Reception: Reception class had a super week. We went ‘Italian’ on Friday and had a great day. We did lots of ‘Italian’ things. We made pizzas, sold pizzas and learnt to count to 10 in Italian. We also painted flags and made necklaces in the Italian colours!Ms Stoner

Year 1:Year One have had a really good week. The children have returned to school refreshed after their half term break and are working really well.

In Literacy this week we have been concentrating on writing extended sentences through traditional stories. In Numeracy the class have become very adept at knowing what each digit in a two digit number means.

In RE our topic has been Special People and it was very interesting and amusing to see the lovely characters that the children drew of people who are important to them in school! The children have produced some super work in DT and have enjoyed testing out their products.

Their team work skills were brilliant to see and they all enjoyed themselves.Mrs Kent and Mrs Moore

Year 2:This week the children have worked very hard on learning their times-tables to help with fractions. We shared raisins and sweets to work out half and a quarter and three quarters of different amounts. We will keep practising this as some of us found it quite tricky!

In Literacy we have been practising using the past, present and future tense. We were writing sentences and imagining things that we would like to do in the future.

In Geography we looked at the human and physical features of Iceland and thought of features in Brighton and Hove that are

natural or man-made and compared this to Iceland.

For Science, we began to look at materials and discussed which materials are suitable for different things. We all thought it would be funny if a kettle was made of chocolate or trousers made from glass! We also thought about which things in the classroom were made from different materials and wrote lists that were made from plastic, metal, material and wood.

We have enjoyed playing lots of games for PSHE around the topic of friendship and we loved performing a dance/act for the School in assembly.Ms Rosen

Year 3:What a busy week! The Year 3 pupils have been flying through their maths and no one had any problems with multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. Many children got onto the challenge questions - what a hard working bunch they are!In Literacy we have begun to plan and write our diary entries. They are looking really interesting and the children are remembering lots of the features of recounts. We showed off a bit in assembly this week with all the fantastic things that we have been up to at home. Well done Henry, Freya and Isabella - the whole school was amazed by the things you had produced at home. Henry made a timeline so long we couldn’t even show it all in the classroom!Ms Hayward and Mrs Watkins

Year 4:From Mr Gum to Dudley the dog, it seems that everyone we’ve met in our English lessons this week knows how to explain things. If you ask your Year 4 child how a toaster operates or how a vaccination works, they might just be able to put together a convincing explanation.

In our learning, we have focused on the kind of language we need to use to make explanations clear and detailed. We have spotted lots of time connectives and causal connectives in different pieces of explanation writing and we most enjoyed a piece of writing that explained how the amazing Teacher Pleaser machine works.

Next week we will be preparing to write some detailed explanations of our own using some of the techniques we have been studying. In the meantime, if any of the Year 4 pupils manage to build the Teacher Pleaser machine from the diagrams they drew, you can expect to see some very happy Deepdene teachers. Watch this space, Mrs Gann and Mrs Ash!Mrs Croucher

In Maths this week, we have been adding and subtracting 0.1 and 1 (or multiples of them) from numbers with one decimal place. We have practised the skill of dividing by 10 in the form of a maths division maze and have been calculating temperature drops using positive and negative numbers, across zero on temperature tables.

We have also been practising the 7 times table out loud, using actions and funny voices. This has been fun!Mrs Gann and Mrs Ash

Year 5 and 6:The entries have been coming in all week for the two whole school competitions led by Year 6 pupils Seth and Georgia. Seth’s buddy bench sign competition has been extremely popular across the school and it will soon be time for Seth to help decide which art work should be used to decorate the school’s new buddy bench. Georgia’s competition to raise funds for Arundel House charity has also seen some fantastic entries from pupils across the school. Through their posters and leaflets, we have been learning how to look after all manner of pets, from unicorns to penguins! Watch this space to find out who will win!

As far as curriculum news goes, it’s an Art and Science update this week for Years 5 and 6. I shall leave you in the capable hands of Mrs Viney and Ms Jambor:

Year 5:In Science this week, Year 5 have been working on the topic ‘Changing states’. We are building on our previous knowledge of ‘states of matter’, particularly gases. We have been experimenting with turning liquids into gases, and studied the process of ‘boiling’. The children learned to use key vocabulary, such as ‘vapour’, ‘evaporating’, ‘atmosphere’ and made a ‘Concept Map’ describing this process.

Year 5 have completed their canvases entitled ‘Outer Space’, a

tempera painting that has enabled them to explore techniques of 3D representation: in this case a low horizon line, shapes that diminish as they recede, highlighting and shading. They are now attempting 3D lettering before turning their attention to one point perspective and the vanishing point. It was a wonderful moment when the pupils stepped back from their paintings to realise that these techniques really work and that they had created the illusion of 3D!

Year 6:This week In Science, Year 6 have started working on the topic ‘Forces in Action’ recalling their knowledge of ‘pushes’ and ‘pulls’ from previous Science studies. The children explored the various meanings of the word ‘force’ and carried out a simple experiment on building a catapult. We identified various forces taking place while shooting a paper ball ‘out to space’. It was an interesting and fun lesson!

In Art, Year 6 pupils are continuing their study of the Portrait as a genre in art. Before half-term they completed portraits in both Expressionist and Surrealist styles using oil pastels and collage respectively. Now they are turning their attention to full length imaginary portraits, considering the proportions of the human body as well as how to represent human characteristics. I asked them how they could make me guess the occupation or character of their subject with some fabulous results! I must comment on the Year 6 pupils for this week’s work; they are really engaging with this topic and working with real thoughtfulness and interest. Well done, everyone.Mrs Croucher, Mrs Viney and Ms Jambor

The fastest time for the 50 question grid goes to Isaac with a fabulous time of 2 minutes and 9 seconds. Isaac will be progressing to the 77 question grid next week. Well done!

The fastest time for the 77 question grid was Abraham with 2 minutes 32 seconds. Super!

Although there were lots of impressive improvements this week, the title for most improved time goes to Sidney. He managed to improve his previous week’s time by over 6 minutes - wow!

A big well done to lots of the children who maintained their full marks score this week, but a special well done to Sidney who was able to improve his score by 17 correct answers.

I am thrilled to say that there are some Year 4 children who are now ready for their next challenge. Next week they will be using the 77 question grid. Excellent news!
