    Type PRS Programmable Resettable SectionalizerThe Programmable Resettable Sectionalizer (Type PRS)is a device which has built-in intelligence to discriminatebetween temporary (transient) and permanent aults ondistribution systems. It operates in conjunction with aback-up automatic circuit recloser or a reclosing circuitbreaker. It is specifcally designed or the protection

    o single-phase lateral lines. When installed at thebeginning o a lateral, it virtually eliminates nuisanceoutages. Its unctional concept and design greatlyimprove system coordination.

    Traditionally, the individual laterals are protected byexpulsion-type used cutouts. These cutouts are intendedto operate only during a permanent ault on the lateralby careully coordinating the use links with the time-current characteristics o the upstream automatic circuitrecloser or reclosing circuit breaker. Unortunately,coordination between use links and upstream automaticcircuit reclosers is unachievable above a ew thousandamperes. Coordination, i achieved on paper, can easilychange as the ault current increases due to largercapacity acilities, addition o larger substations orreconductoring. Errors in re-using is another way thatsystem coordination can be lost.

    A sectionalizer is a protective device which has no time-current characteristics. With no use curve to intersectrecloser time-current characteristics, the coordinationrange is extended to the maximum interrupting rating othe upstream protective device (Figure 1).

    This practical unction makes the sectionalizer an idealdevice or application on single-phase laterals whereavailable ault currents make coordination unachievablewith uses. Electronic resettable sectionalizers providethe utility with an economical and easily retrofttablemethod o enchancing protection o the distribution

    system. An electronic resettable sectionalizer installedat the start o a lateral, in place o a use, can greatlyenhance system coordination service continuity andreliability at reduced costs.

    The Type PRS electronic sectionalizer comprises twomajor components: A standard cutout mounting andan electronic module. The design and construction othe Type PRS are such as to enhance reliability andcoordination o the distribution system. The electronicsectionalizer module fts into the standard mounting

    o a Chance Type C and S&C Type XS cutout. Thisinterchangeability reduces the cost o retroft installation.

    Operation

    The power required or the logic circuit o the Type PRSelectronic sectionalizer is obtained rom the built-incurrent transormer. When a ault occurs, which exceedsthe minimum actuating current o the sectionalizer, thelogic circuit will power-up. The upstream recloseropens the circuit causing the line current to all below thedead line threshold. The logic circuit recognizes thisas a count and stores this occurrence in its memory ortwo minutes. In doing so, the Type PRS merely counts

    the backup reclose operations.

    Ater a predetermined number o such operations, theType PRS isolates the circuit while the back-up recloseris in the open position. The recloser is then allowed toclose, restoring service to the unaulted sections o thesystem. I the ault is temporary and is cleared beorethe sectionalizer count reaches the predeterminednumber, the sectionalizer remains closed and resets to itsoriginal state ater its reset time expires.

    Drop-open operation is the same or both types o the PRSelectronic sectionalizer: Standard (let) and Loadbreak

    (right, with Arc Chute interrupter). See ollowing pages orspecifcations and ordering inormation.

    System Voltage:The sectionalizer must have a voltage rating equal to or

    greater than the system voltage.Continuous Current:

    The sectionalizer must have a continuous current ratingequal to or greater than the anticipated system loadcurrent plus overload.

    Where hydraulic reclosers are used, the continuouscurrent rating o the sectionalizer is typically equal tothe continuous current rating o the upstream automaticcircuit recloser.

    Minimum Actuating Current:

    The minimum actuating current o sectionalizers shouldbe 80% o the phase minimum trip o the source sidesingle-phase automatic circuit recloser (ACR). Where

    three-phase reclosers or circuit breakers are used, a usermay want to coordinate sectionalize actuating currentwith the ground trip rating.

    Where hydraulic reclosers are used, this is easilyaccomplished by matching the sectionalizer and the

    Where sectionalizers are used in series, the downstreamsectionalizer should have one less count than theupstream sectionalizer (Figure 3).

    Number of Counts:

    The sectionalizer should be set to operate in at leastone less count than the backup recloser. Example: a4-shot recloser would require a maximum o a 3-count

    sectionalizer downstream (Figure 2, line A).In case o a 2-ast/2-slow reclose setting, a 2-countsectionalizer may be used to reduce the number orecloser operations (Figure 2, line B).

    Programming

    Programming o the unit has been simplifed with the

    use o Hubbells programming sotware package. Simplyconnect the USB cable provided into the USB port on

    the bottom o the unit and then into a computer with the

    provided sotware. Provide the inputs or the upstreamdevice and the sotware will provide suggested settings

    which the user can accept or override.

    Event Log

    The programmable sectionalizer contains onboard memory

    storage that will record the last 8 events the unit has

    seen. Users will be able to download the event log via theUSB port and have access to the measured ault current,

    number o counts, and deadline current.
