TIMELINE OF INDIAN CINEMAThis ppt marks the centennial of Indian cinema.

From the monochrome pixels of Phalke’s Raja Harishchandra to the sleek montages of Bombay Talkies (a tribute to Indian cinema), celluloid in this country has had an eventful journey. Selecting memorable moments from these 100 years is akin to picking favourites from Sachin's 100 hundreds—it's a tough ask and quite a contentious task. Nevertheless, we’ve compiled a list of milestones that went on to advance cinema in India.

1913-19231913: Raja Harishchandra, India’s first full length

feature film, is released at Coronation Cinematograph, Girgaum, Bombay. Interestingly the heroine in the film was not a female but a young boy called Salunke, who acted as Taramati.

1918: Birth of censorship, with the Cinematograph Act being passed.

1919: In Bengal, six years after 'Raja Harishchandra', Madan Theatre Company released its first silent film 'Billwamangal' in November.

1921: The first love story was made by DhirenGanguly called 'BiletFerot'.

1923-19331926: Fatima Begam becomes first female

producer / director with BulBulParasthan.1931: AlamAra, India’s first talkie directed by

Ardeshir Irani, is released; ‘De du khudakenaam Par’, sung by Wazir Mohammed Khan, becomes the first Indian film song.

Kapal Kundala (Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Bengali novel) is the first literary adaptation in Indian cinema. The film is directed by PremankurAtorthy.

1933-19431935 :Playback singing makes its appearance

with DhoopChhaon.1937 :First colour film by ArdeshirIrani called

KisanKanya.1941 :The Court Dancer gets the honour as

its credits claim it was “the first Indian film with dialogue in English to be entirely produced in India with all-Indian personnel”.

1943-19531946 :Neecha Nagar by ChetanAnand awarded the

Grand Prix du Festival International du Film (Best Film) award at the first Cannes Film Festival.

1949 :Films Division is set up in Bombay. 1951 :The Central Board of Film Censors was

formed. Film Federation of India was also launched the same.

1953 :DoBighaZameen directed by Bimal Roy was released. The film starred BalrajSahni in the lead role. It was the first film to win Filmare Best Film award. 

1953-19631955 :Satyajit Ray’s classic PatherPanchali released. Not only did the

film win National Film Award for Best Film that year, but also the Best Human Documentary award at the 9th Cannes film festival. 

1957 :Mehboob Khan’s epic film Mother India released. The film was India's first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958 and was chosen as one of the five nominations for the category.

1959 :First Indian cinemascope film, Guru Dutt’sKaagazKePhool, is released.

1960: K Asif historical epic drama Mughal-e-Azam releases. Mughal-e-Azam is the most expensive film made. It becomes the first to earn more than Rs 5 crore (Rs 39 crore in current value) at the box office. Starring the then lovers Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, the film took twelve long years to complete. 

1961: Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anuradha gets nominated for the Golden Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival. 

1963-19731964: Satyajit Ray wins the Best Director

award at the Berlin Film Festival for his film Charulata. 

1969: Rajesh Khanna starrer Aradhana releases. The film went on to become a cult film making Rajesh Khanna an overnight superstar.

1969 :The Dadasaheb Phalke Awards are instituted.

1973-19831975 :Release of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay; declared

‘film of the millennium’ by BBC India in 1999. It entered the Guinness Book of World Records for its five-year run at the box office. It is the only film which has enjoyed 60 golden jubilees.

The year also saw the rise of Amitabh Bachchan as the angry young man as he starred in Yash Chopra’s cult film ‘Deewar’.

1982: Fashion Designer Bhanu Athaiya becomes the first Indian to win an Oscar for the film Gandhi, by winning the Best Costume Design award. 

1983-19931984 :India’s first 3D movie, My Dear

Kuttichaathan (Malayalam), is released. It was dubbed in Hindi as Chhota Chetan in 1998.

1987: India’s first sci-fi film Shekhar Kapoor’s Mr India releases. Gives the country its favourite villain, Mogambo (actor Amrish Puri played the role) 

1987: Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak releases. A new chocolate boy called Aamir Khan sweeps the nation with his charm. 

1989: Salman Khan becomes an overnight success as Prem in Maine Pyar Kiya

1993-20031992: Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement awarded to Satyajit

Ray 1993 :ShahRukh Khan plays a psycho lover to JuhiChawla in Yash

Chopra’s Darr. The film catapults SRK to big league. 1994: Hum Aapke Hai Kaun releases 1995: Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut DilwaleDulhania Le Jayenge

breaks all records and goes on to become of an all time blockbuster. It becomes the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema. The film is still running at Maratha Mandir in Mumbai.

1997 :PVR Anupam in Saket, Delhi, becomes the first modern-day multiplex.

2001: Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan gets nominated for an Oscar but does not win.

2002 :Nil Nirjane (Bengali), directed by SubrataSen, is the country’s first digital film.

2003-20132004: Dhoom became the first action movie packed

with Hollywood-like stunts.2007: Foreign direct investments steps foot in

Indian film-making, with Sony Pictures Entertainment and SLB Films producing Saawariya.

2008: Ghajini crosses the Rs 100-crore mark in earnings; begins the ‘100-crore club’.

2009: 3 Idiots becomes the highest grossing Indian film ever, with Rs 300 crore.

2010: Ishqiya catapults Vidya Balan to the league of the most powerful Bollywood artists.
