11 Division Community Bulletin May 2013 1 11 Division Toronto Police Service 416 808 1100 2054 Davenport Road Toronto ON M6N 1C8 ELEVEN DIVISION A message from Peter Lennox, Superintendent, 11 Division One of my New Year resolutions for 2013 was to use social media to get more timely information out to the 11 Division community. Twitter, Facebook and other social media are here to stay, and rightly so. They are powerful tools that enable people to connect and share information widely and immediately. The benefits for the policing community are many, and include the ability to share information quickly and broadly, touching individuals, groups and organizations. Information flows in both directions. Social media create opportunities to network, and to build or strengthen relationships. Additionally, the cost for its acquisition and ongoing use is not a burden on individuals or the taxpayer. While we’re on the topic, Deputy Chief Peter Sloly will be making a presentation on social media in our station’s Carleton Village Community Room on May 10, as part of the TPS Police Week opening ceremonies which start at 11:00 a.m. I’m honoured and delighted that the ceremony, which normally takes place at Headquarters, is being held at our station this year. The theme of the 2013 Police Week is “Walk the Digital Beat: A New Era of Engagement”. Also as part of the Police Week celebrations, 11 Division will be hosting an open house on Saturday, May 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be many fun and interesting displays and a BBQ put on Police Community Partnership 11/12. (Please see page 10 of this bulletin for more details). According to one of Sir Robert Peel’s Principals of Law Enforcement, that ”The police at all times should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police…”, social media help us achieve this principle. Our goal is to share information that is fresh and relevant, and to engage people of all ages and from as many groups across the community as we can. Peter Lennox, Superintendent No. 11 Division

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

Criminal + Victim + Opportunity = Crime

Reduce your risk of being a victim of crime by eliminating opportunities.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

1. Don’t leave valuables in plain sight in your parked vehicle. It draws

attention that you don’t want. During the summer months the city’s green spaces, High Park and the Lakeshore water front parks, for example, are wonderful places to visit and will draw many visitors. Unfortunately, amongst those visitors are a small group of people who are looking for an opportunity to take advantage of you. Whether you go for a leisurely stroll or 10km run your unattended vehicle is vulnerable. Park your car in a highly visible, well frequented parking spot. Ensure the spot is also well lit if it’s going to be there during hours of darkness. Leave most valuables at home and take only those that are necessary for your outing. This includes large amounts of cash, credit cards and identification. When necessary keep valuables in the trunk placing them before your arrival at your destination.

2. Discourage break and enters into your home or business by trimming back trees and bushes around your property. Special attention should be paid around windows and doors. All foliage on a tree between ground level and the 6 or 7 foot mark should be removed. Bushes should be no higher than 3 feet tall. Remove areas of concealment on your property.

3. If you’re at home but outside working or relaxing in your yard, please remember to ensure all doors and windows are closed and locked to prevent criminals from entering your home. Each year, several homes are entered by thieves during daylight hours when residents are home but outside. Personal safety and property can be better protected by locking doors.

4. Recently, a number of purses have been stolen from shopping carts in stores around the Division. Several times, wallets have simply been lifted

Page 9: 11 Division Monthly Bulletin May 2013 - torontopolice.on.ca · 11 Division Toronto Police Service 416 808 1100 2054 Davenport Road ... Also as part of the Police Week celebrations,

from an open purse. It is easy to get distracted and forget about crime prevention. Please remember, a purse can be a much sought after trophy for thieves – cash, credit cards, identification, telephones, car keys, house keys and so much more.

5. Mobile phones are valuable, both to you and potential thieves, so take care when using them in public. Avoid having them on display, or talking on them in busy areas where they can be easily snatched. Tips Be aware of your surroundings Don’t leave your phone unattended Hide your phone away when you are not using it Do not text and walk at the same time Use a hands free unit Password protect your device or use the security lock code, or PIN

feature, to lock your phone Use an anti-theft software Do not to keep your personal information in your phone Make a record of all your phone information including your phone

number, the make and model, color and appearance details, the pin or security lock code and the IMEI number (on GSM phones). Keep this information in a safe place. (IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity and is the 15 digit number unique to your phone, it can be found by looking beneath the battery or by keying in *#06# on many phones).

Add a security mark onto the device If your phone is stolen, report the loss immediately to both your service

provider and the police and have the phone disabled
