Associated Students of New Mexico State University will begin the 5th annual “Keep State Great” event Saturday, to clean and beautify the NMSU campus for homecoming activities. Volunteers will work in con!"#$%&'#( )&%*( %*+( ,-.$+( '-( /0cilities and Services Grounds Department and the “Keep Las Cruces Beautiful” program to perform a variety of jobs at more than 20 sites around campus,
including mulching, painting, gathering pine needles and trash pickup all over campus, said Mario Ulibarri, ASNMSU Director of Community Outreach. “It brings the whole campus together,” Ulibarri said. “It’s a great way for oncampus organizations to do their service hours.” The event will begin at 9 a.m. on the International Mall between Corbett Center and Monagle Hall, where organizations may sign up, receive tshirts and eat breakfast. Volunteers will begin work around 9:30 a.m. and will spend four hours on the job, Ulibarri said. The project was originally de

As of Monday, at least 30 campus organizations had signed up for the event, Ulibarri said. Ulibarri said he expects around 400 people to volunteer, and there may be more than last year. Although many volunteers come from campus groups, any student or faculty member is eligible to participate. Last year, as many as 50 individual members of the NMSU community joined to help, Ulibarri said. The most expensive part of
the project is the tshirts, Uli7088&(30&9:((/''9(&3(#'%(0#(&33"+;(because local businesses such as Roberto’s, Starbucks and Durango Bagel provide food donations for the volunteers, Ulibarri said. Cruzado’s Background Cruzado served NMSU as Interim President in the fall of 2008 and established new programs and made efforts that led to an increase in student enrollment, among other achievements, according to www.nmsu.edu. Cruzado was replaced by Interim President Manuel Pacheco for the fall 2009 semester and assumed the role of NMSU executive vice president and provost, according to the NMSU Web site.

Less than five games into conference play in its inaugural season, the New Mexico State University soccer team has already made history. The Aggies were ranked 49th in a poll done by Top Drawer Soccer, a Web site that projects the postseason college soccer tournament qualifiers, including automatic conference berths. “It’s an honor for our program,” soccer coach Michael Needham said. “No one expected us to be where we’re at and now we have to stay there.” The Aggies are also defying the odds in the Western Athletic Confer
ence, winning their first three games in WAC play and tying the last game against San Jose State. The Aggies are 821 in their last 11 games. Needham said he is very pleased with his team’s effort. “We’re playing confident soccer,” Needham said. “It’s easy to motivate [the team] when we are winning. We just take things one game at a time.” Needham said the Aggies are “developing a culture of success,” despite the program being in its first year. “It’s very challenging to develop a program,” Needham said. “It normally takes four to five years to develop a culture of winning.” Part of the Aggie success has been senior goalkeeper Katie Graul. Graul
was named WAC defensive player of the week for her play Oct. 5 through 11 and posted two shutouts in a win over Fresno State and a tie to San Jose State. Graul and the Aggies have only allowed two goals in WAC play and have recorded three shutouts in their first four conference games. “Katie has really embraced the team,” Needham said. “A lot of coaches talk about how they don’t want their goalkeepers losing games for them. Katie Graul wins games for us. She makes incredible saves for us.” For the young team, making the WAC tournament is its short term

All good things must come to an end. For the New Mexico State University volleyball team, a 03 loss to the University of New Mexico on Tuesday night ended a ninegame winning streak against the Lobos. “UNM passed the ball real well,” head volleyball coach Mike Jordan said. “They didn’t allow us to get into an offensive rhythm.” Both teams were relatively matched on offense. UNM had 40 assists, compared to NMSU’s 36. The Aggies lacked a more aggressive offense. Despite having just four fewer assists, the Lobos’ team attack total was .255 while the Aggies ended with just .073. “We were not aggressive offen
sively,” Jordan said. “We were errorprone and too soft out there.” Statistically, UNM has been an average defense all year, but they were able to double their defensive blocks against the Aggies on Tuesday. UNM averages more than 6 blocks per 3set game. In the 3set game against NMSU, they recorded 12 blocks. The ninegame winning streak against UNM dated all the way back to 2003. The last time the Aggies lost to the Lobos was Sept. 24, 2002. Despite maintaining such dominance over the last decade, the loss to UNM should not be considered an upset, Jordan said. “Give credit to UNM,” Jordan said. “They were a good team.” From top to bottom, the Mountain West Conference stacks up
better than the WAC. The Aggies’ current second place position in the WAC and UNM’s fifth place standing in the MWC does not necessarily mean the Aggies have the advantage. With the disappointing loss aside, the Aggies can only look ahead to the game at 8 p.m. Thursday against San Jose State. The Spartans are currently 04 in the WAC. No season is a cake walk. There will always be the tough losses or the “shouldn’thavebeen” wins. As such, these games provide a chance for learning and improvement, Jordan said. The Aggies need to become more consistent, Jordan said. Every win for NMSU has come when the Aggies had more assists than their opponents, just as every loss
has come when they had fewer assists. The Aggies have a higher winning percentage on the road than at home. The Aggies also struggle with adaptation. So far this season, the Aggies have shown the inability to weather a shaky start. The Aggies are 70 after winning the first set and 16 after loosing the first set.

Police said Colston hit his girlfriend several times in the face, kicked her and pushed her against a wall, according to the AP report.“Marquell was charged with a third degree felony late Monday afternoon after an altercation with his livein girlfriend from California,” athletics director McKinley Boston said Tuesday at a football press conference.Head football coach DeWayne Walker issued the following statement Tuesday:“I am suspending Marquell Colston indefinitely from the New Mexico State University football team based upon information I have received regarding an offcampus incident Monday morning with a nonNMSU student. Colston is immediately suspended from any and all participation with the football team. Colston will not be present at meetings, practices or any other team activity. I am extremely disappointed that Colston has chosen to violate team rules and at this point I have no further comments.”In addition to Walker suspending

The most challenging part of
coaching a young team is not push
ing them too far, Needham said.
“It’s hard because you see how
good they can be,” Needham said.
“But you need to be patient with
them and not stress them out.
Games are already stressful enough,
so we try to keep training as fun and
stressfree as possible.”
The Aggies pride themselves on
working harder than any other team.
In the past 216 minutes of game play,
the Aggie defense has not given up a
goal.
“When you tell them to do some
thing, they don’t ask questions. They
just do it,” Needham said.
Despite the team’s accolades so
far this season, Needham said he
keeps pushing for improvement.
“We need to be better at imposing
ourselves on the opponent,” Need
ham said.
The Aggies also attained a ranking
in attendance. The Aggies are ranked
in the top 20 in the country for game
attendance. The Aggies average ap
proximately 1,100 fans per home
game.
“We need to get the support up
from the students and the commu
nity,” Needham said. “Big crowds
help us continue develop a culture of
success.”
The Aggies will take the field
against Hawai’i Sunday at Aggie

Seasons change, years go by,
we adopt ecologically friendly
buses and we recycle like crazy.
But even though New Mexico
State University is taking a
more avantgarde approach
on campus, we are still lagging
behind when it comes to food.
Taos smells like grease. And
indeed it is infested with fatty
foods, fried burgers, melted
cheese, sugary cakes and, over
all, a passport to obesity and a
step toward cardiovascular dis
ease. Then, further in the heart
of Corbett Center is Crossroads
Food Court, and guess what?
!"#$%&'()*&""+,%-./0*'*1%2$)3%Fresca Grill Mexican food and
soda machines lined one next
to the other. It’s just tempta
tion after temptation. I avoid
food on campus.
Of course those in favor of
Taos argue, “There is a salad
buffet and healthy options
for those who want to stay
healthy”, but the truth is, the
smell of sizzling French fries,
juicy burgers and chocolate
cakes, appeal more to our sens
es than an abandoned salad
buffet. And no one seems to be
really bothered: It’s easy; it’s
yummy and relatively cheap.
With that in mind, and the
health care debate going on,
it would also be good to know
that the $2.3 trillion spent
in health care in the United
States is almost double what
European countries spend per
person in health care. And why
is that? Most likely because we
are fatter, according to a study
from the National Bureau of
Economic Research. Three
quarters of health care money
goes toward preventable
chronic disease: $146 billion to
treat obesity and $116 billion to
treat diabetes.
President Barack Obama is
also talking about food reform
and trying to connect local
farmers to dinning services in
public schools to provide easier
access to fresh and healthy
foods.
“Those kinds of connections
can be made all throughout the
country and has to be part of
how we think about health,”
Obama said.
So it must be time for
change. We have learned to
recycle plastic bottles, we’ve
adopted the idea of sustain
able development, green has
become the new pink, and
we’ve learned how to control
our spending in this recession.
It’s not too late to get one step
ahead.
Say yes to “food reform on
campus.”

Your article [Cruzado’s inter

brilliant. Your style and ques

many of us on campus have
asked the past year. But you
must have more. So, how about
continuing the interview for

one with the Board of Regents
too.

I understand that an opinion
column is just that, someone’s
opinion about a subject mat

journalism school you would
have learned about checking
the facts, even in a sarcastic
opinion. I was chairman of the
board of regents during this
time, as well as chairman of the
search committee, so please
allow me to answer your ques
tions or statements with facts.
A quick check of the facts would
reveal this:
Cruzado never had the sup
port of the faculty senate to
become president. In fact, the
faculty senate never endorsed
a candidate during the search.
The chair of the faculty senate
was on the search committee
and participated in all the meet
ings, including the one that nar

Cruzado never was a candi
date for the position, thus could
not be considered as part of
the search. A university policy
that she acknowledged, did not
allow her to seek the position
while being the interim.
A protest was not staged, but
a rally in support of Cruzado
was staged and attended by 42
students, who carried signs.
Fortytwo students out of
17,000 is hardly a connection.
A Monday morning email
does not a president make.
Mike Martin did not quickly
leave NMSU, after four years
as president at NMSU he was
recruited away by Louisiana
State University, one of the
most prestigious educational
institutes in the country. It is
fair to assume his time spent
and accomplishments at NMSU
had a large role in LSU court
ing him. It should be noted that
prior to the LSU offer, Mike
turned down similar opportuni
ties at Ohio State, Washington
State and Purdue and Auburn,
an impressive list of suitors.
A sexual harassment con
troversy is unfortunately the
rule and not the exception on
college campuses today. More
and more people hide behind
these instead of being willing
to communicate the truth. Last
year there were over 10,000
($89'2%.'#'((:$6)%(9/)(%1%2$+%on campuses throughout the
country, hardly an “administra
tion facing stark criticism”.
The money spent on the pres
idential search was less than
the $150,000 you quote, and
was all private money that was
audited. No university funds
were utilized in the search.
“Still being considered for
the president position at NMSU
that is a good question,” I agree.
All Cruzado has to do is answer
it; she is the only one who can
legally answer that.

Five months after Montana State University Bozeman formed a presidential search committee, the university named its top choice – former New Mexico State University Interim President Waded Cruzado. Five months after NMSU formed a presidential search committee, all we know is “candidate interviews are underway,” according to the NMSU
presidential timelineNo names have been released. !"#$#%&'()*)#+&,-#.--%#)-'-/*-01#The presidential selection process appears stagnant. According to an MSU press release, the MSU presidential search committee was selected on May 12. NMSU selected its /"22(**--#"%#3&4#56#78)*#$#,-#days earlier. Yet, MSU already had rounds of interviews, a
selection of candidates and a president, as Cruzado accepted the position on Wednesday. After the failed attempt to select a president during the presidential search last year, the last thing NMSU needs is a latent and dawdling presidential search. The presidential search committee needs to push fullsteam ahead in selecting an appropri
ate NMSU president replacement before all the prime candidates are poached by other universities, leaving NMSU still presidentless. Perhaps the NMSU search committee should emulate the speedy and seemingly transparent MSU committee. Just a thought.

A collection of stories about
depressionera men, women
and families will be presented
at New Mexico State University
Wednesday.
The NMSU Library will pres
!"#$%&'()$'*$+$,!'-)!.$+/$#0!$1"+)$installment in its yearlong ex
ploration of the Federal Writers’
Project. A documentary, “Soul
of a People: Writing America’s
Story,” will be shown, and two
local storytellers will share sto
ries based on the project.
“The documentary addresses
the Federal Writers’ Project,
which was part of the New Deal
and attempted to put wouldbe
writers to work,” said Mardi Ma
haffy, NMSU humanities librar
ian. “Writers recorded oral his
tories of Americans and wrote
travel guides and histories of the
states, this documentary covers
this part of the initiative.”
The New Deal created a num
ber of programs in the 1930s,
which aimed to put unemployed
Americans back in the work
force in an ultimate attempt to
bring the Depressionera Unit
ed States out of its economic
slump. The Federal Writers’
Project compiled the stories of
typical Americans and produced
many notable writers.
In addition to the documen
tary, the program will feature
stories by two local storytellers.
Dotty Ormes, NMSU govern
ment documents and maps li
brarian, will tell a story about
Jesusita, a late 1800s healer
from Northern New Mexico
who was believed to have been
bewitched and received healing
from a Native American sha
man and later began practicing
herbal healing, Ormes said.
“I tell the story of her brush
with the supernatural and her
transformation into a healer,”
Ormes said. “I wanted to tell a
story from New Mexico and this
one was fascinating, so I chose it
because it resonated with me.”
Jesusita’s story was told by
her great niece, Auralia Gurule,
in 1940 to Lou Sage Batchen, a
writer involved with the project
who recorded the stories of New
Mexicans.
Another local storyteller, Sar
ah Addison, will share a story
told by a former slave.
“The Writers’ Project was a
very meaningful artistic pro
gram,” Ormes said. “It was one
of the most controversial and
yet successful programs. I think
it’s important for students to
understand the Great Depres
sion and its place in history.”
The “Soul of a People” pro
gram will be held at 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the Cre
ative Media Institute Theater
and is free and open to the pub
lic.
