Recognize the benefits of bedside ultrasound in trauma patients. 8. Apply strategies for use of bedside ultrasound for victims of blunt and penetrating trauma. 9. Recognize the benefits of minimally invasive spinal surgery over traditional methods. 10. Apply knowledge and strategies to clinical practice related to the utilization of minimally invasive spinal fusions. 11. Recognize the physiological aspects of shock and coagulopathy. 12. Identify techniques for managing a trauma patient experiencing coagulopathy. SpeakersMary O. Aaland, MD, FACSDr. Aaland is clinical assistant professor at the University of North Dakota’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Fargo, N.D. Previously, she practiced with Indiana Surgical Specialists, Fort Wayne, and served as medical director of Trauma Services and the Surgical Trauma ICU for Parkview Hospital. Dr. Aaland is board-certified in general surgery and critical care. After earning her medical degree from the University of North Dakota Medical School, Grand Forks, N.D., she completed a burn research fellowship at Shriners Burn Hospital, Galveston, Texas. Dr. Aaland was also a J.D. Martin Trauma Fellow at Emory University, Atlanta, Ga.

Jason J. Heisler, DODr. Heisler is an orthopedic trauma surgeon practicing with Ortho NorthEast (ONE) in Fort Wayne. A member of ONE’s specialty medical team TraumaONE, he provides trauma surgery services for Parkview Adult and Pediatric Trauma Centers at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Ind. Dr. Heisler joined ONE after completing his fellowship in orthopedic trauma with OrthoIndy at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, East Lansing, Mich., and completed his general surgery internship and residency at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing, Mich.

Walter P. Jacobsen, DODr. Jacobsen is a neurosurgeon practicing with Fort Wayne Neurological Center in Fort Wayne. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Chicago, Ill., and completed his neurosurgery residency at Upstate Medical Center, State University of New York (SUNY), Syracuse, N.Y., and Albany Medical Center, Albany, N.Y.

Thomas P. Dykstra, MD, FACEPDr. Dykstra is an emergency medicine physician practicing with Professional Emergency Physicians, Inc., in Fort Wayne since 1994. He earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Bloomington and Indianapolis, Ind., and completed his internship and residency at the Methodist Hospital of Indiana, also in Indianapolis. He has long been involved in emergency medical services. He currently serves as chairman of the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority Board of Directors.

Tyler G. Johnson, DODr. Johnson is an emergency medicine physician practicing with Professional Emergency Physicians, Inc., in Fort Wayne. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Bradenton, Fla., and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Michigan State University Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies, Kalamazoo, Mich.

R. Lawrence Reed II, MD, FACS, FCCMDr. Reed is director of Trauma Services at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital and professor of surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, both in Indianapolis, Ind. He earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, Va., and completed a general surgery residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, El Paso, Texas. Dr. Reed completed fellowships at Virginia Mason Research Center and the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center, both located in Seattle, Wash.

Steven A. Santanello, DO Dr. Santanello is a board-certified surgeon practicing with Parkview Physicians Group – Surgical Specialists in Fort Wayne. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, Biddeford, Me., and completed his internship and residency at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and his trauma and critical care fellowship training at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, where he went on to serve in numerous roles, including medical director of Trauma Services.
