Message from Director We are very excited that the State Chamber of Commerce selected St. Patrick’s Cen-ter as Superstar in Business (nonprofit category) for 2014! The Chamber recognized our vital mission, excellent service, and effective operations. Congratulations to the Cen-ter’s employees, volunteers, members, partners, and donors for this very important honor. Twenty-five members of the Center participated in the March for a Culture of Peace in Wilmington on September 27. Many people at the Center have been affected by the vio-lence in the city and our group was well represented among many other concerned or-ganizations
When I Was Young
At the age of nine or ten is where it starts and stops. Now you may ask what stops your youth.
It may start with a cigarette or beer and now you’re hooking school. Bound off to be an old fool.
Running with your gang and doing your thing. Then one day a member of the crew says check this out y’all,
I got something new. Now being down I said I’ll try too. Out comes a needle and a blue bag-
My mind clicks where is the doctor, so what do we do. Now to my surprise comes a soda top and lighter too,
Inside I hide my pride While he tells me the ultimate lie.
This won’t hurt, it will only make you feel brand new. So in the midst of confusion, I go too.
Next day I don’t feel the same, my body hurts with aches and pains. Telling my so-called friend how I feel, he says don’t worry, I have more to ease your pain.
Years go by, I’m doing the same, Only now I need money and I’m doing
Anything and everything. My state of mind has gone, I can’t take it anymore,
I walk through a hospital door. I seek help from a real doctor and counselor too.
Now I’m 48 and feel brand new. I think back over the years and cry a tear of two,
My mind is slow, my heart is broken. I think like a child and once again I’m nine or ten.
And I ask why did I let this begin. Old and gray is all I see, so I ask myself how did this begin?
Like a bolt of light one thought comes to sight that simply says When I was young
Just stop and think is this you?
