TRAVIS OC:What we loved about our bedroom is that it was the fact that it was actually two rooms that had the sitting room off to it. And, we had actually thought about making one big room but, really liked the theme of the sitting room and kind of a place to

get away from it all with the kids.

BETSY OC:It’s a perfect room for really a retreat and, you know, a place that we can just call our own… so we chose warm colors, you know, that would, I guess, relax us when we are in there. And, we built in cabinets and had them painted… and actually we did get our bathroom cabinets painted to carry that same theme through, but that’s as far as we’ve gotten…

CAT OC:So, Betsy, I heard that you love the colors that in your bedroom and it would make total sense to bring them into your bathroom so, cuz the rooms adjoin. And, I heard that you have had your eyes on Travis when you were in 8th grade…

TRAVIS OC: yes… it worked!BETSY OC: That’s true.

CAT OC:Well, then I think you guys want a romantic place to call your own, especially with all the little children you have now.

BETSY OC:Absolutely, that would be great.

discusses choices.

7CAT OC: Well I think you are really going to like the design scheme we have. We are starting with this great yellow fabric. it’s got the golds and the reds that are in your bedroom and, we are going to bring them into your bathroom. And, it also has this tulip motif that picks up on the little tulips that are on your bathroom cabinet (BETSY OC: Right.) which

are really cute.

CAT OC: And, we are going to update the color scheme with this pear green fabric.

BETSY OC: Oh, I like this fabric texture.

CAT OC: Yeah, it’s great and these two are going to make a great valance. And we also have some other coordinating fabrics that are going to show up in some other projects in the room.

CAT OC: And, for the walls… we have this great red. And, it’s going to be more romantic. I mean, what else is more romantic than red?

TRAVIS OC:That’s a good thing.

CAT OC: And, so the valence is this piece here, and the room is going to look pretty much like this.

TRAVIS OC:Look at that….

KELLY OC: Yeah, yes, Travis, you and I, we have a simple project to tackle. We’re going to take these paper mâché trashcan and tissue box and cover is with this beautiful embroidered fabric.

TRAVIS OC:Nice... You’re going to help me right?

APRIL OC:Alright, Betsy, now I got you out of painting but the deal is now you have to help me with the valance. BETSY OC: I’m ready…APRIL OC: Okay, Have you ever sewn before?

BETSY OC:Actually, no. But, I need to learn… I have a daughter and we need to learn to sew together. APRIL OC:Oh, well… definitely, definitely… Well, first lesson. Okay? (BETSY OC: Okay… alright..) We’re going to be making a valence. And, it’s simple. We are going to be sewing a couple of pieces of fabric together. And, we are going to be putting it so that it folds along the top, that way we will have a little contrast. And, we are going to be connecting it to some hold backs with these tabs.

BETSY OC:And, I’m going to make those…

APRIL OC:Yes, you will be making them. You can do it! And, when we are all done it’s going to look like that.BETSY OC:

Cutaway of cording example with cording sticking out of fabric.

:24 12APRIL OC:All right, are you ready to get started? BETSY OC:Absolutely.APRIL OC:Okay, now I’ve already cut and measured our pieces. And, I’ve also presewn the cording while you were up stairs painting. So, you got outta that one… (BETSY: alright!) It’s very simple, thought, all it is… is that you take a piece of contrasting fabric and cut it along the diagonal. And then you just sew the cording inside. See?BETSY OC:I think I could have done that.APRIL OC:You could have done that, it’s fun! Okay, let’s but the pieces together.BETSY OC:Okay.

:16 APRIL OC:Alright, Betsy, now, the reason that I had you stop before you finished was so that you would have a way to turn right side out. Alright, then all you do is just hand stitch it closed.

BESTY OC:I think I can do that.APRIL OC:You want to try that?BESTY OC:SureAPRIL OC:Alright, here you go..BESTY OC:Okay

:35 13APRIL OC:(Finishing stitching) See… You can sew! BESTY OC:I did it.

APRIL OC:Okay, now what we do next, is we fold this green over about 6 inches or so depending on how much of the green you want to see. And then you mark for your tabs. Now, making the tabs are super simple. Alright, now all I did was you take strips of fabric… you measure ‘em, you cut ‘em, and you sew ‘em. That’s it. Now when you sew them you want to sew them so that the right sides are together. (BETSY OC: Okay) And then you flip them right side out.BETSY OC: OkayAPRIL OC:But the trick is attaching them so that they look nice on the valence.

CAT VO:PIN THE LOOPS IN PLACE ACCORDING TO WHERE YOU MARKED. BE SURE TO TUCK UNDER RAW ENDS. THEN SEW IN PLACE.

16:00:54 CU beginning to sew button

:3614a

APRIL OC:Now, if you want to, you can add a little finishing detail and get some covered buttons with fabric. That is really simple to make. All you do is you buy a pack of buttons with backs (BETSY OC: Okay) and then you just follow the instructions on the back. You take your circle of fabric, and your button top… and you put the circle of fabric in first… and then your button top and then you just “moosh” the fabric around the button top. You put in your back… snap it into place. And when it’s done it will look like this then you just sew it into place.

BETSY OC: Ga, that looks easy.

APRIL OC: Very easy…

THIS IS WHERE THE MATERIAL GIRLS COME IN. WE’RE HELPING THE WYRICKS TRANSFORM THEIR MASTER BATHROOM INTO A ROMANTIC SANCTUARY…AND WE’RE DOING IT ALL WITH FABRIC AND A LITTLE PAINT.

OUR FIRST STEP WAS TO RECOMMEND A RICH RED TO COLOR THE WALLS, THEN WE SEWED A SIMPLE BUT DRAMATIC VALANCE FOR THE WINDOW. NOW WE’RE GOING TO ADD FABRIC TOUCHES ELSEWHERE IN THE ROOM.

:50 19 KELLY OC:Okay, Travis, we are going to start our simple project today, BUT with dramatic results. TRAVIS OC:I am ready…KELLY OC: Alright, we’re going to take this paper mâché trashcan, combine it with this beautiful fabric…

TRAVIS OC:Okay. Where do you get one of these?

KELLY OC:Well, we got ours at the local craft store but, we are going to use the same technique on a plastic trashcan or tissue box that you may have already in the house.

TRAVIS OC:Okay, great!

5/2/239

I took a square pattern, and then I cut a hole in the center for the “Kleenex”… okay, and then I made a strip to go around the sides (TRAVIS: Okay) Use some spray adhesive, press it in place, did a little trim… Okay, so we are going to take the same technique to our trashcan.

(TRAVIS: Okay.) So, what this is going to do is it’s going to go around the edges and it’s going to cover the top where it’s not very attractive and we’ll glue that right around. (TRAVIS: Okay.) And, see it will go all the way around so you have a nice clean finished edge. If you can get a little right there and there that would be great…

CAT VO: NOW, PUT A LITTLE FABRIC GLUE ON THE INSIDE RIM OF THE WASTE BASKET… THIS WILL BE FOR THE PART OF THE TRIM THAT WILL FOLD OVER INTO THE BASKET. AND, THEN, APPLY GLUE ALONG THE OUTSIDE EDGE. MATCH UP THE SEAMS, AND AFFIX THE TRIM ALONG THE EDGE, FOLDING OVER AS YOU

:18 27 CAT VO: TRAVIS AND BETSY WYRICK ASKED US TO HELP THEM TRANSFORM THEIR NO FRILLS FAMILY FRIENDLY BATHROOM INTO A ROMANTIC RETREAT.

WE’VE ALREADY SEWN A VALANCE OUT OF RICH GOLDS, REDS AND GREENS…

WE’VE ALSO COVERED A WASTE PAPER BASKET AND LINED ANOTHER BASKET WITH A COORDINATING RED EMBROIDERED FABRIC.

:1828 CAT OC:

People have been embroidering fabric with thread for centuries. And while, hand embroidering is a fine art, machines have actually gotten quite good creating beautiful patterns like on the fabric we are using on our baskets. For another elegant touch for a master bathroom, you can monogram towels.

APRIL OC:Okay, Betsy, the Material Girls, we are suckers for romance. So, we are going to be adding some monogrammed towels to your bathroom. (BETSY: Okay.) Okay. We are just going give it a little more touch of romance and elegance… you know… personalized

BETSY OC:We like that….

APRIL OC:I do to, so that’s going to be our project. But, the thing that I love most about monogramming is that it comes in pretty much every price range. Okay? On the lower end of things you can pretty much go ahead and buy some plain towels, like this… and then you can buy some pre-made monograms…

see?

But, you know, they mostly just come in white and that just doesn’t do it for me….

BETSY OC:No, it doesn’t.

APRIL OC:No, I don’t really like that. But, there is a solution. What you can do is you can buy some fabric paint and you can paint them.

BETSY OC: I knew you would have a solution….

APRIL OC:There’s always a solution to every problem.

See? And then, once you have it painted, go ahead and let it dry. And, then just stitch it in place.

BETSY OC: That’s amazing.

APRIL OC:There’s your monogram… nice and easy.

APRIL OC:Another option is you can take them to a monogramming shop. Like these…. See?

BETSY OC: oh, wow! I love them!

APRIL OC:Me, too. The thing about monogramming shops is that they can monogram through pretty much anything that is a towel. And they have a much wider selection of color for you thread. So, that’s a really good thing about monogram shops. But, the third option, and that’s what we are going to be doing, is the do-it-yourself option.

BETSY OC: Okay…

APRIL OC:So, for that you are going to need… an embroidery machine, or an embroidery-sewing combination machine like we have. (BETSY OC: Okay…) And the first step to that, and for some people the hardest, is deciding the color of thread you want, and the font size and style… so, and the font size will determine what hoop size you’ll need.

5/2/2315

Page 16: 106 Wyrick Bath Papercut

BETSY OC: okay…

APRIL OC:Are you ready to make some tough decisions?

BETSY OC: I am so ready… yes!

APRIL OC:Okay…

CAT VO:EACH MACHINE IS DIFFERENT WHEN IT COMES TO FONT AND SIZE SELECTIONS, SO FOLLOW YOUR MACHINE’S MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS. NEXT, DETERMINE WHERE YOU WANT THE MONOGRAM TO GO ON THE TOWEL, AND PREPARE THE AREA BY SPRITZING IT WITH QUILT BASTING SPRAY. NEXT LAY A SHEET OF STABILIZER ON TOP AND HAND PRESS IT IN PLACE.

NOW, LAY THE TOWEL ON TOP OF THE HOOP, MAKING SURE THE STABILIZED AREA IS CENTERED WITHIN THE HOOP. PRESS THE HOOP INTO PLACE.

APRIL OC:Alright, now we are ready to take it to the machine.

BESTY OC: Alright…

Now when you are working with terry cloth, you want to only use one hoop. Because if you use two hoops, it’s going to be too thick for them to go together. That’s why we had used that sticky stabilizer on the back. If you are trying this at home without me, make sure you put on your embroidery module, and embroidery presser foot. And, in some cases you have a bobbin casing that’s specialized for embroidery.

BESTY OC: Okay…

APRIL OC:Drop your feed dogs… and you are ready to push start.

BETSY OC:Right now?

APRIL OC:Okay, once you’ve finished, you go ahead and take off your stabilizers. And, what’s left of the top layer will come off in water. So, don’t worry about getting off all of the little pieces… just go ahead and wash it.

And, then you are done…

BETSY OC: That is amazing. APRIL OC: Do you like it? BETSY OC: It’s beautiful. I love it. APRIL OC: Looks good. Turned out great!

APRIL OC: Sorry that I didn’t mention, but it takes a little time. I hope that’s okay… cuz, we have one, two, ten left to go…

BETSY OC:Oh, my goodness… okay…

APRIL OC: Let’s get to work

BETSY OC:I guess we’d better.

CAT OC, then to VO: Welcome back to Material Girls.

We’ve been up to our elbows in fabric, working to transform the Wyrick’s master bathroom into a romantic retreat.

CAT VO: BETSY AND TRAVIS HAVE BEEN WORKING RIGHT ALONG WITH US, PAINTING, MAKING A VALANCE FOR THE WINDOW, COVERING BASKETS AND BOXES WITH FABRIC, AND MONOGRAMMING TOWELS.

AS USUAL, WE HAVE A FEW EXTRA TOUCHES WE WANT TO ADD…PLUS A GIFT FOR THE WYRICKS THAT WE THINK THEY WILL REALLY ENJOY…SO WE’VE SENT THEM TO DINNER WHILE WE PULL THE ROOM TOGETHER.

104 EXTRAS AND RE-CAP14:31:28 – 14:31:41 April to camera as she futzes with café curtains. Cutaways of her pointing to rod pocket. B-roll of bead trim.

APRIL OC:Now the valance looks great above the window, but it really doesn’t offer a whole lot of privacy. So, we made some café curtains to finish it off. It’s just a simple panel with a rod pocket along the top. It’s a great way to give a little more privacy to any window.
