Manning Architects, in collaboration with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, worked on the conceptual and schematic design of a new world-class international airport terminal for the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Manning was tasked with incorporating an authentic New Orleans experience into the design of the new terminal. Manning’s primary focus was on providing a continuous link between the traveler and the exterior environment. By allowing the abundance of natural light to permeate the interior, travelers would be exposed to its variation throughout the day and year.

Built in 1924, this former school, left vacant for thirty years and gutted, was converted into twenty-two apartment units. Because the development received historic tax credits, it posed the challenge of maximizing the number of units while creating livable spaces and maintaining original partition locations. The design drew from the historic context and thoughtfully reused existing elements, such as salvaged wood screens, chalkboard paint accent walls, and tile that mimics the exterior brick pattern. The site features permeable paving, rain gardens, and a pool deck. In the school’s former auditorium, a mezzanine was added to provide parking at the ground level with units above, and the raked seating was encapsulated to create loft spaces.
