Weekly Newsletter November 19, 2017 From the Principal’s Desk Happy Thanksgiving On behalf of our school community, I wish all of our Saint Joseph Catholic School families, and our extended families and friends, a most blessed and joyous Thanksgiving. For those of you on the road during the Thanksgiving break, I wish you safe travels, until you return. I am grateful to our hardworking staff, to our dedicated and experienced teachers, to our generous parishioners, our supportive and caring parents and guardians, and finally to the most precious gifts of our community, our children. May God continue to bless us and may each of you enjoy our Thanksgiving break. May this be a restful and prayerful time for your families as we give thanks for all of God’s gifts. Don’t forget to take some time as a family to discuss with your children the many blessings of each day, and why you are grateful. I thank each you for your dedication and support, and ask you to continue to be ambassadors for SJCS by sharing your positive, Christian spirit throughout our community. • Advent Jesse Tree – Giving and Sharing with Others

Advent begins on Sunday, December 3rd, and our students prepared Jesse Tree ornaments for this year’s Giving Tree. The preschool students came to the office and helped decorate by hanging the ornaments. Students from each class stopped by the office to choose an ornament. Once again, we will be assisting four social agencies in our community: Hope Family Services, Palmetto Migrant School, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Samoset Elementary School. Each ornament on the tree has the name of the agency and a gift We do not expect expensive gifts—under $20 is preferred. Gift cards can be $5. We do not want this to be a burden for our families, but rather to instill in your children the true meaning of Christmas by giving to those in need. Participation is optional so please return your tag to the office if you cannot provide a gift this year, or if you have several children and prefer to only have one tag for your family. Remember: Do not wrap gifts. Adhere tag firmly to the gift with tape. Return the gift with the tag to school by December 5. Members of the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council will be delivering the gifts to the agencies, during the week of December 11th. We will be collecting books for Samoset Elementary students in K through Grade 5. Most students in this school read below their grade level. Please look at your books at home and bring in gently used or new books. We need many books for these children. JESSE TREE TRADITION FOR FAMILIES The Jesse Tree has a long history when a special ornament was hung each day during the Advent season. The ornaments represented stories about the characters of the Old Testament from Adam and Eve to the birth of Jesus. At SJCS, we hung all of the ornaments at one time, but we encourage you to look at your child’s ornament and the Scripture reading at the bottom. You may want to visit the Loyola website for more information about the Jesse Tree and how to share this tradition with your family during Advent. www.loyolapress.com/the-jesse-tree.htm

2017May Christ our Savior bring light into the darkness of this world, and to us, as we wait for his coming.

I will spend a few extra minutes in prayer today.

I will do my work well today and with joy for God.

I will secretly do a kind act for someone.

I will donate like-new toys and books I’ve outgrown to needy families.

I will obey my parents, my teachers, and others in charge of me.

I will honor Mary in a very special way today by being cheerful.

I will be kind in a special way to someone I do not like much.

I will try to show special love for someone who seems unhappy or lonely.

I will work hard today and do my best.

I will ask Mary to help me make room for Jesus in my heart.

I will keep calm and not lose my temper when I am pushed or treated rudely.

I will do some work for my parents to help them rest after a day of work.

I will eat more of what is good for me today and less of what is not.

I will try to be more thoughtful of others.

I will find a quiet place and sit for a few minutes, just letting God love me.

I will not complain today, even if I must do things I do not want to do.

I will try to be patient today.

I will make a special effort to be kind to those I find it hard to like.

I will speak kindly to all I meet today.

I will be helpful at home these last days before Jesus’ birthday.

I will give a smile to all I meet today.

I welcome Jesus with great love and offer him all the good acts I have performed and the prayers I have said during Advent.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    ¡Feliz Navidad!
