FROM THE PASTOR:Good Morning! Welcome to our Centennial Celebration. We, the peopleof Shiloh United Methodist Church, observe this historic event with asense of humility, reverence, and responsibility; for we are awarethat it has been the blood, sweat, tears, joy, and sucess of our fore-bearers that has paved the way for our celebration on this day.

From the first pastor in the year 1880 until the present day, eachhas blended his own special talents to those of the dedicated laity inthe building of our Fatheris kingdom.

Shiloh Methodist Church had a very humble beginning--a one room woodstructure with a handful of charter members. Today Shiloh has a mem-bership of two hundred and eighty three. The present modern structure,~hich is located on the site of the origjnal church, bespeaks the love, loyalty, and dedication of the fine lay persons which are a part ofthat long line of splendor.

We are greatful tothese many years.Shiloh Church intotry throughout the

almighty God for His guidance and strength throughOur prayer is that the same spirit that broughteXistance, will continue to express itself in minis-years to come.

May God;s richest blessings be yours.

v!ir s,'cerely yours,:"'~

In the passage of a hundred years a few men stand tall because t.."teystepped forth to meet the needs of their time. Shiloh h~s her list andin our day ~e especially remember a beloved superintendent~ Mr. JimmyGrant. This courtly gentleman arrived at the church early to make thefire ~Q the sanctua~ would be comfortable when the small congregationmet. to worship. Then he swept the floor. although this might have beenconsidered "t;i woman'sii work in his time. During the depression ye!!1rs1>lhenthe members could not meet their conference obligations, Mr. Jim'\l'l~rpaid the difference from his own pocket. In our hearts we p~ homageto him and the service he rendered.

Not only did Mr. William Grant furnish the land for the Shiloh Ch~l:J'~:i1at a give-a'lrlayprice, it fell his lot to provide hospitality for visiti."'l.gministers. Often the cooking was done out of doors. So it w~s on a par-ticuh.~ morning. The breakfas. ,jasprepared and waiting for the .fan:ilyand ministers to arise from their knees after prayer. Alas, disaster!~~ile all eyes were closed, a chicken had eaten the hoe cake.

The serpent brought temptation into the Garden of Eden; and likewiseinto the sanctuary of the Shiloh Church during the rendering of theEaster Ct:J.ntata.The lights were :"cused on the choir arranged acrossthe pulpit, their voices raised in song. Mrs. Brown, the pastorVs wifeand pianist, was giving full attention to her performance on the in-~trument. But top billing must go to the snake which entered a windowin the back of the pulpit and s~:.."<::'heredalong the floor. The eyes ofthe spectators were focused on this villain. Mr. Grady Roughton arosefrom the audience, grasped the snake by the head with his bare hand andretu~ned him into the night. Many cantatas have been a part of Shiloh'shi3tOry but only one had a snake to participate.

SHILOH UNITED METHODIST CHURCHHISTORICAL CANTATA

'lONEHUNDRED YEARS OF METHODISM"st. John 1:1-6 "In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with Godand the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All thingswere made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. Inhim was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth indarkness; and the darkness comprehendeth it not. There was a man sentfrom God--_v,

It is to some beginnings and to some of those men-sent from God who strength-ened and continued the beginnings-that we turn our thoughts today.Song No. 1 - Page A of SongsOf major importance is William Grant. Let us pause to honor his memory. In1880, from his land holdings, he presented the site for Shiloh Church. Thisdeed was recorded May 3, 1880 in the names of J.A. Squire, J.W. Grant, andN. Grant. The trustees paid him one dollar for this transaction.Song No. 2 - Page AIt was this same Rev. William Grant who delivered the first sermon in thechurch.Song No. 3 Page ALet us bear in mind on this day of memories that a church is not a build-ing but a community of faith with the commission from Christ to go intoall the world to preach the gospel and to baptize in his name. Sometimeswe set our sights too far. We fail to see the need that is close at hand.In 1893, when Shiloh had just become a teenager, her pastor, the Rev. J.~Tillery began preaching services in a tobacco barn in what is now RoanokeRapids. God blessed his efforts and today First Methodist on RonokeAvenue is the result.Song No. 4 Page BGrowth requires organization and labor. From the beginning, the SundaySchool has been a co-labor with the church. We honor her superintendentsand her teachers. On March 6, 1945 cards went out from Re. J.E. Garlingtonto the women inviting them to attend an organizational meeting of the Wo-mangs Society of Christian Service on March 13 at 7:30. Under Rev. Steph-enson the Junior Youth Fellowship was organized. No doubt there wereearlier organizations but tHe work ljasbeen oontinu0us since those timeswith maybe a small lapse. The youth have made many contributions to thechurch including the Bible on the pulpit and hearing aids on the back ofthe first pews for the use of those with impaired hearing. Visits to shut-ins and caroling have made their ministry very meaningful, both to them-selves and the history of our church.Song No. 5 Page BWe hallow the memory of all who have passed this way and whose services tothis church have ended in order to assume their place in Heaven. We makespecial mention of Ralph Baird, a layman, and Rev. Stephenson who sent totheir reward within the year 1963-64 while serving Shiloh Church.

Song No. 6 Page CIn 1925 the original Shiloh was remodeled. In 1950 a parsonage was builtand in 1953 a fellowship Hall. These last two are still in use today.Plans were being made for a new sanctuary when a fire in December 1971necessitated a new building. Volunteers from the membership moved the ol~building to the side to make room for the new structure. The old churchcontinued to be used. To say the least~ ventilation was adequate for theworshipers during the months of construction. Insurance~ Duke Endowment~The United Methodist Conference~ The Ten Dollar Club and friends of thechurch made it possible for the ne» work to go speedily forward.Dr. Nicholar Grant, the great grandson of the founder of the originalShiloh9preached the first sermon in our new sanctuary on December 2, 1973.In 1976 the church was dedicated and the mortgage was burned.Song No. 7In 1967 a new approach was engendered for the youth of the church: BobbyColston and Danny Copeland initiated Shiloh unto the Chruch Softball League. The team first played in yellow jerseys, then in blue jerseys with ShilQhprinted across the front. New9 complete uniforms contributed by friendscreated a problem at first: the players were afraid they would soil the~Many trophies testify to their good performance in the league but there ~no measuring stick by which to judge the value of being a part of the teamin Christian athletics.Song No. 8 Page DToday, we too join the team of Christians vJhohave lived the history ofShiloh Cbur.ch. Through her doors walked Dr. Nicholas Grant, Danny Allen,John Wood and Saunders Claiborne to be ministers of the gospel. In ourhands is the responsibility to carry on the mission of our church as co-workers with God.Song No. 9

(TUNE: LOVE LIFTED ME)

Through the Sunday School we learnStories of the past,Bible leaders, brave and bold,A foundation cast. And upon the path they madeWe may in earnest trod,For this straight and narrow wayLeads up to God.

They paved the way, they paved the way,A highway that leads to God, They paved the way. They paved the way, they paved the wayThrough the wilderness of doubtThey paved the way!

(TUNE: THERE'S A WIDENESS)

Those who gave their life in serviceHave received their just rewardFor their hours of consecrationTo the kingdom of our Lord.Let us pause to bive them honor:Ralph 9 the faithful layman 9 he;Reverend Stepheson9 the pastor; Now they rest eternally.

And all members who have labored7

Shared their laughter and their tears9

Hand in hand with God9s own mercyOvercame weakness and fears. For their courage we have prosperedOnly forward we must go.And throw out the blessed bannerThat our heritage may grow.

(7)(TUNE: JESUS CALLS US)

Jesus called us to be buildersOf a church without decay;Bring to Him our tithes and talentsOn His altar, them to lay.

Duke endowment and the ConferenceRallied swiftly to our aid.And through consecrated givingAll indebtedness was paid.

But let everyone rememberOur beginning was with God.To His hands we yield our futureIn his love we daily trust.May we live within His judgementFor we know that He is just.
