In Situ - Page Park

I placed my A2 poster near the entrance of Page Park, Staple Hill.

I sat nearby to observe the reactions from the public. A handful people stopped to take a closer

look at the poster, some walked straight past.

I stopped Louise, 33 a local resident to ask her views on the poster.

“I like it, the yellow makes it stand out.”

“I wish my husband was here, he’s a designer he would love to help you.”

“If you were to change it, I would say more information, it already makes you want to read it

but there’s not much information on there”

Jean, age undisclosed, said “The colours appealed to me, and the size is a

good size”

Mikey, 20, said “I like it but it’s not telling me anything”

In Situ - Teewell Hill Bus stop

I moved my poster to the Teewell Hill bus stop on Broad Street and observed the reactions of the public.

This wasn’t a very successful position of the poster.

Only 1 member of the public passed the poster with a brief glance and no time to stop and talk to them.

In Situ -Staple Hill Library

I then moved my poster to the door of Staple Hill Library.

I spoke to the librarians, who were very interested in having the poster up. She

asked lots of questions, and took a copy for the display inside the library that she had

made to celebrate the 150 years of trading.

I stopped a couple of Staple Hill residents to ask their opinions.

Siobhan, 48, said“I like it, the colours are good. The 150 years

could be bigger, it looks more professional than other posters I’ve seen round here”

John, 60, said“Its quite 50’s looking, maybe it works as a

leaflet. It gets the attention with the colours but there’s no other information”

In Situ - Telephone box, Broad St.

Finally, I moved my poster further down Broad Street, towards the High Street where it is usually busiest.

I stopped the people I noticed looking at it to ask their opinions.

Barbara, 89, said:“It certainly caught my eye. I like it!”

Claire, 22, said:“I like the colours. Maybe the words need to be bigger, all of them, or the top bits and the 150 years definitely”

Will, 28, said:“This vintage thing is popular at the moment, but its fitting ‘cause 150 years ago things probably looked similar. I dunno.”

Official Poster

Throughout this project, I have been in touch with Terry Sheen, head of the Chamber of Trade.

When I returned to Staple Hill to put my poster up he was unavailable. By the time I got him on the

phone, someone else had designed a poster for the anniversary for free, so mine would not be being used. It is however included in the display in the

Library.

Changes

All the comments I got from the people I spoke to were telling me to change the size of the

information already included, whilst also maybe adding more information.

Obviously the brief was to create a folding poster, and although my poster, I think, works well folded, it

didn’t perhaps work very well as a poster.

So here are the changes I would make to the poster, keeping the leaflet side the same.
