Robert Raikes was concerned with theplight of the poor. He recognisededucation as the means to escape so, hebegan a school for the poor with a focu

primarily on teaching reading, writing an manners; but catechetical instruction,reading the Bible and attendance atchurch were regarded as central from thoutset. These Sunday schools wereestablished more for the benefit of thoschildren of parents who did not attend

church or chapel than for the benefit ofthose children who were brought up inpractising families. Raikes started his firstschool in 1780; by 1831 one and aquarter million children in the UK werebeing educated in this way.
