Since the last issue of Manor RoyalNews much has happened. That saidalthough there is progress beingmade, there is not much for thebusinesses to see yet.

Over the next couple of months thatwill change.

• We want to change all of thesignage for street names, in order toportray Manor Royal as an up to dateBusiness District. The tenders forthe work have gone out and we willselect a company very soon

• Jogging routes have been mappedout and are being marked

• Two learning lunches have takenplace focussing on apprenticeshipsand recruitment and management, plus we are getting feedback frombusinesses to establish if theywant more

• Establishment of the Manor RoyalBusiness Watch

• We are looking at how we can jointlyprocure our waste collection andrecycling, therefore reducing costs.

These are just a few of the areas wehave been concentrating on, theseand others will be covered in thisedition.

We have taken stock of what peopleare saying, what they want ManorRoyal to be, what the priorities areand how we can make Manor Royal amore attractive place to do business.

This has been the foundation for ourbusiness plan which has beenestablished.

We have a vision:

“For Manor Royal to becomerecognised as the South East’sleading mixed activity employmenthub and the location of choice foremployers, employees and visitors”.

We have three aims:

1. Increase the overall satisfaction with Manor Royal among existing businesses and employees.

2. Attract more investment and business to Manor Royal.

3. Improve the ability of Manor Royal businesses to trade with one another and reduce costs.

We have four objectives:

1. More business and trade2. More attractive and secure3. More savings and shared services4. More active active management

and promotion.

We have many deliverables ...

It’s also good to see that progress isbeing made on the former GSK site, now named Principal Park. Tesco.comand various other new occupiers arealso moving in to the area.

We are very pleased that West SussexCounty Council has allocated£600,000 to invest in InfrastructureProjects. This has created moreoptions with our finance plan.

I would like to thank Crawley BoroughCouncil and West Sussex CountyCouncil for their continued supportand encouragement.

I hope you enjoy reading this editionand don’t forget …….. keep in touch

What a waste!

One of the stated objectives of the ManorRoyal Business Group is to create moresavings and shared services. This hascome up as being something of interest tolocal firms and waste and recycling areareas that seem to offer potential for this.

So the Manor Royal Waste ManagementCourse was born. Delivered by Dr RyanWoodward of the University of Brighton,it’s supported by the Manor RoyalBusiness Group and Crawley BoroughCouncil’s Green Business Programme.

The first introductory session took placeat ITW Construction on Fleming Way andprovided some interesting insights.

Waste is costing us more year-on-year, butthere is the potential for businesses tomake and save money on their waste andrecycling – especially by working together.Future sessions will go on to look at howthese benefits might be achieved. Running alongside this is work being

overseen on behalf of the BusinessGroup by easitCRAWLEY andReMade:southeast to assess wasteand recycling activity across theBusiness District. By taking part in aconfidential survey we will be able toassess the potential to combine forces

to negotiate a better collective deal forour waste and recycling services.

Visit the easit and the Environmentpage in the Business Life section ofthe website for all the presentationsfrom the Waste Management Courseand to take part in the survey.

We don’t mind working hard but, ideally, we want things to be aseasy as possible. Featured here aretwo new initiatives designed tomake life easier for Manor Royal.

Run Manor Royal

With the help of runners fromVirgin Atlantic and the CrawleyWellbeing Team, we have plottedfour jogging routes of varyingdistances. Whether you are juststarting out or a runningenthusiast you should findsomething to suit.

Try out the “yellow” one-mile routearound the central block of ManorRoyal. The two-mile “red” routetakes in Fleming Way and ManorRoyal road, while the “blue” routetakes joggers towards Crawleytown centre before heading backalong the tree-lined cycle path onNorthgate Avenue. For the moreadventurous, the “green” five-mileroute takes off on a loop towardsGatwick.

All the routes are circular andcan be joined up to create longerruns or just to add a bit ofvariety. Over the next fewweeks we will be installing theway markers, pavementmarkings and producing anonline route guide.

Keeping healthy and building asense of community. They’re notbad things to try and do and youcan do both on Manor Royal. Here’s how.

Following the announcement by WestSussex County Council a case has to bemade for how these funds would beused to support growth in the area.Installing CCTV, investing in a businesscentre/hub and undertaking variousimprovements to open space and areaswhere parking is problematic havebeen suggested. Some of this willdepend on the alignment to, andsupport for, the emerging businessplan. Your thoughts are invited to helpshape the case we need to make.

More than 140 individuals have giventheir views either through face-to-facemeetings or at events to help shapewhat it is that Manor Royal needs. Thatdoesn’t include email and othercorrespondence. The event in Octoberwas an important milestone.

This has resulted in the production of thebusiness plan with the working title

“Delivering more for Manor Royal”. Thespine of the plan is based on one visionwith three aims, four objectives and manydeliverables aligned to each of the fourobjectives alongside a clear but flexibleapproach to lobbying and influencing keystakeholders on certain important issues.

Danwood supply the (printmanagement) solution

When looking for a company to assistin improving business processes, it canbe immensely helpful to have abusiness close at hand to provideessential advice and support. That isexactly what Manor Royal occupantB&CE discovered when it needed helpwith its aging copier fleet. Danwoodstepped up and was able to quicklyrespond with a number of ways toachieve cost reductions and improveefficiency.

Danwood is Europe’s largest, independent supplier of printmanagement solutions – and has had abranch on the Manor Royal District forthe past five years. Being part of ManorRoyal enabled businesses like Danwoodand B&CE to find each other, soincreased business opportunities play abig role in why Danwood enjoysengaging in this community.

Gordon Dent, Danwood AccountManager, said: “Having involvement inthe open forums to discuss issueswithin the Business District, along withother local businesses, has also been adefinite advantage.”

Needless to say, Danwood is pleased tohelp other businesses and is offering afree print audit to assess your printoperations and provide a benchmark forsavings. For more information call KerrieHester on 01293 615470 or [email protected]

As part of our regular featurefocusing on the huge variety offirms on Manor Royal, this time weintroduce two companies who arealready providing services to otherlocal companies. Of course, theywould like more – wouldn’t you?

Bon Appetit – serving up alocal success.Bon Appetit is the leading supplier ofhot food vending in the UK and hasbeen on Manor Royal since 1995. As anational operation, Manor Royal wasselected for its excellent connectionswith the M23 and M25, and has provedto be an ideal base for its operationsfor more than 25 years.

Chief Executive Keith Pordum, the manbehind Bon Appetit, is well known tomany. He is committed to supportinglocal business as a director (and pastchairman) of CADIA, theGatwick Diamond BusinessAssociation, as well assupporting initiatives tosupport the continuedsuccess of the BusinessDistrict.

Bon Appetit operates anefficient business modelfrom its operation in the BellCentre, where it has beensince 2000. Most of itssupport functions such as foodmanufacture, finance and IT areoutsourced allowing it to operate on ateam of only 11 employees.

That might make Bon Appetit one ofthe many smaller employers, as 90%per cent of all Manor Royal businesses

are, but it can boast a number of majorcompanies among its client list.

Keith said: “We provide workplacecatering solutions for national clientslike Nestle, Unilever, Honda, CambridgeUniversity, Barclays, the NHS and RAF,

and a number on Manor Royalitself including Royal Mail,Varian Medical Systems,Oxford Aviation and TokyoElectron.”

It would also appear that BonAppetit is bucking the recentgloomy trend. “The difficulteconomic conditions haveproved to be good news forus,“ claims Keith. “Our hot

food vending service isavailable 24 hours a day, every day, andsaves more than 90 per cent of the costof a conventional canteen.”

Not bad, and Keith is happy to extend aspecial 25 per cent discount to allbusinesses located in the BusinessDistrict. Check out the Promotions andDiscounts page on the Local Lifesection of the website for details, orpay Keith a visit at Unit 11, The BellCentre.
