not give up
comments on the web

There are...
8.7 Million comments on worpdress a day
510,000 comments posted on Facebook every 60 seconds
...And we shouldshut them down?
« The problem with comments is
spam »
they say...
People lie
People hide behind pseudos to insult others
People don’t know what they are talking about
Peoplearetrolls
Here are 10 (really) good things about
comments
1. Comments are democratic
Commenting is a way to express different points of view.
You find some comments too vehement? That means real debate is happening.
2. Comments are educationnal
If you were to say something completely wrong in a comment, would you prefer that the moderator shuts you down, or that someone explains the truth?
We prefer the truth.
3. Comments build communities
Some people think that interactions are only vertical: one person can say something to a website, and vice versa.
Nowadays, the World Wide Web doesn’t work this way: interactions work horizontally, among users. People organize themselves collectively, all around the world.People can have conversations and debate ON a website, and the website owner can participate, but it shouldn’t censor.
4. Comments bring traffic
Let’s face it, traffic is one of the top priority for website owners.
Comments increase the time spent per page, the number of pageviews, and this magical indicator that we call ‘engagement’.
5. Comments are helpful
Commenting is not necessarily stating a fact. It’s also asking questions, providing help and answers.
We shouldn’t forget it just because there are a bunch of trolls in the way.
6. Comments are healthy
Don’t you feel that there is something truly wrong about shutting down comments?
Not enabling people to react to contents on the web is like making a phonecall to someone and not let him/her talk. It’s just weird.
7. Comments bring love
Yes, positive comments exist. People don’t always go to the Internet to complain about things.
And yes, sometimes, website owners post fake “Thanks-it’s-awesome” comments to their own pages - but, come on, they are really easy to spot.
8. Comments are fun
Sometimes, the reply is funnier than the statement.
Why giving up all the fun?
9. Comments are natural
In Real Life, how would you react if someone put a hand on your mouth when you want to say something? On some websites, that’s what’s happening.
Either you can’t comment, or you’re a little too much « moderated ».
10. Comments can lead to something else
Once you put a lot of effort and time on building a community, you can leverage it in many ways, depending on whether you provide medias, catalogs or products.
A whole universe is opening up, don’t miss it!
Express yourself anywhere on the web using one magic button.
