Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. TOGETHER IN MISSION 2011

It is not to late! If you have not given to Together in Mission this year please consider doing so. St. Paul’s is still $14,000 short of the pledge goal.

A generous donor has challenged the parishioners of our parish with a gift of $10,000 for the Church Gen-eral fund. In order for us to collect this gift, we must increase the number of participants who contribute to TIM by 10% and reach our pledge goal of $128,327. The deadline for the challenge is August 1st. The good news is that we have increased our participants! We area still $14,394 short of our pledges.

Prayer For Our Military Almighty Father, Creator of Humankind, and author of peace

BLESS and safeguard the members of our armed forces and all who find themselves in harm’s way. Be their protector and bring them safely home.

BLESS our military and civilian personnel who have been injured in service to our country. May they experience your firm support, gentle love, and compassionate healing.

BLESS all who have died in defense of our freedoms. Grant them eternal rest in you. BLESS their family members who have been left behind. Be their constant companion and strength. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. AMEN

DID YOU KNOW

Bullying Is a Form of Abuse Did you know that bullying is a form of abuse, and there-fore is forbidden in our Catholic schools? Bullying typi-cally consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause victims to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion. Cyber-bullying, which involves the use of the Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not tolerated in our Catholic schools. If you suspect bullying of a child at school, please contact the school principal with your con-cerns. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Holy Hour Thursday from 6:00-7:00pm (immediately following the 5:30 mass)

Join us for this “Hour of Power”, as we pray the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and personal meditation with Our Lord. Sitting before the Blessed Sacrament is like sitting in the sun. You absorb Grace in the same way you absorb the sun’s rays. You don’t see the changes taking place, but when you go home after a day at the beach, the color of your skin has changed. It’s the same way with the Blessed Sacrament. After sitting in His Presence for a while, the complexion of your soul will change. Come, and be trans-formed.

SENIORS MINISTRY Book Club. . . The next meeting will be on Friday, September 9, 2011 in the Multipurpose Room from 10 to 11:30 AM. Join us for stimulating and thoughtful discussion of current bestsellers and classics. For this meeting, the members have chosen to read Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff. Cleopatra, the wealthiest ruler of her time and one of the most powerful women in history, was a shrewd political strategist, a brilliant manager, an ingenious negotiator and the most manipulative of lovers. Al-though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it re-shaped the contours of the ancient world. At only 18 year old, she was already one of history’s most remark-able figures: the Queen of Egypt. While her palace shimmered with onyx and gold, it was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. A lethal political strug-gle with her brother marked her early adulthood and set the tone of the rest of her life; a relationship with Julius Caesar, forged while under siege in her palace, launched her into a deadly mix of romance and strat-egy; a pleasure cruise down the Nile followed, a child, and a trip to Rome, which ended in Cleopatra’s flight. After Caesar’s brutal murder, she began a nine-year affair with Mark Antony, with whom she had three more children. The subject of gossip and legend, ven-eration and speculation in her lifetime, Cleopatra fasci-nated the world right up to her death which ushered a new world order, a generation before the birth of Christ. New members are welcome. For information, call Mary at 310-398-7930. SPA’s Social Group meets in the Multipurpose Room, from 12:00 - 2:30 PM, on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. Come join us Monday, Aug 15th, 2011, for lively conversation, friendship, refreshments, and more as we play Bingo. New Members are welcome. For information, call Eva 310-837-4197.

Readings for the weekend of August 14th, 2011

Reading 1 Is 56:1, 6-7 Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him, loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants— all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my cove-nant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Reading II Rom 11:13-15, 29-32 Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all. Gospel Mt 15:21-28 At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.
