    Seal selection by

MediaSeal selection and material recommendati-on by media.

The recommendations in the media ta-bles on pages 7 to 24 are based on thetypical case of a seal for a horizontalcentrifugal pump. Other types of machine, installation conditions, modes of opera-tion, designers, manufacturers and ope-rators specifications, local regulationsand so on can result in a different choiceof mechanical seal. For complex sealing duties it is always advisable for the user to consult with ourspecialist engineer.

Explanations to columns 1 to 16:

    Column 1:Media designation

Designations of materials to be sealedcomply as far as possible with IUPAC rules (IUPAC = International Union ofPure and Applied Chemistry). Where amaterial has several commonly used de-signations and common names, it is listedin accordance with IUPAC rules withcross-referencing of its other names.Designations are listed in alphabetical order.

    Column 2:Notes on the media

G = mixture/group (compound)The media is a mixture of various isomersof one substance or it is a group of subs-tances having close chemical ties.

N = natural productThe medium is a natural product or the refined form of a natural product withchanging proportions of its various consti-tuents. = trade markThe constituents of the media or their proportions in the medium are unknownor are not known exactly.

S = collective termThe generalized mechanical seal recom-mendation is no more than a pointer to asuitable mechanical seal.

TA = TA-Luft relevant medium. The requirements of the TA-Luft air quali-ty control directive have to be considered.

V = impuritiesThe medium contains large quantities ofimpurities due to the peculiarities of theprocess.

    Column 3:Concentration

= The media normally occurs in pureform and (as in the case of gases andother media requiring a double mechani-cal seal) the concentration has no bear-ing on the mechanical seal selection.

    Column 8:Mechanical seal type

In the case of double or tandem mechani-cal seals, the recommendation applies tothe mechanical seal inboard. The choiceof the outboard seal is dictated by the buffer/-quench medium.

    1 = Mechanical seal having O-ring se-condary seals; unbalanced or balanced;rotating spring in contact with the pro-duct, e. g. M3N, M7N, H7N

2 = Mechanical seal having O-ring secondary seals; unbalanced or balan-ced; rotating springs not in contact with the product, e. g. HJ ...

3 = Mechanical seal having O-ring secondary seals; unbalanced or balan-ced; stationary springs not in contact with the product, e. g. HR ...

    4 = Same as 3 but no metal parts in the product; e. g. HR31/dH G9

5 = Mechanical seal with elastomer bellows; bellows as, MG...

6 = Mechanical seal with metal bel-lows; such as, MFL

    X = Special design e.g. a modified MR-D

    Column 9:Materials of construction

for inboard mechanical seals. For an explanation of the material codesand their indices, consult the material key(inside the back cover of this manual).

Column 10:Hazard warnings and reasonsfor recommending a doublemechanical seal or quench.

When compiling these seal selections and material recommendations, it was generally assumed that the machine inquestion is located in a sheltered buildingfrequented occasionally or continually bypersons coming into contact with liquid orvapour leakage of medium from all typesof sealing points. As such, considerationsof health and environmental protectionhad a strong bearing on the choice of seal category.Health hazard and Ignition/Explosioncan lose much of their significance if themachine is installed in the open or inareas rarely frequented by people and

ringed with warning signs. If no mentionis made to either of the reasons 1 to 5 forrecommending a double mechanical sealor a single mechanical seal with quench,it is acceptable to use a single mechani-cal seal.

The decision in favour of a single me-chanical seal must be taken by the user of the machine or the contractor. As he isthe only one to know all conditions and regulations relating to the process and toassess the risks.

Letters in column 10:Health hazard warnings

T = Toxic. Media which in low quantitiescause death or acute or chro-

nic damage to health when inhaled, swal-lowed or absorbed via the skin.

T+ = Very toxic. Media which in very low quantities causedeath or acute or chronic damage tohealth when inhaled, swallowed or absor-bed via the skin.

Xn = Harmful. Media which may cause deathor acute or chronic damage to

health when inhaled, swallowed or absor-bed via the skin.

Xi = Irritant. Non-corrosive media which, through immediate, prolonged

or repeated contact with the skin or mu-cous membrane, may cause inflammati-on.

C = Corrosive. Media which may, on contact with livingtissues, destroy them.

Carcinogenic: Substances and preparati-ons which, if they are inhaled or ingestedor if they penetrate the skin, may inducecancer or increase its incidence.Mutagenic: Substances and preparationswhich, if they are inhaled or ingested or ifthey penetrate the skin, may induce heri-table genetic defects or increase their in-cidence.Labelling of media with carcinogenic ormutagenic effect:R 40: Limited evidence of a carcinogeniceffectR 45: May cause cancer R 46: May cause heritable genetic da-mageR 49: May cause cancer by inhalation

Toxic for reproduction: Substances andpreparations which, if they are inhaled oringested or if they penetrate the skin, mayproduce, or increase the incidence of,non-heritable adverse effects in the pro-geny and/or an impairment of male or fe-male reproductive functions or capacity.Labelling of media with a toxic effect forreproduction:R 60: May impair fertilityR 62: Possible risk of impaired fertilityR 63: Possible risk of harm to the unbornchild

    Technical grounds and environ-mental protection

1 = Vapour pressure/gasAt normal working temperatures, the medium has a vapour pressure of >1 bar. If the working temperature lies be-low boiling point (column 15) or if thesealing pressure lies clearly above the vapour pressure, a single mechanical seal may be used with consideration ofthe duty details.

2 = CorrosionThe medium attacks all standard metals.Mechanical seals with no metal parts onproduct side must therefore be used.

3 = Exclusion of airIf the medium contacts or mixes with theatmosphere, it forms an explosive or reacts with a damaging effect on the environment, the medium itself and themachine and mechanical seal.

4 = Lubricating propertiesUnder normal conditions, the medium hassuch poor lubricity that a single mechani-cal seal is at risk from dry running.

5 = IcingNormally the medium is conveyed at temperature below 0 C. Without auxi-liary equipment, the proper functioning of a single mechanical seal is at risk from freezing atmospheric moisture.

6 = LeakageAbsorbed and/or flushed away by thequench, or prevented by a double mechanical seal necessary.

F = Highly flammable. Media which may become hotand finally catch fire in contact

with air at ambient temperature withoutany application of energy, or solid mediawhich may readily catch fire after briefcontact with a source of ignition andwhich continue to burn or to be consumedafter removal of the source of ignition, orliquid media having a very low flash-point,or media which, in contact with water ordamp air, evolve extremely flammable ga-ses in dangerous quantities.

F+ = Extremely flammable. Liquid media having an extremely lowflash-point and a low boiling-point and ga-seous media which are flammable incontact with air at ambient temperatureand pressure

O = Oxidizing. Media which give rise to a hig-hly exothermic reaction in

contact with other substances, particular-ly flammable substances.

E = Explosive. Solid, liquid, pasty or gelati-nous media which may also

react exothermically without atmosphericoxygen thereby quickly evolving gases, and which, under defined test conditions, detonate, quickly deflagrate or upon hea-ting explode when partially confined.

N = Dangerous for the environment.

Media which, when they enterthe environment, would or could presentan immediate or delayed danger for oneor more components of the environment.

(The hazard symbols are according to theEU directive 67/548/EEC, Classification, packaging and labelling of dangeroussubstances of June 1967, status April2004)

U = Insufficient informationThe medium designation is imprecise orthe available information on the mediumis insufficient to assess the serviceabilityof a single mechanical seal. Please notifyus of your experiences.

  • Column 11:TLV

The values quoted in ml/m3 = ppm (parts per million) are taken from Bulle-tin 30 published by the Senate Commis-sion for Testing Hazardous Materials:Threshold Limit Values and BiologicalMaterial Tolerances.

    Additional symbols:

mg: TLVs are quoted in mg/m3 instead of ppm

    #, e. g. # 0.5 for barium ...: 0.5 mg/m3,calculated as Ba

    * According to the current level of knowledge, the action of this substanceconstitutes a distinct carcinogenic ha-zard for humans. No concentration va-lues are given for this substance in the list because it is still impossible to quo-te any concentration as being safe. With some of these substances, there is even a great risk from absorptionthrough healthy skin. If the use of suchsubstances is unavoidable for technicalreasons, special safety and monitoringmeasures must be taken.

The seal selection takes account ofthe TLV as follows: TLV

Single sealUnbalancedIndependentof direction of rotationElastomer bellowsMechanical seals of the MG series areamongst the most commonly used. Thebellows is not subjected to any torsionalstress and its ingenious design incorpo-rates several functions, as seal face carri-er, secondary sealing element and drivecollar. The seal face is driven through thespring and L-rings. There are no bondedjoints and all the face materials are inter-changeable without having to modify anydimensions. Highly recommended for du-ties with media containing solids eg. inwaste water and sewage applications.
