Usually, clack bars indicate that you're abl e to see the WHOLE movi e (similar to how it was shown in a movie theater). Let us explain: The size of televi sion is almost similar to a square (1.33:1). Meanwhile, most movies shown in the theate r are similar to a rectangle (1.85:1 or 3.35:1). There fore, in order to show the movie on television, companies may cut-off the sides of the film which results in showing less of the actual film. When the movie is cut-off on the sides (formatted to fit your TV), they call it "Standard". When the entire movie is displayed on your TV (usually result ing in black bars at the top and bottom), it is called "Widescreen".

When I rent a movie, why do
I get black bars on the top
and bottom of my TV ?
Usually, clack bars indicate
that you're able to see the
WHOLE movie (similar to how
it was shown in a movie
theater).
Let us explain: The size of
television is almost similar to a
square (1.33:1). Meanwhile,
most movies shown in the
theater are similar to a
rectangle (1.85:1 or 3.35:1).
Therefore, in order to show the
movie on television, companies
may cut-off the sides of the
