Self-love used to bea vice, but nowadaysit is the nearest thingto a virtue, as asupposedprecondition of ourown mental health(whatever that mightbe).
An Irish friend kindly forwarded me an article from The IrishTimes reporting on a school in County Dublin that, on St.Valentine’s Day, encouraged children to write Valentinecards to themselves. They were supposed to inscribe inthem what they loved about themselves, on the theory thatself-love is a precondition to success, happiness, andresilience, and should therefore be taught early andprobably incessantly.
My view is that the head teacher of the school ought to begiven hemlock to drink for corrupting youth, but I acceptthat some people might think this punishment a littlesevere. Indeed, there are some people—the author of thearticle among them, a psychotherapist—who think thepromotion of youthful self-satisfaction and conceit anexcellent idea, the key to the little ones’ future happiness.
I looked up the school’s mission statement on the internet.Suffice it to say that it contained few surprises, other thanthe fact that it existed at all. It was the expected drearycatalog of modern pieties, among them the celebration ofthe uniqueness of the child and respect for diversity oftraditions, values, and beliefs, irrespective of the particularnature or content of those traditions, values. and beliefs. As for “celebrating” uniqueness: How is it to be done? Bygetting the little geniuses to chant “I am unique, you areunique, we are all unique, everyone is unique!” whileholding hands and dancing round a tree as the teacherbeats the rhythm on a tambourine?

“Self-love usedto be a vice, but nowadaysit is the nearestthing to avirtue.”
The tide of cliché has been risingfor years, despite (or, asSchopenhauer would no doubthave said, because of) the ever-greater proportion of educatedpersons in the population. Itrequires a certain level ofeducation, after all, to be able towrite the following, taken atrandom from the article in The Irish Times:
Self-esteem matters, and as children are still formingcore beliefs about themselves, adults can engage withthem to really tune in to that fact.
No person who had left school at the age of 12 could havewritten such a sentence, which of course is a very powerfulargument for reducing, as a preventive measure, the age atwhich children leave school. No mere ignoramus, no childsent down the mines at the age of 6, could ever haveuttered these words, which somehow manage to combinedogmatism with absence of clear meaning.
But let us examine some of the more easilycomprehensible, though not necessarily worthwhile, sentiments expressed in the article:
A child who develops such beliefs as “I am kind, I amcompetent, I am lovable” will likely find themselves [sic]on a path to good self-esteem. A child who, on the otherhand, develops more negative beliefs about himself, suchas “I have no talent, I am not liked by others” will likelyhave lower self-esteem and this can affect their [sic]mental health.
What is most remarkable about this is that neither here norelsewhere in the article does the author think it necessaryfor there to be some objective correlative of the belief. Thatis to say, it is perfectly in order for the child to have a beliefabout himself that is completely unrelated to any of hisconduct. According to this view of the matter, a child can,and indeed ought to, remind himself that he is kind whilehe is pulling the legs and wings off a fly or throwing stonesthrough an old lady’s front window. As angels to wantonboys are we to the psychologists.
Criminals, especially the vicious rather than the merelypathetic ones, have very high self-esteem. They aregenerally proud of how awful they have been and positivelyswagger with satisfaction at their own competence in thematter of causing misery to others. They too have “corebeliefs” about themselves, all of them highly flattering. They even think they are lovable as well as admirable.
The author wasn’t just having an off day such as we allhave whenever we try to think. Here is what she wrote in2 Tweet101Like t

the same journal just before Christmas last year:
There hasbeen a lot oftalk lately, at anational, localand personallevel, abouttheimportance ofputting mentalhealth frontand centre. Therefore, as
the Christmas season approaches, during this time ofgift-giving, we have an opportunity to focus on what wecan gift to ourselves, in order to impact in a positive wayon our mental health.
And what is the gift we can give ourselves? “Living lifeauthentically, getting in tune with our true sense of how wewish to be in this world.” And what if what we really, truly, and authentically wish to be is Caligula? Well, “research”(before which we must all bow down and worship) showsthat “when we are authentic…even if it sets up to bedifferent from others, it still correlates with increased levelsof joy and wellbeing.” Oh, happy, happy Caligula!
When reading this kind of saccharine psychological bilge, Ifeel rather (though not exactly) as I do after having eatentoo many chocolate truffles at a sitting. Alternatively, onemight call the thoughts of the author of the articlespsychological kitsch. Kitsch is hard to define but easy torecognize: It is a kind of sentimental garishnessapproximating or imitating, but not attaining, art. Thesearticles are conspicuously sentimental, written withsomething approximating or imitating, but not attaining, thought.
I asked a fishmonger what he thought of the idea ofchildren sending themselves Valentine cards inscribed withwhat they loved about themselves.
“Valentine’s Day is bad enough,” he said, “without bringingchildren into it.”
Now, that’s what I call a genuine thought.

Bingo! As the the end of every monthapproaches, JJ's medication fails, orsome other cyclical pathologymanifests itself. It's like clockwork. Then the vile, boorish, ill-bred stormblows over, and another pleasantpersona suddenly appears, only tohave The Portrait Of Dorian Grayreveal itself over the ensuing weeks.

That's a hilarious analogy! I don'tmind JJ so much, as he is a regularfixture and it's easy to spot him whenhe resurfaces. It's these "other" oneswho switch accounts... 6△ ▽

JJ seems to be able to hold one of hispersonas for between 3 and 6 posts. At that point, his verbal tics begin toleak through, and he'll begin to rantabout his engineering degrees, orhow stupid "right-wingers" are orsomething. These others, such as theblack fellow yesterday or the"Muslim" the day before appear to bea new phenomenon, perhaps relatedto Ms. Clinton putting "our kind" onthe map when she needed anelectoral scapegoat. I wonder ifDisqus allows for "invitation only"commenting.

Because Takimag's usual trollhounds, especially the vicious rather thanmerely pathetic ones, have very highself-esteem, they are generally proudof how awful they have been andpositively swagger with satisfactionat their own competence in thematter of causing misery. Central totheir self-flattery is the delusionalbelief that reciprocal upvoting makesthem lovable as well as admirable. 4△ ▽
