“… We thought it would be wonderful to share in [the Life of the World to Come] together through some outdoor Trinity gatherings that are closer to your neighborhood. While our ambition is not as f ine-grained as the pony express, we have organized four events in October that offer an opportunity to gather as a church community a little bit closer to home than on Copley Square. If your home is close to Copley Square, don’t worry - in November, we’ll be hosting a f inal gathering at church as well.”

Come and See: Trinity Inside and OutSundays, 10/17 and 10/24, 10 am

During our morning formation hour for these two October Sundays we invite you to take a closer look — inside or out! Programming will repeat on these two Sundays to offer as many as possible a chance to participate in both.

Inside: Located in the lower level of the Parish House, the “Come and See” exhibit uses words, images, and numbers to narrate the history of slavery and the slave economy in

New England, highlighting connections to Trinity Church. The exhibit also includes a wall of inspiring icons and artwork depicting the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color who are martyrs and heroes of our faith, from Hebrew

Testament times into our own day. We can admit groups of seven for 15 minutes each, and masks are required. Enter the church from the Clarendon Street Vestibule for these Sunday morning visits.

The “Come and See” exhibit is also open 11 am-3 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and 12-2 pm on Sundays, with no pre-registration required.

Outside: During our months of worship on Copley Square, many of us have developed a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the west front, including the complex carvings and iconography of the porch itself. End our season of outdoor worship by taking a guided tour of our exterior, and perhaps notice a few things you may never have seen before. Gather right on the Square in front of the porch at the conclusion of the 9 am Holy Eucharist.

Collect of the DayThe Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Amen.

Reading Hebrews 5:1-10

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,

“You are my Son,today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 91: 9-16Because you have made the Lord your refuge, *and the Most High your habitation,There shall no evil happen to you, *neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over you, *to keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you in their hands, *lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and adder; *you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet.Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I deliver him; *I will protect him, because he knows my Name.He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; *I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him to honor. With long life will I satisfy him, *and show him my salvation.

We will pray the psalm in unison.

Gospel Mark 10:35-45The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,    the Father, the Almighty,    maker of heaven and earth,    of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,    the only Son of God,    eternally begotten of the Father,    God from God, Light from Light,    true God from true God,    begotten, not made,    of one Being with the Father.    Through him all things were made.    For us and for our salvation        he came down from heaven:    by the power of the Holy Spirit        he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,        and was made man.    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;        he suffered death and was buried.        On the third day he rose again            in accordance with the Scriptures;        he ascended into heaven            and is seated at the right hand of the Father.    He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,        and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,    who proceeds from the Father and the Son.    With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.    He has spoken through the Prophets.    We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.    We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.    We look for the resurrection of the dead,        and the life of the world to come. Amen.

12

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made f lesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrif ice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrif ice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctif ied by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with [ and] all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the f irstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the HolySpirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now andfor ever.AMEN.And now, as our SaviorChrist has taught us,we are bold to say,

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the BreadAlleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrif iced for us;Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me!I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved;how precious did that grace appearthe hour I f irst believed!Through many dangers, toils and snaresI have already come:‘tis grace has brought me safe thus far,and grace will lead me home. When we’ve been there ten thousand yearsBright shining as the sun,We’ve no less days to sing God’s praiseThan when we’d f irst begun.
