1. Helvetica a timeless classic, designed in 1957 by the Swiss Max Miedinger with

Eduard Hoffmann. Its neutrality and varying weights allow it to fit almost anywhere. The

updated Helvetica Neue is very similar, and also a truly brilliant typeface.

2. DIN designed by the German Institute for Standardization in 1931, DIN is a

fantastic, modern typeface that is still in wide use today

3. Futura designed in 1936 by Paul Renner, the bold variation is quite probably my

favourite all-time font. It is a geometric, clean, modern font with lots of practical

applications.

4. Gill Sans a very British typeface designed in 1926 by Eric Gill. The light and bold

variations were designed at a later date, and subsequently are arguably not as good as

the main font

5. Univers a neutral typeface similar to Helvetica, designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1954

7. Akzidenz Grotesk outdating most sans-serifs, being designed in 1896 by the

Berthold Type Foundry, it became the inspiration for many typefaces afterwards

(notably Helvetica and Univers)
