General Information

You will be completing all aspects of the project no matter how many 10th grade classes you have. The only exception is if you do not have Geometry,

you do not need to complete the geometry part. Your final project will be a website using

Weebly. We will be giving you your login information and

having a live class to explain Weebly the week after testing (4/29-5/2).

Geometry

You will design multi-purpose greenhouse to live on Mars.

The greenhouse needs to include at least one prism, one cylinder, one sphere somewhere in the design.

You will then decide what 5 things they will need to bring with them (food, water, clothing, supplies, etc) from Earth and design storage containers to hold those items.

Page 6: 10 th Grade Academy Project Mission: Mars!

Scales Level 2 Level 3MO.1 - applies geometric methods to solve design problems

• Create a blueprint or model (can be done in geogebra, sketchup, or Graph paper) of a greenhouse that is at least 600 square feet that has a lab, sleeping quarters, bathroom and kitchen area and post it on the website

• Provide a link to a document with the dimensions of greenhouse, and correctly find the total volume

• Include at least one of each of the following: prism, pyramid, cylinder, sphere inside blueprint of the greenhouse.

On the website, Students will justify their design/model is the most efficient use of material by showing they used the least amount of materials (surface area) to maximize volume.

MO.2 - applies concepts of density based on area and volume in modeling

On the website students will list 5 things they will need to bring with them from Earth and design storage containers to hold those items; they will need to give dimensions of the objects, find the volume

On the website, Students will show how they calculated the amount of items they will need to bring with them and then justify that each of their containers will hold that amount of items.

VO.1 - gives informal arguments for the formulas for the circumference of a circle, area of a circle, volume of a cylinder, pyramid, and cone and other two- and three-dimensional shape

Students will create a blueprint of greenhouse by creating a composite 3-D figure and determine the volume and surface area of the figure..

On the website, Students will justify the volume and surface area of the greenhouse by explaining how they found the volume and surface are of the composite figure.

VO.2 - Determines shapes of 2-dimensional cross sections of 3-dimensional objects

On the blueprint, Students will identify shapes of walls .

On the website, Students will describe how doorways and walls are cross sections of the 3-D greenhouse.

Page 7: 10 th Grade Academy Project Mission: Mars!

Biology

You will be creating a website to describe a greenhouse habitat on Mars.

Page 8: 10 th Grade Academy Project Mission: Mars!

Biology You will need to provide essentials

for your colony on Mars with limited resources

You must determine what living things and materials to bring from Earth to create a sustainable greenhouse

The greenhouse must be able to perform its functions and remain stable without any further materials from Earth

Page 9: 10 th Grade Academy Project Mission: Mars!

Biology

Factors to consider in your sustainable greenhouse:

Air quality Water availability Food Temperature Waste products Medical needs Energy needs

Page 10: 10 th Grade Academy Project Mission: Mars!

Scales Level 2 Level 3BD.1 - Compare the biodiversity of organisms in different types of ecosystems noting (e.g., rain forest, grassland, desert) noting the interdependencies and interrelationships among the organisms in these different ecosystems

Describe what types of organisms would survive on Mars; What type of environment does Mars look like;

Describe relationships between organisms that would be necessary to sustain life on mars. What types of organisms would you need to have in order to; describe the similarities/differences between mars and earth and note the independencies and interrelationships among the organisms in theses different ecosystems

EC.1 -Will explain the structure and function of ecosystems and relate how ecosystems change over time

Describe the changes that have taken place on Mars throughout History

How can you establish life in Mars given the conditions you have to work with

ME.1 - Can compare and contrast the ways that matter and energy are transferred in our solar system and on Earth

Describe different ways matter and energy are transferred in our solar system and in your habitat.

Describe methods that could be used to generate energy from available resources or those which are brought to Mars. Explain how limited amounts of matter could be conserved.

SI.1 - Will develop scientific habits of mind as they use the processes in inquiry to pose valid questions and to gather and analyze data

Explain how the scientific method would be used in designing your greenhouse habitat.

Describe each step of the design process including the materials needed, the set-up and maintainance of the greenhouse, and the types of emergency techniques that would be used.

ST.1 - Will explain that science and technology are interconnected and that using technology involves assessment of the benefits, risks and costs

Describe the types of technology and knowledge that would be necessary for a functional greenhouse on Mars.

Explain the materials and technology needed for the project. Include details about how technology would affect both the biotic and abiotic factors of the set up, and how it would be used in the maintenance.

US History Geography:

Explain the physical geography inside of your green house. (Examples: animals, water, air, land, population, urban, rural, climate, vegetation, settlement, environment, industry)

How does the geography affect the type of industries that will exist in your green house?

What are the environmental challenges?  4: Innovating 3: Applying 2: Developing 1: BeginningGeography I can do all of the level 3 skill

in a new or innovative way not presented in the course.

I can explain geography has changed in the United States.

I can define terms and identify geographic examples of change in the United States.

I can define terms such as Levittown, Sunbelt, Interstate Highway System, Suburbs, Urban, Rural, Wilderness, Centers of Industry, etc.

Page 12: 10 th Grade Academy Project Mission: Mars!

US History Industrialization:

Based on natural resources available, geography, man-power, technology, and machinery, what types of industry will your habitat have? (Keep in mind that you are traveling to space and can only bring so much at time with you to Mars.)

Consider the impact your industries have on the environment. How will the pollution produced (if any) impact the surrounding environment? What challenges arise as a result of pollution, and how will you meet them?

4: Innovating 3: Applying 2: Developing 1: BeginningIndustrialization I can do all of the level 3 skill

in a new or innovative way not presented in the course.

I can explain the effects of industrialization in the United States.

I can define terms and identify examples of industrialization in the United States.

I can define terms such as Industrialization, technology, assembly line, union, urbanization and regulation.

Page 13: 10 th Grade Academy Project Mission: Mars!

US History Economy:

What will your industries produce in your habitat to sustain life?

How will your industries produce these products? For whom are your industries producing for? (Your

habitat only? Exporting to Earth?) Who makes the economic decisions in your

habitat? (Centrally-planned? Market-based?)  4: Innovating 3: Applying 2: Developing 1: BeginningEconomy I can do all of the level 3 skill in

a new or innovative way not presented in the course.

I can answer and explain the three fundamental economic questions.

I can define terms and identify the fundamental economic questions.

I can define terms such as Economy, Market Economy, Command Economy, Mixed Economy, Products, Laissez-Faire, Labor Unions, Trade, Specialization, Standard of Living, Federal Reserve, etc.

General Information

You should begin working on the research and other parts of creating your project outside of weebly. Anything you create in word documents or on paper, you can then put into weebly when you have your account information.

There will be some formative assessments and Weebly checks before the final project is due.

We will be teaching classes on Weebly as well as refresher courses on research and citations in the English classes during the week of 4/29-5/2 (after OAAs). All students are welcome to attend live and archives to these

classes will be provided for all students, even if they do not have a 10th grade English course.

Continue to check the lessons each week in each of your classes for the schedule of live classes and formative assessments.
