HUBBELL Type C-POLYMER Cutouts
the ground, rom a bucket truckor rom the pole.
The toggle type trunnion is aselective silver-plated bronzecasting or eicient currenttranser to the lower hinge con-tacts. A cam shaped projectionon each side o the trunnioncasting provides high pressureparallel current paths to thelower contacts. These projections,or pivot pins, are cast ull roundor smooth rotational operationin the hinge. The link ejector as-sists in arc interruption duringlow ault current or excessiveoverload conditions. A groove inthe center o the link ejector al-lows the use links pigtail to godirectly rom the use tube to theattachment nut. A curved ejectorminimizes bending stresses in thepigtail to prevent broken strands.
A stainless steel torsion spring onthe link ejector helps to rapidlyeject the link rom the bore o theuseholder during interruption.The 200 amp link ejector has a
wider groove area and increasedspring orce to accommodate thelarger links.
The link ejector is pinned to thetrunnion casting with a stainlesssteel pin to provide resistance to
corrosive elements and provide smooth pivotal action. Aninterlocking eature between the link ejector and tube castingprevents excessive tension on the use link during closure,thereby preventing link breakage.
The link ejector employs a hammer eect to enhance toggleaction o the trunnion during low ault and overload inter-ruptions, hence dropout action is enhanced. The link ejectorprovides sucient surace area to acilitate re-using by
linemen wearing gloves.
Ratings/Specifcations
STANDARD Type C-Polymer cutouts are maximum designvoltage rated to eliminate application and selection conusion.There are no restrictions on application to grounded wye,ungrounded wye, or delta systems having maximum operat-ing voltages (line-to-line) equal to or less than the cutoutmaximum design voltage rating. (See the LINKBREAK andLOADBREAK cutouts or their specications.) Interruptiontests have been perormed at ull system line-to-line voltage.100-amp and 200-amp use tubes and 300-amp disconnectblades are available or each voltage class. They all t into acommon mounting assembly rated at 300 amps continuous.
QualityConstructionEfcient Current Transer
The Type C-Polymer cutout hasan all copper current path. Allcontacts are silver-plated. Ter-minals are tin-plated bronze oruse with copper or aluminumconductors.
Loadbreak Hooks
Galvanized steel hooks arestandard on all Type C cutouts,except the arc chute version, oruse with a portable loadbreaktool. These sturdy hooks aremounted on the top support andserve to guide the useholderinto the latch socket.
Top Contact
The top contact is attached tothe galvanized-steel hood bya stainless rivet to provide asmooth sel-aligning action
during closing even in severelycorrosive environments. Thetop contact provides a socket-type cavity or latching theuseholder and prevents anypossible over-travel o theuseholder. The top contact ismade o a highly conductive copper strip with silver-platedembossments or ecient current transer. The contacts areheld under constant pressure designed to maintain rmcontact with the useholder contact surace until ault inter-ruption is accomplished.
Hinge
The hinge on the Type C-Polymer cutout employs large pivot
areas or the useholders trunnion and is cast o a copper alloychosen or its strength and corrosion resistance. The hingecontacts are highly conductive copper alloy stampings andare plated to assure low resistance current transer rom thetrunnion casting. The parallel current paths are backed up byhigh strength cantilever springs and are riveted to the hingecastings. Fuseholder can be dropped into place and easilylited up and out. No tricky maneuvering is required.
Fuseholders
The solid cap on the single vent useholder is a copper alloy,silver-plated to provide ecient current transer. An integralring is provided in the top tube casting or opening and clos-ing the useholder with an appropriate disconnect tool rom
ApplicationThe primary purpose o any cutout is to provide protec-tion to the lines o your system and the various apparatuson those lines such as transormers and capacitor banks.Hubbell Type C-Polymer cutouts provide reliable protectionrom low-level overloads that just melt the use link, inter-
mediate aults, and very high aults, through maximum
interrupt rating.
In addition, Type C-Polymer cutouts can also be used as asectionalizing device. With the use o a portable loadbreaktool, Type C-Polymer cutouts can unction much like anoverhead disconnect switch. A 300 amp disconnect blade
is also available or this purpose.
Polymer InsulatorsType C-Polymer cutout insulators are manuacturedwith ESP silicone alloy rubber, the same material usedin Ohio Brass PDV arresters and Hi*Lite insulators.ESP is a polymer compound made by alloying siliconeand EPDM rubber. This alloy oers the desirable tough-ness and resistance to tracking o our original EPR,with the hydrophobic characteristics derived rom lowmolecular weight silicone oils.

materials. Upgrades to Cutout Perormance
The increased metal-to-metal leakage distance o TypeC-Polymer Cutouts compares to their porcelain coun-terparts at 12.6" (319 mm) vs 8.7" (220 mm) or 15kVand 17.1" (434 mm) vs 12.6" (319 mm) or 27kV.
Signicantly lighter, Type C-Polymer Cutouts typicallyweigh only approximately hal their porcelain counter-
parts. This ergonomic advantage makes them simpleto install and, o course, ar less ragile than porcelain.That means reduced or eliminated losses rom routineshipping, storage and handling.

InterchangeabilityChance was the rst to design a cutout that could interchangeuseholders and mounting assemblies with those o anothermanuacture. Standard Type C useholders and mounting as-semblies are mutually interchangeable with the S&C ElectricCompanys Type XS cutout (within the same voltage class).
The Type C-Polymer Standard cutout is mutually interchange-able with Chance Type C Porcelain Standard cutout.
Synthetic Arc-Quenching FusetubeThe1/2-inch inside diameter o the Type C-Polymer cutouts 100ampere usetube increases internal pressure giving superiorand reliable expulsion action. During requently encounteredintermediate ault ranges this diameter also permits higherTRV (transient recovery voltage) values to be tolerated. Thissmall bore design eliminates any concern related to highimpedance phase-to-phase aults on ungrounded wye anddelta systems.
The inside liner is a synthetic arc-quenching ormulation inpart consisting o polyester ber, epoxy and Aluminum TriHydrate. The liner is chemically bonded to the tube's glass-reinorced shell. This combination provides a moisture sourceto extinquish the arc during interrupt operations without
absorption o atmospheric moisture leading to potentialswelling and delamination, and provides a high burstingstrength. It is protected rom the weather and environmentby a special ultra-violet resistant coating. For more inor-mation on the synthetic arc-quenching material, reer toBulletin 10-0201.
The Hubbell use tube operates with uselinks rom all majorsuppliers.
100 amp or smaller uselinks shall not be used in 200-ampuseholders.
BracketsType C-Polymer cutouts come packed one per carton includ-ing a NEMA Heavy Duty B bracket with captive 11/2" boltor crossarm mounting.
Type X brackets, also or crossarm mounting, provides 2 5/8"additional clearance between the crossarm and the cutout.
D brackets are used to mount cutouts and/or arrestersdirectly to the pole. Three brackets may be used or three-phase application. Type D brackets provide a clean, quickmounting without crossarm or special pole bands.
All the above brackets are galvanized steel or long lastingservice. Cutouts can be ordered without any brackets.
Higher Interrupt CapacitiesBy using a copper arc shortening rod inside the top o theusetube, higher interrupt ratings are obtainable. An arcshortening rod is attached to the cap o some usetubes andlowers the use link within the usetube. This permits amuch shorter arc, resulting in less arc energy, and higher
interrupting capacities. For 200 A tubes, it allows or ullvoltage ratings.
It is necessary to use use links with removable buttonheadswhen arc shortening rods are employed.
TerminalsTin-plated bronze parallel groove type terminals are standardon Type C cutouts. They can accommodate aluminum orcopper conductor sizes ranging rom No. 6 (13.3 mm2) solidcopper through 4/0 (160.6 mm2) ACSR or 250 (167.5 mm2)kcmil stranded copper. The parallel groove design is perector handling two dierent sizes o conductor as is the casewhen arresters are being used. Eyebolts are also available.See ordering data, page 10AA-11.

Application
The Type C-Polymer 100 amp Linkbreak cutout provides shortcircuit protection to utility lines with the added eature omechanical linkbreak capability in a loadbreaking unction.Linkbreak cutouts provide reliable protection rom overloadsthat just melt the uselink through the maximum interruptcapacity o the useholder and also provide inductive andcapacitive loadbreak capability. For loadbreak ratings seechart, next page.
The unit will also accept the Type C-Polymer 200 amp non-loadbreak useholder or a 300 amp disconnect blade. EachLinkbreak cutout includes standard loadbreak hooks to usewith portable loadbreak tools. This method is particularlyuseul or switching o the 200 amp useholder and 300 ampdisconnect blade.
Design / Product FeaturesConstruction and product details shown on page 10AA-3 ap-ply to the Linkbreak cutout except that the link-ejector onthe linkbreak useholder is a copper-alloy casting instead oa stainless-steel stamping.
The unit utilizes a stainless-steel linkbreak lever to me-chanically break uselink elements thereby obtaining loadinterruption within the useholder. The Type C-PolymerLinkbreak useholder is not designed to be interchangeablewith any other manuacturers cutout.
All standard non-loadbreak useholders and the linkbreakuseholders are interchangeable and t into both the non-
loadbreak and Type C-Polymer or Porcelain Linkbreak cutoutmounting assemblies. Mounting assemblies are the same asthose or Type C-Polymer or Porcelain STANDARD cutouts,shown on page 10AA-5.
Ratings / Specifcations
The 15 kV Type C-Polymer Linkbreak cutout has a maximumdesign voltage rating o 15 kV. There are no voltage restric-tions on application to grounded wye, ungrounded wye, ordelta systems having maximum operating voltages (line toline) equal to or less than the cutout maximum design volt-age rating.
The 15/27kV Type C-Polymer LINKBREAK cutout hasmaximum design slant voltage ratings. These cutouts are tobe used on systems which have phase-to-ground voltages nogreater than the value listed to the let o the slant (/) and
which have phase-to-phase voltages no greater than the valuelisted to the right o the slant.
The Type C-Polymer Linkbreak cutout is to be used withuselinks requiring 1 inch or less elongation beore break-ing. Fuselinks requiring more than 1 inch elongation beorebreaking must not be used with the Type C-Polymer Link-break cutout.

Application
The Type C-Polymer Loadbreak Cutout is available orapplication on 15 and 27 kV distribution systems. The ad-dition o the arc chute expands the fexibility o the Chanceprotective devices amily by providing loadbreak capabilityor cutouts and disconnect solid blade units. The loadbreakcutout provides short circuit protection to utility lines withthe added eature o a loadbreaking unction.
The loadbreak cutout is applicable or transormer andcapacitor bank switching or line sectionalizing. Loadbreakcutouts provide protection rom overloads that just melt theuselink through the maximum interrupt capacity o theuseholder. They also provide loadbreak capability through300 amperes.
Design
All design eatures and most components o the loadbreakunit are identical to those incorporated in the Type C-Poly-mer standard cutout. The loadbreak portion o the TypeC-Polymer Loadbreak cutout is a heavy duty, reliable loadinterrupter that provides a positive visible loadbreak. A com-mon loadbreak mounting assembly will accept the ChanceType C-Polymer 100 amp and 200 amp loadbreak useholdersor a 300 amp loadbreak disconnect blade.
Ratings/Specifcations
The 15kV Type C-Polymer loadbreak cutout has a maximumdesign voltage rating o 15kV. There are no voltage restric-tions on applicaton to grounded wye, ungrounded wye, ordelta systems having maximum operating voltages (line toline) equal to or less than the cutout maximum design volt-age rating.
The 15/27 and 20/34.5 kV Type C loadbreak cutouts havemaximum design slant voltage ratings. These cutouts areto be used on systems which have phase-to-ground voltages

Fuseholders and mounting assemblies rom other manu-acturers' loadbreak cutouts are not interchangeable withChance loadbreak cutouts. Likewise, Chance useholdersand mountings are not interchangeable with other manu-acturers' loadbreak cutouts.
OperationThe sel-contained loadbreak device enables the lineman tointerrupt load current by means o a simple hookstick opera-tion. To break the current, the lineman inserts a hookstickinto the operating ring and rapidly opens the device. Uponopening, a spring-loaded stainless steel blade mechanismsnaps out through a gray arc chute and elongates, cools andextinguishes the conned arc. The loadbreaking operationis independent o the operating speed o the lineman. Theuse remains undamaged. No special or portable tools arerequired to operate the unit. In the open position, the use-holder or blade hangs in an approximate vertical positionor the visible-break.
