A SERVICE OF HYMNS OF PRAISE AND THANKS TO GOD FOR OUR NATION

+ + + Gathering + + +

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. GATHERING MUSIC O Beautiful for Spacious Skies - arr. Charles Callahan

Mark Koehler, organ .

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*GATHERING HYMN My Country, 'Tis of Thee (America)

*Please stand, as able.

This hymn was written by Samuel Smith and first sung on July 4, 1831, while the United States was still a young nation. It is the last verse that makes this a Christian hymn, for we believe that God is the ultimate “author of liberty" and will sustain the light of freedom by his mighty protection. “Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants," Leviticus 25:10, is the inscription found on the Liberty Bell.

*GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

SUNDAY MORNING 10:45 FESTIVAL WORSHIP July 5, 2020 - National Holiday

*LITANY OF PRAISE Read responsively

As we raise our nation’s flag in celebration,

we lift our hearts to you, O Lord,

for the blessings you have given to this nation of ours.

As we sing hymns and anthems

we praise you, O Father, for the freedoms we enjoy.

“For freedom, Christ has set us free.”

We are reminded that you guide all history;

the kingdom of this world.

Your reign is eternal and all powerful;

the kingdom of heaven.

May we be your humble servants,

serving your people in this place and throughout the world.

May our love for all God’s people be evident.

Carry this nation to a future filled with justice and promise. Amen.

*HYMN O Beautiful for Spacious Skies

This hymn was written by Katherine Lee Bates (1859-1929), with music by Samuel A. Ward (1814-1884). In 1893 Katherine Bates traveled from her native New England across America to the Columbia Exposition in Chi-cago (“alabaster cities”) and on to Pike’s Peak in Colorado (“purple mountain majesties”). She was inspired to write this poem about the beauty of our country and the bravery of the first pioneers who carried the ideals of freedom westward. The second half of each stanza prays for God’s help in achieving the lofty goals.

*PRAYERS OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus, thou who art the way, the truth, and the life; hear us as we pray for the truth that shall make all free. Teach us that liberty is not only to be loved but also to be lived. Liberty is too precious a thing to be buried in books. It costs too much to be hoarded. Help us see that our liberty is not the right to do as we please, but the opportunity to please to do what is right. Amen - Peter Marshall, before the U.S. Senate

Lord of all the worlds, guide this nation by your Spirit to go forward in justice and freedom. Give to all our people the blessings of well-being and harmony, but above all things give us faith in you, that our nation may bring glory to your name and blessings to all peoples, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen - Evangelical Lutheran Worship

ANTHEM Saints Bound for Heaven - American Folk Hymn, arr. Howard Helvey

Women’s Chorus

Hymns of faith have been an important part of American music from the very beginning. As the settlers moved west into the wilds of Ohio, Kansas and California they often saw the journey on earth as a reflection of life’s journey to Heaven, just as the ancient Israelites journeyed from Egypt to the Promised Land. Songs of “Zion” and “Canaan” were meant for fellow earthly travelers as well as those bound for the heavenly realm. Southern slaves saw the journey out of Egypt as the hope of their release from bondage as well.

+ + + Word + + +

God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 29:4-14 ESV

4 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into ex-ile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. 8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, 9 for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the Lord. 10 “For thus says the Lord: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,

declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 20 Sung responsively - Tone 1

1May the Lord answer you in the | day of trouble,

the name of the God of Ja- | cob defend you; 2send you help from his | holy place

and strengthen you | out of Zion; 3remember | all your offerings

and accept | your burnt sacrifice; 4grant you your | heart’s desire

and prosper | all your plans. 5We will shout for joy at your victory and triumph in the name | of our God;

may the Lord grant all | your requests. 6Now I know that the Lord gives victory to | his anointed;

he will answer him out of his holy heaven,

with the victorious strength of | his right hand. 7Some put their trust in chariots and | some in horses,

but we will call upon the name of the | Lord our God. 8They collapse | and fall down,

but we will arise | and stand upright. 9O Lord, give victory | to the king

and answer us | when we call.

SECOND READING 1 T imothy 2:1-7 ESV

2:1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, Alleluia pg. 151

*GOSPEL Matthew 22:15-22 ESV

The holy gospel according to Matthew, the twenty-second chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthful-ly, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore ren-der to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 When they heard it, they mar-veled. And they left him and went away.

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY Before You, Lord, We Bow ELW 893

Francis Scott Key (1779-1843), noted as the author of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ also wrote this hymn ‘For the Fourth of July, 1832.’

*LITANY A Call for the Blessing of Almighty God - adapted from Dwight D. Eisenhower

Before all else we seek, upon our common labor as a nation,

the blessing of Almighty God.

And the hopes in our hearts fashion the deepest prayers of our whole people.

May we pursue the right — without self-righteousness.

May we know unity — without conformity.

May we grow in strength — without pride in self.

May we, in our dealings with all peoples of the earth,

speak the truth and serve justice.

May the light of freedom, coming to all darkened lands, flame brightly —

until at last the darkness is no more.

May the turbulence of our age yield to a true time of peace,

when men and women and nations share a life that honors the dignity of each,

the humanity of all.

*PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

After each portion of the prayers:

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

*HYMN Christ, by Heavenly Hosts Adored (Sung to St. George’s, Windsor)

This prayer in the form of a hymn was written by the Rev. Henry Harbaugh of Pennsylvania

and first published in 1860 under the title “A National Litany.”

1. Christ, by heav'nly hosts adored, Gracious, mighty, sov’reign Lord, God of nations, King of kings, Head of all created things, By the Church with joy confessed, God the Son forever blessed, Pleading at your throne we stand, Save your people, bless our land.

2. On our fields of grass and grain Send, O Lord, the kindly rain, And throughout this spacious land Crown the labors of each hand. Let your kind protection be Over commerce on the sea. Open, Lord, your bounteous hand; Bless your people, bless our land.

3. Give us rulers faithful, true, Such as love and honor you; Let the powers you ordained Be in righteousness maintained. In the people's hearts increase Love of piety and peace. Thus united, we shall stand One wide, free, and happy land.

*THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD

Luther held that the Word and Sacraments were central in our worship. On Sundays when we do not celebrate the Sacrament of Communion, we thank God for the gift of the Word which we have received.

Let us pray.

O God of justice and love, we give thanks to you that you illumine our way through life with the words of your Son. Give us the light we need, awaken us to the needs of others, and at the end bring all the world to your feast; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever. Amen.

*LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

+ + + Sending + + +

God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

*BLESSING *SENDING SONG It is God Who Holds the Nations (Battle Hymn)

Sung to the famous American tune Battle Hymn, this contemporary hymn text, written by Fred Pratt Green for Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, is inspired by four verses from Scripture

— Romans 13:1, Proverbs 14:34, I Peter 2:13 and Acts 17:26.

1. It is God who holds the nations in the hollow of his hand; it is God whose light is shining in the darkness of the land; it is God who builds his city on the Rock and not on sand: The living God be praised!

Refrain: Glory, glory! Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! Glory, glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

2. It is God whose purpose summons us to use the present hour; who recalls us to our senses when a nation's life turns sour; in the discipline of freedom we shall know his saving power: The living God be praised!

Refrain

3. When a thankful nation, looking back, has cause to celebrate those who win our admiration by their service to the State; when self-giving is a measure of the greatness of the great: The living God be praised!

Refrain

4. God reminds us every sunrise that the world is ours on lease; for the sake of life tomorrow may our love for it increase; may all races live together, share its riches, be at peace: The living God be praised!

Refrain *DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.

As we go on our way, the ushers will dismiss each row, beginning at the back.

Offerings may be left in the basket in the narthex. *POSTLUDE God of Our Fathers - arr. Keith Christopher Mark Koehler, piano
