NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

(Sunday 10 August 2014)

WELCOME TO ST JOHN’S CHURCH, DEE WHY (on the corner of Avon Road and Oaks Avenue) St John’s is a place of soul-stirring worship, challenging preaching, fine art and music, warm fellowship and outreach. It remains as Dee Why’s oldest institution. We are an Anglican parish in the Catholic Tradition of Anglicanism, which: • welcomes everyone • seeks to live the life of Christ in community • reaches out in love to others to share this life If you are a baptised communicant Christian from another Church you are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us today, or you may choose to come forward to receive a blessing. Please join us for refreshments after all services.

FROM THE RECTOR 10 August 2014 Dear Friends, Until after the resurrection, the faith of the disciples fluctuated a great deal: they knew doubt and fear in the presence of him whom they took for a ghost in this Sunday’s gospel. In the person of Peter, with his impulses and hesitations, we find depicted the faith of the typical disciple: our own faith. It will not be able to overcome its fears and its questions except by turning resolutely to Christ in order to obey when he calls. Then with all our fear overcome, we will be able to bow down before him and confess his divinity. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

Children are always welcome in all our church services at St John's. In addition, at the 10:00am service there is Godly Play for children from three to twelve years, and our Crèche (unsupervised) where parents can take little ones if upset or restless while still following the service on the large TV screen.

PARISH NEWS Baptism: We welcome into the family of the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism today, Avery Elisabeth Peterson during the 8:00am Holy Eucharist, and at 2:30pm Gracie Clare Gilchrist and Emily Dawn Murdock. Please pray for Avery, Gracie and Emily, and their parents and godparents, as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith. Enrolment in the Catechumenate: We have two adults to be enrolled as catechumens (those being instructed in preparation for Baptism) this Sunday at the 10:00am Mass. Please pray for Alistair and Susie as they make this important step in their spiritual journey. Amnesty International: Letter writing will be conducted today after each morning service with Neridah Byrne. Letters proposed for sending to the Egyptian Government relate to the conviction, imprisonment and ill-treatment of Australian Peter Greste and colleagues on charges that are not recognisably criminal. While working as journalists for Al Jazeera on reports concerning the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, they were arrested and charged with broadcasting false news and collaboration with the movement. For more information please speak with Neridah today. Mothers’ Union: The next meeting of St John’s MU Branch is on Wednesday 20 August. After the Healing Eucharist and a cuppa we will be sharing our favourite Bible verses. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please see Deacon Sandra or Margaret Winters. Pins’ n ’Needles – Reminder: Next meetings Tuesday 11 and 25 August, usual time and place.

St John’s Trivia Night is on Saturday 23 August starting at 7:00pm. To prepare, why not book your “table for eight”, assemble your brains trust, plan your table’s decorative theme for the night, and stock up on the drinks, chocolates, sweets and other sustenance you will need to keep your attention (coffee and tea will be available). Or, if not organised in advance, just come and join in. To book your place, please call Lynette Johnson (0408 254 125) or the parish office (9971 8694 Mon-Fri, 9:30am-2:00pm). Memorial to David Coburn: Many will remember David Coburn who was organist here between 1991 and 2003. The Parish Council has agreed to dedicate a stop on the new organ to David's memory. The idea of enlarging the Pogson organ was David's dream many years ago. Any who wish to contribute to this memorial should speak with Lynette, or include an envelope marked “David Coburn Memorial” with their offering. Op Shop: St John’s Op Shop raised $2,350 on Saturday 2 August. Many thanks to all who contributed and helped. Happy Birthday: Joan Morgans (11th), Florence Watts (12th), Kyle Flood-Cutugno (14th), Therese Soltau (15th)

Congratulations to Gwen  and  Jay  Zmijewski  on  the  birth  of  Zeke,  their  third  son,  last  week.

Thank you: Leonie Wenning writes: “Thank you - to Fr Steven, Dn Sandra, Dn Jenny and Tom. Our heartfelt thanks for the warmth and comfort of Ted’s service. To Denise and Roger and their team; for the delicious and varied food, enjoyed by all. And to the “friendly bunch” of St John’s community, thanks to you all for your sympathy and support.

Leonie, Cathy, David and their families.”

The things people do: As well as the many parishioners and groups at St John’s whose activities are part of the regular programs here, St John’s is supported by many whose acts of love are known to God alone, whose kind works may never see the light of day in the parish news, and whose quiet dedication will never be celebrated or even acknowledged by others. For example, one of our regulars at the Op Shop routinely scours the stalls for toys, stationery, soft toys and the like and sends them to organisations both in Australia (such as Bear Cottage, Royal Far West, Stewart House and Westmead Children’s Hospital ) and overseas where they are greatly appreciated. Please pray for all who are sharing their faith in so many different ways here, especially those quietly living out a spirit of love and service to others.

Acknowledging all Volunteers: It is being increasingly recognised that volunteer work forms a key but quiet ministry in the parish. Thanks to our volunteers who know that the way they go about their tasks is seen by many visitors who then ask themselves, “Do we want to be members of this family? Are the volunteers we meet here helping us, by the way they live and work, to gain some small glimpse of God’s love? Do they appreciate and encourage each other?” It seems that the answer is increasingly “Yes”, and we hope that we all want to be a part of this story. Ed. Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is to be at Dee Why Surf Club this week on 18-21 August (12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, and 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby for information. To donate, first book a time on 13 14 95, then eat a substantial meal and drink three to four glasses of water in the hours before. Take your donor card or photo ID when you visit.

To the Glory of God Candles burning in the Church for the month of

August are in loving memory of Gladys Jean Watson
