THE LONDON CONVERSATIONS

“ The London Conversat ions”™ brought together a diverse group of g lobal thought leaders to discuss crit ical issues of business, pol i t ical and economic s ignif icance.

Co-sponsored by McGuireWoods, Church Mutual Insurance Co. and the Pula Group this diverse gathering, representing a wide range of academic, corporate, f inance

and pol i t ical organisat ions, debated how to best to meet some of the key chal lenges of our t ime, with a part icular focus on issues confronting women and

people of colour.

The dai ly programme enhanced networking opportunit ies , fostered new relat ionships and opened a dialogue between key inf luencers to lay the

foundations for future ground-breaking init iat ives.

OPENING NIGHT

A special ly commissioned evening performance by Bal let Black opened the proceedings at London’s Sadler ’s Wel ls Theatre. The company was founded by Cassa Pancho MBE in 2001 to provide classical and modern dance opportunit ies to bal let dancers of the African diaspora and Asian descent.

The performance blended the highest tenets of c lassical bal let with the dynamism of contemporary and modern dance. Demonstrat ing the crit ical themes of “Seeing ourselves in Art ” and “the Power of cultural representat ion”, the performance was the perfect opening to “ The London Conversat ions”.

Conversat ions” commenced its

substantive programming with

unparal leled access to one of the world’s most

important economic inst itut ions as the

delegates opened the London Stock Exchange

(LSE).

The post-market opening reception was hosted by Ibukun Adebayo, (Co-Head Emerging Markets Strategy, LSE) and Ian Greenstreet , an advisory board member of the LSE.

Attendees discussed the LSE’s engagement with mult inat ional companies and in part icular i ts service provis ion to emerging markets. The LSE also launched its new publ icat ion: “Companies to Inspire Afr ica 2017”.

Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of London, Andrew Parmley.

The future of Brit ish pol i t ics - with the dramatic results of the 2017 General Elect ion fresh in

delegates’ minds and the leadership of the UK Parl iament yet to be determined - was the focus

of the morning ’s discussions.

Professor Melanie Eusebe interviewed Gina Mil ler, who launched the Brexit legal chal lenge

against the UK Government ’s refusal to grant Parl iament a vote on tr iggering Art icle 50. Ms

Mil ler opened with a passionate defence of her role in pol i t ical l i fe, including her recent

campaign to increase the youth vote in the UK. Seventy per cent of UK young people voted in

this elect ion; and the UK Parl iament gained its largest ever representat ion of women and

people of colour.

ANALYZED THE IMPACT THIS GROWINGTECHNOLOGY WOULD HAVE ON

ECONOMIES AND DEVELOPMENT

Tom’s presentat ion was fol lowed by a discussion on the tech industry with,

Gloria Monfrini (Operat ions Manager at Uber Technologies Inc.) , Dr. Nneka

Abulokwe (Executive Director SteriaGroup), Joysy John, (entrepreneur) , and technology entrepreneur, Vin Murria, of

HG Capital .

The morning session concluded with an address from Tom I lube, entrepreneur and educational phi lanthropist , on art i f ic ia l intel l igence - a theme that permeated much of the conference as delegates debated the far-reaching impacts of new technology on the economy, jobs, communit ies and development.

The day drew to a close with a candid conversat ion between Former President Karume of Zanzibar and Charles St ith, former US Ambassador to Tanzania.

President Karume emphasised the importance of long term investment in Africa and engagement by the diaspora.

PALACE OF WESTMINSTER

The evening reception held at The Palace of Westminster was hosted by the RT Hon. Dawn Butler (MP, Labour).

Ms. Butler, who boasted the largest margin of victory of any MP in the recent elect ions provided a personal perspect ive on the current state of government in the UK.

Bank of England and focused on global economic development and

growth.

The day began with a welcome from Jonathan Curt is , (Head of Human Resources, Bank of England).

I t was fol lowed by a discussionon diversity and inclusion in the

f inancial sector led by Diane Ashley of the Federal Reserve

Bank, New York.

Matthew Hal l , (McGuireWoods, Brussels) and Dr. Joanna Perkins, (CEO, Financial Markets Law Committee) gave a presentat ion on the potential impacts of Brexit on the f inancial and regulatory environment in the UK.

School of Economics and an adviser to the Bank of China) addressed the perspect ives and impact of China

on global economic development.

Dr. Amy Lehman, of the Lake Tanganyika Float ing Health Cl inic, Bernard Katompa

Niger, Bisa Wil l iams gave their perspect ives on the prospects for

African economic growth and debated approaches to African economic

development.

David Blood (Co-Founder, Generat ion Investment Management and former CEO Goldman Sachs Asset Management) spoke on sustainable invest ing.

Economists Trevor Wil l iams, (Professor and former Chief Economist , L loyds Commercial Banking) and Shamik Dhar (Chief Economist and Director for Economics, Foreign and Commonwealth Off ice) took a stat ist ical approach to investment, growth and jobs in the coming years.

The "London Conversat ions" was pleased to host a group of young Amos Bursary Scholars over the f ive-day event.

The Amos Bursary was set up to address the under representat ion of young Brit ish men of African and Caribbean Descent in the UK's higher educational inst itut ions

and professions.

The "London Conversat ions" was able to offer high level networking opportunit ies, leverage meaningful support and provide exposure to a wide range of thought

leadership, to the group.
