A s we move into our second quarter for the year, we bid farewell to our previous General Manager, COL (Ret) Richard Loong and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. With eager anticipation, we
welcome our new GM, Mr Ernest Ng and look forward as he leads the club toward developing SCC into a premium club that we can all be proud of. The 2019 Singapore Golf Association’s Inter-Club League has a new format - a round robin match play event without handicap allowances. Read more about this in the Ladies’ Corner, and if you are up to the challenge, why not volunteer to join the SCC League. One of the challenges for most golfers is chipping near to the hole, when you are near the green. In this edition of the newsletter, we share an easy way to simplify your chip swing and bring down your scores. See you at the clubhouse. Cheers! Eric Goh (Editor)
IN & AROUND BY COL (RET) RICHARD LOONG
GM’s Message
D ear Members,
I hope everyone had a great time
catching up with friends and family
during the festive period. The year of the pig
kick-started with the Club’s signature event –
Fa Cai Golf. We are heartened to see members
enjoying themselves immensely amid rounds of
golf and the Yu-Sheng tossing ceremony.
Following Fa Cai Golf, we also had Members
Night with the engaging theme of “Around the
World”. Without further ado, let’s do a quick
recap!
Gold Medal 2018
For the Gold Medal game held on 26 January
2019, the overall winner for Men’s Division is
Mr Vince Wong Hee Jit and overall winner for
Ladies Division is Ms Megan Lim Kai En.
Congratulations to both and all winners of Gold
Medal 2018!
Fa Cai Golf 2019
Held on 16 February 2019, Fa Cai Golf 2019
received an overwhelming response with
fully-booked flights! Besides a wonderful game,
participants were greeted by a lion dance
performance at the clubhouse. They were then
treated to a sumptuous dinner, performance by
the “Monkey God” and entertainment from the
Melody Band. The event was topped by the
prize presentation for the winners and speech
from Club Chairman BG Dinesh Vasu Dash
wishing all a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
Members Night
This year’s Members Night, with the theme
“Around the World”, was fully subscribed with
148 participants in attendance. New members
enjoyed the “New Members Introduction” as
they were invited on stage for a Bollywood
dance. Everyone was treated to a delectable
international buffet spread featuring Thai,
Japanese, Indian, Western and local cuisine.
Along with fun-filled programmes, the highly
anticipated lucky draw segment added to the
fun. It was indeed a memorable experience for
everyone.
WiFi Upgrading
You may be aware that in March, the Club had
been carrying out WiFi upgrading works at
several areas, namely the Clubhouse, Cozy
Café, Driving Range, Gym, Playroom, Pool,
Golfers Terrace, Banquet Hall, KTV and Lobby.
We hope that the improved WiFi connection
will enhance your experience at the Club.
Staff Excellence Award (Jan to Mar 2019)
I am pleased to announce the winners for the
quarter of January to March 2019:
Vijay (Male Changing Room Attendant) and
Christy (Female Changing Room Attendant)
from Operations Department, Siti (Customer
Service Assistant), and the Golfing Department
(for a well-organised Lady Cohesive Golf).
Thank you for your nominations, compliments

and feedback. Your encouraging words will
certainly motivate our staff to do their best and
take pride in their work. Do keep your feedback
and compliments coming. We will be glad to
know how we can serve you better.
Conclusion
Looking forward to the next quarter, members
can join our SCC Open 2019 in July 2019. On
the social front, the Club will be organising the
family and swimming carnival during the June
holidays, so stay tuned for further updates.
Before I sign off, I would like to thank my fellow
members for the support given to me during my
short stay with the club. I deeply appreciate the
camaraderie and happy moments we have
shared through these few months. Let us
3
extend a warm welcome to Mr Ernest Ng who
will take over the reins as General Manager. I
believe the Club will continue to excel under
his leadership.
GREETINGS FROM NEW GM MR ERNEST NG
D ear Members of Sembawang Country
Club, Hello and good day to all.
I am Ernest Ng, the newly appointed
General Manager of Sembawang Country Club.
Thank you for having me on board as your
General Manager. Having been away for a few
years, it is indeed heartwarming to return to a
place close to my heart and more importantly,
meeting old friends and comrades who have
walked alongside me in my almost three
decades of career with the SAF.
Having come to the end of my first few weeks
as GM SCC, it has been all what I expected
and better. The team in SCC continues to
deliver good work to the club even as I am still
learning the ropes. I have been touched by the
professionalism and dedication of the staff, as
well as encouraged by the warm welcome and
support from our members, the management
team and our EXCO. These all point to a
coherent team wanting to make SCC better
than before – something my predecessors have
built and I thank them for it. I will continue the
good work.
A little about myself and how we can walk this
journey to make SCC a members’ club and a
destination for celebrations and fun.
WHO AM I? I’m Ernest. Happily married to
Siew Yean and we have four lovely children;
Natalie(23), Nigel(19) and a pair of twins
Nahilus(13) and Nantres(13). Previously, I was
a resource strategic planner with the Joint Plans
and Transformation Department for about a
decade. I then spent a couple of years with NTUC
Club as their Director, Organisation Strategy and
Development before becoming the Executive
Director of Resorts Concept Pte Ltd. Outside
work, I am largely a family man doing what a
family man does. I sometimes do groceries
shopping, jog, play golf and I always enjoy eating
good food. The golf course is a perfect working
place for me because I don’t play water sports nor
watch soccer games. My simple philosophy in life
- live life and don’t let life leave me. I also hope to
be able to make life better for those around me.
I want to be able to work with my team and
members of the club to focus on our deliverables
for the coming years. We can work together to
make the club even more welcoming than she
already is. Little things matter so we must work
together and not only keep up the service
excellence, but up the ante to be even better. To
my team, let us work together to serve our
members wholeheartedly, and create a club that
our members can be proud of.
Thank you to President, Chairman and EXCO for
trusting me with this appointment to help bring the
club forward, looking at the long-term strategy
and development of the club. It is my sincere wish
for my team to want to come to work feeling
passionate about the work we do and the people
we work with. I hope to see the team taking pride
in what we do but most importantly, have fun and
enjoy what we do. And for our members, a club

they can be proud of and a destination
of choice to celebrate different phases of
their life.
Last but not least, I have really enjoyed
my first few weeks at work: lots of
laughter, food and good conversations. I
look forward to meeting you and your
family (where possible) on a more
personal basis and getting to know you
even better. Thanks for making me feel
welcome. It will probably be my greatest
joy going to work each day knowing I
can make a difference to my team and
to the members of SCC.
CAPTAIN’S COLUMN BY ME7 TEH CHONG ANN
Hi SCC friends, March has
been an incredibly hot month
but I guess nobody’s
complaining since there are
lesser abandoned games due
to bad weather! We are glad
that everyone has enjoyed
themselves but with the heatwave expected to
continue, please remember to take some
precautions against the sun. Do make use of
the halfway houses and water coolers dotted
across the golf course to refresh and refuel.
Apply sun block liberally to protect yourself
against the UV rays as well. Judging from
Retro’s darker skin tone and extra wrinkles
recently, I can safely conclude that sun
damage is a real thing.
The heat has also brought several issues to
our attention. Firstly, we have seen an increase
in the amount of litter on the golf course. While
hydration is important, please help to keep
those aluminum cans and plastic wrappers in
the buggy until a rubbish bin is found. These
reflective things left on the course have been
known to create a lot of agony for our golfers.
I’m sure that everyone had the experience of
hitting a bad shot and thinking that you’ve lost
the ball, only to see something glistening in the
distance. That excitement and anticipation, but
alas! It was only a piece of plastic wrapper
carelessly left by a previous golfer. Let’s not
create such disappointment for anyone!
Secondly, we have also noticed an increase in
the number of unrepaired divots on the
fairways. As the “Green” Committee, we take
the well-being of our grass patches very
seriously (we also take our vegetables
seriously). Research has shown that grass
takes longer to grow under hot weather, so the
least all of us can do is to repair those divots,
whether or not they were caused by you, and
help our grass grow stronger. The next person
caught not repairing their divots “will be made
to apologise to the grass patch”, personally
enforced by our vice-captain.
On a lighter note, we are glad to announce
that the biennial Sembawang Country Club
Open will be held this coming July. The
theme for this year is Shanghai Night (夜上海),
and I’m sure you know very well how to dress
for the night. One thing is for sure, the
organising committee will be getting
wonderful goodie bags, door gifts, lucky draw,
and novelty prizes for all participants. And
these are adding to good fun and time well
spent with your beloved golf kakis! The
highlight of course, will be the hole-in-one
prizes. One-upping the old adage of “one
dollar three tries”, you will get four chances at
Hole 6, 8, 15, and 18. We have classified the
prize as TOP SECRET for now but rest
assured that Retro has guaranteed your
satisfaction if you manage to complete the
feat (rumour has it that Retro has personally
committed his car as the backup hole-in-one
prize if the winner deems the original prize
unsatisfactory). With such a good deal, be on
the lookout when registration is open.
Don’t say bojio!
Jio already… you better come hor!

LADIES’ CORNER BY LADY CAPTAIN ME5 EMILY LEE
Sembawang Ladies’ League Team 2019
T he 2019 SGA Inter-Club League (ICL) is a round-robin match play event without handicap
allowances that is open to all Local Golf Clubs (Members of SGA). Each Club is to field a
Team comprising 30 players (15 pairs) with 4 players in the “Premier” Division, 6 players
each in the “A”, “B”, “Senior” Divisions and 8 players in the “Ladies” Division. To win each leg,
each club needs at least 8 Pairs to win. This year, SGA took a bold step to do something different
for the Ladies Division where the 4 pairs of ladies will be competing with No Handicap Index
Restrictions, “aka LPGA” standard with 2 caveats laid down: (1) Maximum of 3 players age 21
and under is allowed per leg and (2) Minimum of 2 players age 50 and above (as of 1st January
2019) can be fielded per leg. You can imagine the level of “stress” (or rather gruesome or
excitement) the ladies league will face this season, which will stretch from April to August 2019.
The Ladies’ League Team is led by the Ladies’ Captain, Ms Emily Lee.
Ms Jessie Oh Ms Jean Oh Ms Megan Lim

LADIES’ CORNER BY LADY CAPTAIN ME5 EMILY LEE
I welcome our 4 new civilian members who joined Sembawang Country Club last year:
Ms Jessie Oh, Ms Gigi Lim, Ms Shannon Ng and Ms Angelica Au. All are not new to golf and
had been well known for their superb golf skills. Those who are lucky to have “challenges” with
them would have witnessed their prowess in the golf course “battle”.
The Ladies Division had performed well in the last ICL
season, with an average win per game of 2.07 pairs of 4
matches. We will continue to strive and do better for
every year to come. Many of us took part in the league
because we enjoyed the thrill of competition. We took
pride in the challenge to pit our skills against others to
see how far each of us can stretch. The challenge and
testing of oneself during a competition will release the
beasts in us, which will not be discovered in a social
setting. It is also about representing Sembawang
Country Club, to be good ambassadors forging closer
ties with the sister clubs and bring the camaraderie in friendship to a higher level. And that is
the true spirit of the ICL competition.
I would like to salute all the league players, past and
present, who had taken the courage to come forward
and sacrifice their precious time away from their family/
loved ones to participate in this “gruesome and
demanding” competition. Every year the competition
has its own unique examination and every level its own
different challenges. Every battle fought at every level
deserves appreciation no matter if one wins or loses.

LADIES’ CORNER BY LADY CAPTAIN ME5 EMILY LEE
The Ladies had been used as a “sacrificial lamb” to trial the new format for this season, for the
Men to adopt next year if proven successful. This new format will be very interesting and rather
challenging to strategize as each pair can anticipate to meet the Juniors, Evergreens, High/low
HI or any mix of the groups of players. The thrill and suspense will only be unravelled an hour
before the game. One thing for sure, our ladies team will train hard and play their best for SCC.
Let’s hear from some of them on their aspirations:
Lim Chin Yen – League is a platform to boost our golf to another level and with
this new format, I hope to have more ladies’ pairs to compete in future.
Tey Siew Choo – I am excited to join our ladies’ team with so many good
players. Looking forward to contribute whatever I can and learn from the
rest. Hopeful for us to achieve a better standing from previous years.
Ho Sim Sim – Previous stratification of handicap in Ladies’ division allowed
the Ladies’ of the same standard to compete together in the same division.
However, the merging of all ladies into one division this year makes the
format more challenging. A lot of luck is needed as you will never know
what is the standard of your opponent until the competition day.
Linda Kang – I feel honoured and privileged to be in the SCC
league team this year. Although the format is not favourable to
some ladies, I will take it in the right stride and train harder to play
my best for SCC.
Shannon Ng - I find the format interesting this year for the Ladies and
we should see some great “fights” along the way.

No-Chunk Chipping: Stand Closer to Simplify Your Swing
By Butch Harmon | Golf Digest
Photos by Don Furore
GOLF TIPS
the swing will be shorter, so less can go
wrong.
Try this routine: First, step in with your back
foot, directly across from the ball and about
10 inches from it. Then, aim the clubface at
your target. Finally, step in with your front
foot - that'll help settle your weight forward,
where it needs to be throughout the swing.
C hipping isn't complicated, but a lot
of golfers make it so. One issue I
see is that they stand too far from
the ball, like they're hitting an iron
shot (above). From there, the club swings
around the body on a circular arc - good for
the full swing but bad for chipping. That bigger
motion makes you slow the club down before
impact for fear of hitting the ball too far. You
wind up chunking it.
To simplify things, get closer to the ball with
the shaft more vertical. Feel like the clubhead
is up on its toe (next page). This sets up a
straighter swing path, with the clubface
always looking down the line you want to hit
the ball, not rotating open and closed. Plus,
15
HOW TO ADD FEEL
I use my putting grip when chipping because it gives me better feel - and little chips are
serious feel shots. It also gets me in a putting mind-set, feeling more "over the ball" and zoned
in on a target. All you're trying to do is get the ball over the grass in front of you and let it run
out. Why land it on the green instead of the fringe? The bounce is more predictable.

WHAT’S UP @ RECIPROCAL CLUBS
N ational Service Resort & Country Club
(NSRCC) will soon be introducing a
spectacular sight at its Changi location.
A brand new permanent Driving Range, along
with its myriad of facilities will be unveiled in the
third quarter of 2019.
Back in 2014, NSRCC Changi returned part of
its land to the State, downsizing itself from a 27-
hole to 18-hole golf course in which its former
Air Force 9-Hole Course and Executive Par-3
course had to close and cease operations. This
was to facilitate National Development on the
construction of the new Terminal 5 airport and
future expansion of Changi Coastal Road. The
remaining land at NSRCC saw a reconfiguration
of one of the 9-hole courses and the demolition
of the previous driving range to accommodate
the reconfiguration of the golf course.
During the interim, while continuing to allow its
members to have their privilege in having a
Driving Range, NSRCC had to work a way out
and best utilise the remaining land. Unlike other
conventional driving ranges, NSRCC’s new
driving range will be built atop of existing
facilities, and boasting of an impressive height
with panoramic views of the nearby sea at
Changi beach; assuredly the first in Singapore.
This mega project is not without its challenges.
The concept took many revisions before it
finally arrived at the final design. Issues
comprised technical feasibility, ball collection
system, user experience as well as the façade
of building had to be carefully planned and
executed throughout the various project
phases. Since the first quarter of 2018,
construction has been underway for this project,
and phased out over the span of 18-months to
ensure a smooth path to completion.
NSRCC’s new 5-storey Driving Range will
consist of three levels of tee-off bays located at
levels 2, 3 & 4 and comprising a total of 40
bays. The unique driving range will be elevated
five stories above ground, and with a range
distance of 200m long, golfers would be able to
practice their swing amidst the splendid view of
the club’s lush green courses as well.
Facilities such as a Pro-Shop, Club Fitting
Services, Golf Academy and a Rooftop F&B
New Driving Range @ NSRCC
17
Bistro Bar with stunning views of both the beach and lush green golf courses, will be added to
complement the driving range. Apart from NSRCC members, this new driving range will also
open its doors to the public, offering irresistible deals for them to practice their swing.
NSRCC is a golf and country club set up to
recognise the contributions of operationally
ready NSmen to Total Defence. NSmen
from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Police as
well as Civil Defence are welcomed to join
NSRCC. The new driving range is definitely
paving its way to become the pride of its
members, and the outcome sought is for
the club to be able to provide members with
an exhilarating and positive experience.
This would be in line with its vision and
mission in continuing to provide affordable
and premium services to the members and
NSmen, which is the heart of the matter.
