Primers and Undercoats Farrow & Ball primers and undercoats have been specially formulated using the same natural ingredients and rich pigments as our topcoats. For best results and to achieve a perfect, even finish when decorating outside, use the appropriate primer and undercoat.

Exterior Wood Primer & Undercoat

This undercoat provides a protective, flexible and breathable foundation to exterior woodwork when using Exterior Eggshell or Full Gloss paints. Available in four colours.

Metal Primer & Undercoat

This rust inhibiting primer is suitable for use on bare ferrous metal surfaces when using Full Gloss or Exterior Eggshell. It can be used on gates, railings, garden furniture and metal downpipes and is available in four colours.

Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer

This clear primer provides a strong foundation when using Exterior Masonry paint, giving a longer lasting finish. It can be used on masonry surfaces which are porous, chalky or slightly degraded but otherwise structurally sound.

Wood Knot & Resin Blocking Primer

Specially created for use on woodwork when using Full Gloss or Exterior Eggshell, this primer blocks resinous stains on bare hardwood, softwood and knotty areas.

Choosing Colour

You can create fabulous schemes outside your home and in the garden with Farrow & Ball colours.

When it comes to choosing colour, there are no rights or wrongs, but do think about some of these factors:

• The aspect of your property and surrounding area.

• Consider the period of your property and the style and colour of neighbouring buildings; in particular, whether you wish to create a complementary or contrasting scheme.

• Look for dominant features like brickwork, natural wood and expanses of other colours such as paved or gravelled areas, lawns, fencing, shrubs and even flowers – all of which can affect colour choice.

But most importantly, pick a palette that feels right for you.

Decorating Ideas

• When decorating outside, you can usually go a shade or two darker than you would inside because you mostly see exterior colours in daylight. If you are considering using Slipper Satin try Off-White, or Pigeon instead of French Gray.

• To create a flow between the interior of your home and the exterior, use the same colour outside on a garden wall or a piece of furniture to help connect the two spaces together.

• To make a feature of your entrance, paint your front door and frame in one colour to help make it look bigger and more imposing.

• Consider paint finish as well as colour for your front door; Exterior Eggshell creates a relaxed feel in softer colours and a more contemporary look in stronger colours. Full Gloss gives a classic look and is especially effective in stronger colours such as Hague Blue, Black Blue or Railings.

• Layer colours outside just as you would inside to create added interest. Try using a mixture of colours on garden furniture such as Mizzle on chairs, with a table top painted in Old White and table legs in Mouse’s Back.

Adding colour to your garden

Exterior decorating can be fun too!

Whatever size your space is you can add colour in a garden in simple ways – try painting a bench, planters, window boxes, pots or even a birdhouse to create a focal point.

Colour can also be used to emphasise a feature in a garden – paint a summerhouse or wall in a bold colour to create a stunning backdrop to plants and foliage.

Tools: Pelt®, Drawing Room Blue® and Studio Green® Full Gloss. Birdhouse: Blue Gray and Chappell Green® Exterior Eggshell. Pots: Top Group: Calluna, Churlish Green, Dix Blue®, Brassica, Left Group: Oval Room Blue®, Mizzle®, Oxford Stone, Right Group: White Tie®, Blackened®, Vert De Terre®, Strong White® all Exterior Masonry.

Painting tips

• Avoid painting outside in extreme temperatures and don’t apply paint if there is a likelihood of rain!

• Exterior paint is best applied early in the day to allow drying before evening condensation. Lighting conditions tend to be best in the morning too.

• Always prepare the surface well before painting - surfaces should be clean and dry.
