MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR
To the Graduands of 2016:
Congratulations!
I am proud to join you on this extraordinary occasion and wish you well as you move forward as leaders in our global community.
Convocation marks a day when the whole University turns its focus to its reason for being. This is a university where the next generation of leaders is born and where students from all walks of life can achieve their dreams.
Every one of you has much to be proud of today and I encourage you to take great satisfaction in seeing the results of your hard work. You are the stars of the show; relish your accomplishments!
Today we look to the future with great anticipation and optimism. The University of Winnipeg graduates have much to offer Canada and the world beyond our borders. Be persistent, pursue your goals, and know that you will have our continued support along the way.
ROBERT SILVER, BSc (Hons)
CHANCELLOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG
4
It is my honour, on behalf of The University of Winnipeg community, to offer sincere congratulations to each of you on your achievements. Today we gather to celebrate your success and to pause and reflect on where you will go next — whether you are launching a career, pursuing further studies, or taking off to explore the world – you have reached an important milestone on your journey.
This is also a time for us to recognize and value the support and encouragement you have received from professors, family, friends, and fellow students who have helped you realize your dreams. It was Rudyard Kipling who said “He travels the fastest who travels alone.” A wise person adds “We who travel farthest, travel with others.”
UWinnipeg is located on Treaty One land in the heart of the Metis nation, and we are a richly diverse community. It is our underlying strength. We are deeply committed to reaching out to all students, including those who have traditionally faced barriers to participating in post-secondary education. I hope you have been enriched by the exposure to the many ideas and cultures and life experiences that flourish here.
You are now members of the extended UWinnipeg family, joining more than 50,000 people who have passed through these doors as students. I am one of those graduates, and I attribute my academic and career successes to the solid foundation I received at UWinnipeg and the dedicated professors who inspired me to continue to strive and learn.
It is our sincere hope that your time at UWinnipeg has allowed you to realize your unique talents as you move forward to create a difference in your community.
On behalf of our faculty and staff, congratulations once again and please accept my best wishes for your adventures ahead.
DR. ANNETTE TRIMBEE, BSc, MSc, PhD
PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
5
Dear Graduates,
I am delighted to bring greetings on behalf of The University of Winnipeg Alumni Council and the more than 50,000 alumni we represent. Today, you officially join this illustrious group after years of hard work, dedication, coffee, sleepless nights, multitasking, sore eyes from staring at computer screens, sore fingers from typing your many papers and theses, fast food wrappers, hair loss, and missed parties. You are now among a group of graduates that includes world-renowned scientists, paradigm-shifting politicians, community-building activists, captivating entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, changers, leaders, doers, and makers.
It has been my absolute pleasure to have been connected to this institution for nearly 20 consecutive years — as a student, a volunteer, a staff member, then as Alumni Council member and president, and finally as an instructor. Needless to say, The University of Winnipeg has been enormously influential on my life and contributed greatly to the person I have become. If you are as lucky as I have been, your time here will have had as much of an impact on you.
The Alumni Association and the Alumni Affairs office strive to keep the relationship between you and UWinnipeg alive and strong through coordinating engaging events, providing volunteer opportunities, and via ongoing communication about campus activities, news, and updates on the various successes of your peers. We strongly encourage you to show your pride in the institution by purchasing a UWinnipeg license plate if you have a car, buying a branded frame for your degree or diploma outside at the alumni booth, and keep connecting by following us on social media. You will also receive an alumni pin, which we hope you will wear with pride.
When I was much younger, I learned something that has shaped my outlook on life and I will share it with you in the words of Leonardo da Vinci: “It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” All of you have the potential to happen to things. All of you have the potential to change the world for the better. Never forget that while few if any great things happen from the labour of one alone, every great invention, social movement, inspirational song, or great play on the soccer pitch started with one person. You can be that one person.
Thank you all for your time and effort, thank you for your dedication to making yourself a more rounded and educated person, and thank you for choosing The University of Winnipeg. Congratulations to you all and I look forward to following the impact of the class of 2016.

Robert Enright is an educator, public intellectual, cultural journalist, and passionate champion of the arts in Canada. As CBC radio and television’s Manitoba-based art and culture critic for 25 years, he was the familiar voice who — via a skilled and in-depth knowledge of art, theatre, literature and dance —brought attention to many emerging and established artists.
Enright was the founder and is now the senior contributing editor to the award-winning magazine, Border Crossings. For his writing in its pages he has received 14 nominations at the National and Western Magazine Awards, winning four gold and two silver medals. He has been a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail and to a number of international art magazines, including frieze, ArtReview, Modern Painters, and ARTnews. He is also a juror for the prestigious Scotiabank Photography Award.
Enright collaborated with Arthur Danto and Steve Martin on the book Eric Fischl: 1970 - 2000, and published a collection of 32 interviews under the title Peregrinations: Conversations with Contemporary Artists. He also has contributed essays, introductions, and interviews to 100 books and exhibition catalogues in Canada, the U.S., and Europe.
In 2012, Enright and Meeka Walsh were invited to guest curate the notable exhibit Winnipeg Now in celebration of the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s 100th anniversary. He has given generously of his time to cultural organizations and events across the country and especially to the rich Winnipeg arts and cultural community, acting as host at numerous fundraising and gala events.
Enright currently serves as a Professor and holds the University Research Chair in Art Theory and Criticism in the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph. In 2005, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada, and in 2006, he received the Art Award of Distinction from the National Council of Arts Administrator in the U.S. and a Gold Medal for his contribution to the arts by the Royal Canadian Academy. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
For his lifetime of achievements in the arts, The University of Winnipeg bestows upon Robert Enright an Honorary Doctor of Letters.

George Bain is a Winnipeg native who became a renowned scholar, an industrial peacemaker, and an exceptional academic leader.
A graduate in Economics and Political Science and Lecturer of the University of Manitoba, he was active in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, becoming a Lieutenant, and in politics, becoming President of the Manitoba New Democratic Party shortly after its founding in 1961. In 1963, a Commonwealth Scholarship took him to Oxford for doctoral studies in Industrial Relations.
Bain’s distinguished academic career led him from Oxford to a professorship at the age of 30 at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology; the University of Warwick, where he was Chairman of the Warwick Business School; the London Business School, where he was Principal; and Queen’s University Belfast, where he was President and Vice Chancellor.
His interests and activities have extended far beyond the academy, particularly to the making of public policy. Known for his intelligent and balanced approach, Bain has been called upon by the British Government
to chair several commissions and inquiries. To take only one example, he was chair of the Low Pay Commission, which designed and implemented for the first time in the UK a National Minimum Wage, an accomplishment for which he was knighted by the Queen in 2001.
He has served on the Boards of several companies, including Canada Life, Great-West Life, and Bombardier Aerospace; he received the Canadian High Commissioner’s Award for outstanding contribution to the special relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom; he holds eleven honorary doctorates; and his hobbies include playing the piano badly, ice skating, and Western horse riding.
The University of Winnipeg is proud to award George Bain an Honorary Doctor of Laws for impactful contributions to his field of study and his tireless work in creating policies that help build better societies. Bain’s wisdom will continue to inspire and serve policymaking for years to come.

An accomplished leader in business, politics, and philanthropic fundraising, Susan Thompson is a tireless contributor to her community. She serves as an inspiration for women working to blaze new trails and as a valuable mentor to those who aspire to follow in her footsteps.
A graduate of both The University of Winnipeg Collegiate (’67) and UWinnipeg (’71), Thompson began her successful retail career as an international buyer at Eaton’s and The Bay before she became the first woman to own her family’s business: Birt Saddlery. After purchasing it in 1980 from her father, she served as owner and president for 15 years.
In 1992, Thompson was the first and only woman ever elected to serve as Mayor of Winnipeg. During her two terms, she led the city through the 1997 Flood of the Century — one of the biggest crises to hit Winnipeg in 100 years. She also led successful bids for the 1995 Winter Cities International Conference, the 1998 Canadian Briar Curling Championship, the 1998 World Junior Hockey Championship, the 1998 Grey Cup, the 1999 Pan American games, and the 2001 World Indigenous Games.
In 1999, as Canadian Consul General in Minneapolis, Thompson served an eight-state territory consisting of 15 million
people and $32 billion in Canada-US trade. She later served as a Special Advisor of Canada-U.S. Relations for the Department of Foreign Affairs.
In 2003, Thompson returned to her alma mater to become the founding President & CEO of The University of Winnipeg Foundation. With her pronounced gift for donor stewardship and approach to tackling large fundraising goals one donation at a time, she led the Foundation as its endowment grew from $21 to $38 million, and as more than $135 million was raised in the A World of Opportunity Capital Campaign.
Thompson is a proud lifetime Sponsor of HMCS Winnipeg, the recipient of the 2012 University of Winnipeg Distinguished Alumni Award, and currently serves as Executive Consultant for the Winnipeg Art Gallery — where she is helping to raise $65 million for the new Inuit Art Centre.
Thompson’s many successes are built on hard work, integrity, and a commitment to her community, whether it be this University or her city, province, and country. She exemplifies the values of this institution, and The University of Winnipeg is honoured to bestow her with an Honorary Doctor of Laws.

Anne Rusnak retired in 2014 from the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in the Faculty of Arts at UWinnipeg, with a legacy as a beloved and respected teacher, scholar, and contributor to the institution’s academic life and governance.
After completing her BA Honours at UWinnipeg and MA at the University of Manitoba, Rusnak received a prestigious Government of France Graduate Award to continue her graduate studies at the Université de Bordeaux 3, obtaining her DEA, or Diploma of Advanced Studies, in 1987. This led to a life-long interest in literature for children and adolescents, especially Canadian francophone literature.
In 1996, Rusnak and Dr. Mavis Reimer were awarded a UWinnipeg Major Research Grant for a comparative analysis of the key concept of “home” in award-winning French and English literature for children in Canada. The results of that study were published in Canadian Children’s Literature/Littérature canadienne pour la jeunesse (CCL/LCJ), the only Canadian journal in the field. This collaborative project formed the nucleus of the successful 2002 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council proposal on discourses of home in Canadian children’s literature, which involved 13 scholars and resulted in a well-reviewed collection of essays published by Wilfrid
Laurier University Press in 2008. In 2005, the editors of CCL/LCJ moved the journal from the University of Guelph to UWinnipeg’s campus (now published as Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures). Rusnak’s work as Associate Editor with special responsibility for French content, between 2005 and 2008, was important to the growing reputation of the journal — nationally and internationally.
Rusnak was an energetic teacher who put students first and created an engaging classroom experience. Her office bulletin boards were filled with postcards from former students who kept in touch. Early in her career, she earned UWinnipeg’s Clifford J. Robson Award for Excellence in Teaching and was listed as a Popular Prof in the Maclean’s Guide to Canadian Universities. In 2013, Rusnak was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her outstanding contributions as a teacher and a volunteer.
In a career that spanned approximately three and half decades, she served on numerous committees at the departmental, faculty and university levels. Well-respected by her peers, she was also instrumental in developing the Flexible Major Program, where she worked with colleagues from across the disciplines to create Student-Designed Majors, Combined Majors, and Thematic Majors.
The University of Winnipeg honours Anne Rusnak as Instructor Emerita.

Previously named Dean Emeritus, Dr. Michael Collins McIntyre served as Dean of Arts and Science from 1982-1992 and Assistant Dean from 1978-1982, when the faculty was essentially the soul of the institution. He impressed his colleagues with his ability to balance his many responsibilities — including oversight of the University’s academic programs and its faculty, teaching, and his own research program — and maintain an active role as a leader. In addition to performing duties that are now shared among several positions, McIntyre established UWinnipeg’s Centre for Academic Writing and an accessibility program for those with physical disabilities.
McIntyre also boosted the arts presence on campus by fostering the evolution of Theatre from a program to a department, and by establishing In-Residence programs for writers, directors and playwrights. Working collegially with the departments, he was able to foster research capacity in the sciences.
McIntrye received the Clifford J. Robson Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2005. In 2014, the year he retired, he earned the Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance.
McIntyre joined UWinnipeg’s psychology department in 1975 after attaining his PhD in neuropsychology at the U of Minnesota and completing his post-doctoral fellowship at Cornell University,
New York. After his final term as Dean, he returned to the Department of Psychology.
McIntyre is currently Research Program leader with the Compassion Project at the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre. His research legacy includes more than 40 refereed journal articles and 55 conference presentations and informal publications. He has also served as an Affiliated Scientist and Program Leader of the Functional Neuroimaging Program at the National Research Council of Canada, and has supervised doctoral and post-doctoral students. His research has been supported by the Bronfman Foundation, the Manitoba Health Sciences Foundation, the Health Sciences Centre Research Foundation, and the National Research Council of Canada.
McIntyre has generously created two Scholarships in the names of his late friends and peers: the Dr. Donald Kydon Prize and the Don Kerr Scholarship. He also honoured his late mother by creating The Eleanor Collins Wenners Collection fund, in support of library acquisitions in art history . In a true testament to his character, his colleagues created the Michael Collins McIntyre Rhetoric, Writing and Communications Scholarship, awarded to a student in that program.
The University of Winnipeg honours Dr. Michael Collins McIntyre with Fellowship in United College.

An inspirational teacher and role model, Jane Lothian Murray has earned the highest praise, respect, and admiration from her students. Part of her successful teaching philosophy is to make her classrooms a sanctuary for her students, a place where they can take risks, share ideas, and challenge misconceptions — absent of judgment or criticism.
Lothian Murray has extensive knowledge of criminal justice and related research. Her ongoing authorship of the most popular introductory sociology textbook in Canada, Sociology in our Times (7th ed.), gives her extensive understanding of current research, which she applies in the classroom.
Lothian Murray’s key strength is the exceptional learning environment she fosters. Her interactive classes encourage participation as she utilizes a wide range of resources such as provocative case studies and exercises that move students from abstract concepts to personal engagement. She works tirelessly to bridge theory and practice, and help students arrive at solutions for the dilemmas of justice. Her students consistently rave about her teaching style, along with her ability to generate discussions and stimulate critical thinking.
Lothian Murray demonstrates great compassion when dealing with difficult subject matter. Her course material is challenging but her dedication to criminal justice and to her students inspires them to go beyond themselves.
Before she was an academic, Lothian Murray spent 10 years working in Youth Corrections, Child Welfare and Mental Health. Her research interests include family violence and youth justice. Murray’s students benefit greatly from her integrated academic and first-hand field experiences. One of her former students stated: “Her enthusiasm for the students and academic education truly brings life to the University of Winnipeg’s ‘Discover • Achieve • Belong’ message.”
The University of Winnipeg is honoured to present Jane Lothian Murray with the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence, for inspiring so many students to pursue careers in criminal justice as well as teaching countless others to hold a more compassionate view as it relates to this field of study.

Dr. Blair Jamieson is a leader in the field of subatomic physics. He has made significant and influential contributions to the neutrino research community worldwide with his broad background in detector and hardware development and analysis. The goal of his research: physics beyond the Standard Model — a theory that explains what the world is and what holds it together. His approach to creating detectors and analysis is among the most statistically sophisticated in his field and his methods have been adopted by other neutrino experiments worldwide.
Before coming to UWinnipeg in 2011, Jamieson did his post-doctorate research with Dr. Arthur B. McDonald (now Nobel Laureate), on the third phase of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) experiment, which contributed to McDonald’s Nobel Prize in physics.
Jamieson has since made substantial research contributions to two other high-profile international collaborations: the neutron Electric Dipole moment (nEDM) experiment planned at the Ultra Cold Neutron (UCN) facility at TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, and the Tokai to Kamioka (T2K)
neutrino experiment. Jamieson and his students at UWinnipeg are also responsible for developing new simulation software and detector hardware for both experiments.
Jamieson is also the principal investigator on two Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council subatomic project grants and one for the Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund. He is also a member of the Prairie Isotope Production Enterprise, a not-for-profit corporation based in Manitoba that aims to develop a reliable supply of the medical-tracing radioisotope Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) for Canadian patients.
Jamieson continues to publish several peer-reviewed articles a year. His work is highly cited and he has set the bar for future neutrino physics analysis, describing in detail the painstaking efforts to ensure the validity of the measurements.
The University of Winnipeg is honoured to present Dr. Blair Jamieson with the Erica and Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship for his vast research contributions that seek to enable a greater understanding of our universe.

If students are the lifeblood of The University of Winnipeg, then Judy Tanner can be found at its heart. As Coordinator of Student Records, Tanner is responsible for overseeing critical data and systems, which include the processes responsible for registering students, maintaining accountable records, and administering grades. She is also the designated academic advisor for all Wesmen athletes, and assists the coaches when they are meeting with recruits from around the world.
Effective flow of information requires precise coordination among departments—a challenge Tanner meets with professionalism and a calm, reassuring demeanor. Over her three decades in the Student Records office, she has become a go-to resource for her colleagues on all things at The University of Winnipeg. Tanner played an important role in initiatives like the opening of Student Central and was part of the team that transitioned student registration from manual to online
through WebAdvisor. Most recently, she was a key contributor to the University’s new Student Planning tool—a project that reflected her commitment to improving the student experience.
Tanner consistently recognizes the human being behind each number, and goes out of her way to assist students—whether it’s advising on course selection or cheering them on as a fervent Wesmen supporter. One student credits the advice Tanner provided during registration for allowing him to focus on success in academics and sports. Following a national championship win, that student wasn’t surprised to run into a congratulatory Tanner in the hall—while on his way to a class she had helped him select.
Tanner is a classic unsung hero: her behind-the-scenes impact is vital, but difficult to see when the University is operating efficiently. As such, The University of Winnipeg recognizes her as a Star of Spence Street.

Dr. Joan Grace is being honoured for her many contributions as a gifted and effective administrator in a variety of supportive and leadership roles, most notably as the Chair of the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program offered jointly by UWinnipeg and the University of Manitoba.
An associate professor, Joan joined the Department of Political Science 15 years ago after holding lecturing positions at McMaster and Ryerson Universities. She earned her BA (Honours) in political science from the University of Victoria in 1993, her MPA from UWinnipeg/U of Manitoba in 1995, and her PhD in political science from McMaster University in 2003. In addition to her reputation for administrative acumen, she is known as an assiduous teacher and scholar.
Joan has committed her time to self-governance of the University at every level. In her department, she has served on several committees, including as Chair of the Curriculum Committee, the Graduate Studies Committee, the Management Committee, and the Department Review Committee. At the faculty level, she has either served on or chaired the Faculty Tenure and Promotion Committee, the General Faculty Council Executive, and the
Study Leave Committee. At the University level, her commitments have included chairing the Joint Senate Committee and serving on many others, including a task force on Graduate Studies, and the Senate. She currently serves on the Graduate Studies Committee.
Joan’s commendable administrative strengths are most notable in her role as Chair of the joint MPA program, which she initially held from 2004 to 2008, and returned to at a critical time, in 2014. The previous Chair left while the program was in transition with regard to structure and curriculum, and her colleagues at both campuses praise Joan for having the skills required to update a joint program as well as the great diplomacy she demonstrates consistently with all stakeholders — including students, faculty members, and administrators. She is noted for her efforts to not just strengthen the program, but the relationships behind it. Additionally, as Chair, Joan is a valued mentor to students as they build their public sector careers.
For her dedication, commitment, and service, The University of Winnipeg is proud to present Dr. Joan Grace with the Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance.

As a dedicated chemistry student and teaching assistant, Michael Wiebe consistently went above and beyond his duties. Under the mentorship of Professor Devin Latimer, Wiebe developed a novel experiment for The University of Winnipeg’s new microwave reactor, which allows for student-led discovery of the 12 principles of Green Chemistry. An emerging area, Green Chemistry focuses on designing products and processes that minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances. Wiebe’s work sees the principles of Green Chemistry applied in such a way that they enlighten all the scientific practices that students undertake.
Wiebe dedicated many post-employment hours to developing this lab experiment into an article, which was published in the journal Green Chemistry Letters and Reviews. Professor Latimer subsequently presented this project at two international conferences: The 5th Asia-Oceania Conference on Green and Sustainable Chemistry (New Delhi, India, January 2015) and The International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies 2015 (Pacifichem, Honolulu, USA, 2015). The work was recognized at Pacifichem as “an
exceptional addition to sustainable chemistry education” and was the lone senior organic oral presentation included in the two-day session Green and Sustainable Chemistry Education for Tomorrow’s Citizens of the World. Wiebe continues to assist Professor Latimer as needed on the Green Chemistry lab he helped develop.
Students at UWinnipeg will benefit from Wiebe’s efforts for a long time to come. The experiment has become pivotal to the undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum. It promotes the discovery and, most importantly, the institutionalization of the 12 principles of Green Chemistry. More than 200 science students per year at UWinnipeg — and likely many more in the global science community — will advance with the impetus to apply important sustainability principles to their future studies and careers.
For his dedicated academic work, The University of Winnipeg is proud to award Michael Wiebe the Campus Sustainability Recognition Award.

As Adam Bergman graduates with his 4-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree, he is already taking what he learned in class and applying it in the real world — with “real people and real money,” as he says. A double major in marketing and human resources to his credit, Bergman is employed at his friend’s construction company, a small business that allows him to have a hand in everything.
Bergman says that small class sizes and one-one-one relationships with professors in UWinnipeg’s Faculty of Business and Economics were highlights of his educational experience. “There is an open door feeling, where you can drop in and have a coffee.” He also values the interdisciplinary approach to business that allowed him to take courses outside his majors, such as computer science and nutrition.
Bergman is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, which supports and rewards top academic achievers. He has received numerous academic awards, including: Chancellor
R.O.A. Hunter Scholarship in Business & Administration, Dean’s Honour List-Student of Highest Distinction, Academic Proficiency Scholarship, Grace O’Farrell Scholarship, Academic Proficiency Scholarship, R. Fletcher Argue Scholarships, The Robert Lothian Human Resources Award, and the Buhler Business and Administration Major Scholarship.
Outside of class, Bergman is a drummer in a band and dedicated humanitarian. He has worked abroad in Africa and the Philippines, serving communities in need. Bergman is considering pursuing a Master’s degree in the next several years, with a career goal that blends business and humanitarian work in the non-profit sector.
His advice to fellow graduates is to continue building people networks, while staying connected with professors and staff in the business faculty.

In 2015, Pomanski received the Dr. Henry Woltman Scholarship in Kinesiology and Applied Health, awarded by the Gupta Faculty to the “most promising student entering the final year of the Kinesiology and Applied Health major.” The previous year, she received the Chuck Badcock Scholarship in Athletic
Therapy, which is provided to a deserving UWinnipeg athletic therapy student entering third year of studies.
Pomanski is currently working in her home town of Selkirk, Manitoba, as a strength and conditioning specialist at a physiotherapy clinic. She also plans to pursue a master’s program in physiotherapy, a next step she began to consider while completing clinical work for her UWinnipeg studies. She says a big highlight of her time in the program was practicum placements with sports teams, including the Selkirk Royals high school rugby team, the Interlake Thunder midget football team, and most recently, the Selkirk Steelers Jr. A Hockey Club.
In addition to what she learned at UWinnipeg, Pomanski says she values the close, supportive relationships she formed with her peers and faculty members.

ACADEMIC DRESS
Academic dress originated in medieval times to provide warmth in the damp halls of learning. In its present form it includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders) and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive dress for each degree offered, which explains the variety seen in the academic procession.
The University of Winnipeg academic dress conforms to the North American Intercollegiate Code. All graduates wear a black gown which varies according to the degree conferred. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed in front and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed to be worn either open or closed in front and has closed sleeves with an opening to free the hands. The front portion of the sleeve below the opening has a long semi-circular cut-out. Doctorate gowns also may be worn open or closed. They are faced with velvet.
The edging colour on the hood indicates the faculty in which a degree is conferred: Graduate Studies – red; Science – gold; Education – blue; Arts – white; Business & Economics – brown; Kinesiology - green. The width of edging is determined by the degree: three inches for doctors; two inches for masters and bachelors. Hoods are lined in red with a white chevron.
Honorary doctors’ gowns are red in colour and are faced with white velvet. They are worn with red Tudor bonnets. The hood colour signifies the honorary degree: white for Laws; golden yellow for Science; admiralty blue for Letters; purple for Divinity. Hoods are lined in red and white – The University of Winnipeg colours. Fellows wear a gown of blue with neither hat nor hood. Members of The University’s senior administration wear gowns of varying colours. They do not wear hoods.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG COAT OF ARMS
The Coat of Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governing bodies of The University during the academic session of 1972-73. The elements found within the Coat of Arms have been associated over the years with both Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The bunch of grapes in the lower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat of Arms of Manitoba College. The grape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of 1871. The cross, the lamp and the open book derive from the Coat of Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897 by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross – the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity – was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield – the
symbol of protection. The lamp – the symbol of light – also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devoted for over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book – representing instruction in the way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student – symbolizes knowledge in a general sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limited interpretation.
The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, here retained: Lux et Veritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of the lamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as the grape) in our country (the cross).
The banner, prominently displaying the Coat of Arms, was unveiled in 1988. The volunteer effort of Pat Corner, Fran Farquhar, Susan Ferguson and Sonya C. Wright took more than 1,000 hours. Over
400 meters of thread and 30 meters of wool material went into the project, using traditional techniques such as quilting, embroidery and crewel.
