Telephone Scam To Get Into Your PC Over the past few weeks, Paul at Professor PC has been advised by a number of clients that they have been telephoned by individuals, usually with Asian accents, purporting to come from Microsoft or Windows. They usually start the conversation by stating that they have noticed that the client’s computer has been infected by a virus or is running slow which they have been put down to either a virus or malware related problem. The firm then asks if they can take remote control of your PC so they can fix the problem. Once they have access to the PC, the firm runs a few scans and demands an annual fee for tuning up your PC. One client Paul visited following such an introduction, refused to pay the £160 and the next time he started up his PC it told him various files were missing and wouldn’t boot up. Luckily, Paul was able to recover the PC and get him up and running again. However, this begs the question, what other data have these people extracted from the PC without his knowledge?

Please be aware that this is just another scam to extract money from you. Firstly, just using your PC in the normal way does not give Microsoft details such as your name and telephone number. These are simply individuals who prey on people’s fears and ask a couple of questions to which they hope to receive positive responses – such as ‘Have you noticed your PC running slow?’ The majority of PCs run slow over time anyway, so this question will hit home to most people. Anyone can fall prey to these people but the elderly or those new to computing are most vulnerable. If you need your PC looked at or feel it is running slow, then please ask a professional to look at it, such as Professor PC and don’t be tempted to go along with this scam. Just ask yourself the question, how do they know I have a computer and how do they know my name and telephone number? The answer is that they have looked you up in the telephone directory and assume, as most people do, that you own a computer. They also assume you have heard the name Microsoft or Windows.

If you do get contacted by someone in this way, simply hang up the phone. Do not get roped in and do not give them access to your PC - they can easily plant a file which will then send data back to them from your PC.
