is still waterproof is necessary before you put it back on your horse. We sell water proofers to re-proof existing covers for the winter season ahead. Have a ripped cover we, do cover repairs as well, that’s just another thing we offer as a service.”For the rider Richmond Sad-

dlery can also provide water-proof jackets, warm jackets, riding vests, socks and reflec-tive gear. “It’s really important to have reflective gear, be seen this winter, especially if you’re riding on our roads for safety reasons,” says Clinton.Anything you could possi-bly want this winter for your horse is available at Rich-mond Saddlery. Richmond Saddlery say they are proud to be the major sponsors of the Nelson area Richmond Saddlery Winter Series Dressage, with the next event taking place at Rough Island Equestrian Park this Sunday. “It has been great to see so many riders attend and we’ve only had one event so far,” says Clinton. The business is locally owned

and the staff believe they are friendly and ap-proachable, especially if you’re interested in be-coming involved with horses. “We can give you good sounds advice to get you started.”So come in and see the friendly team at Richmond Saddlery, they can help you out with any horse related queries you may have. Clinton and Athol provide a personal guarantee with any product you buy from them. “We are professionals and experts in the field, we’ve had years of experience and we sell quality gear that’s going to last the distance, it’s not going to fall apart,” says Clinton.Richmond Saddlery is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and have a later closing time on a Thursday, being 5.30pm. The shop is also open on a Saturday from 10am to 1pm. For more information about Richmond Saddlery and the services they provide phone Clinton or Athol on 544-4177.
