alwayswillingtoexperimentwithgameplay,visualsandstoryinwaysthatcapturetheimagination

anddrawyouintoitsvariousworlds.PerhapsthemostintriguingaspectofFinalFantasysimmense

successisthedivisionitinspireswithinitsownfanbase;everybodyhastheirownfavouritegame;

their own favourite character; their own favourite villain It doesntmatter howmany times

peopletryandclassifyoneaspectofonegameasthebest;otherswillalwaysbewillingtostep

upandfightthecorneroftheirfavourites.Thisallstemsfromthehighstandardofgameweexpect

fromaFinalFantasyreleaseanditsthesehighstandardsthathaveperhapsledtoaslightdiminish

withinthe

series.

Fantasy

XIVs

failed

launch

was

seen

by

many

as

the

first

major

blunder

withinthefranchise,thoughotherspinpointthebeginningoftheseriesdemiseasfarbackasFinal

FantasyVIII.Allofthatisirrelevantthough.EvenifSquareEnixreleaseadozenfailedMMOs,the

qualityandstandardoftheFinalFantasygamesleadinguptoitwillnotbediminished.Still,within

thesegames,thereareelementsthatareslightlyoffputtingtousasplayers.Withawidevariety

ofcharactersandstoryarcs,youdexpecttobemore interested incertaincharactersaheadof

others; thats simplyhuman nature. Interestingly though, some characters seem to be placed

withintheseriessimplytoannoyus.Whyelsewouldyouintroduceheroiccharacterswithwildly

inflated egos and aggravating personalities? This article seeks to highlight ten characterswho

challengeduswiththeirappearancesthroughouttheseries;characterswhoannoyedus,upsetus

oroffended

us

with

their

pointless

ways.

Whether

it

was

an

annoying

personality

or

habit

or

an

infuriatingsidequestwhichwastedourtime,thesetencharactersshouldbeashamed fortheir

Interestingly,FinalFantasyVIwascreatedwithnomainprotagonistinmind;itscharactersform

moreof

an

ensemble

than

any

other

Final

Fantasy

game.

As

such,

theres

arange

of

creative

characterswithmanyoptionalchoicesthatcanbemissedentirely(especiallywhenintheWorld

ofRuinwhererediscoveringcertaincharactersisoptional).Ofcourse,whenyoureintroducinga

widerangeofcharacters,notallofthemaregoingtobehits.Umaroisaremarkablystrangechoice

foraplayablecharacter,evenbyFinalFantasystandards.Hesaberserkeryetiwhodoesnttake

anycommandsfromtheplayer;hesimplyusesphysicalattacksandgenerallydoeswhateverhe

wants.Notexactlythesortofpartymemberyouwantaroundwhenthegoinggetstough.Even

strangeristhewayyourecruithimintotheparty.IntheWorldofRuin,Umaroisencounteredina

mineandafterabattle, ifMog is inyourparty, theMooglewillcommandUmaro tojoinyou;

apparentlyMog

knows

how

to

control

him.

Its

abizarre

partnership

to

say

the

least;

so

bizarre

in

factthatwhenheldupagainstthemorematurestorylinesinFinalFantasyVI,itkindoffallsapart.

TheresvariouswaystogetthemostoutofUmaro inbattlebutwith littlestoryandcharacter,

whenallissaidanddone,onequestionreallyremainsaboutUmarowhy?

Isitpossibletohaveaplayablecharacterwhowasplacedinagamejustforoneline?Edwardsfirst

appearanceinFinalFantasyIVseeshimbeinginsultinglyreferredtoasaspoonybardbyTellah.

Itsanexampleofthesillinessoftheseriesaswellassometerrificallypoortranslationthroughout

theyears,butitssomehowincrediblyapt;thereissomethingratherspoonyaboutEdward,after

all.AtleastpartofTellahsexclamationisrightanyway;Edwardisabard.Hesalsoaprincebuthis

loveformusicfaroutweighshisloveforpolitics.Hisstoryfeaturesanearlytragedywhenthelove

ofhis life,Anna, iskilledbyGolbez (whoalsostealsEdwardsairship forgoodmeasure)and it

doesntgetmuchbetterfromthatpoint.Hespendsalotoftimemopingabouthislostloveand

therestofthetimeactingcowardlyandveryunprincely.Healsoendsupbedriddenformostof

thegame(althoughhedoeshelpthepartyoutgreatlyfromthecomfortofhisbed),furthermaking

himlookweakanduseless.Inbattle,hisstatsareprettypoor(theyskyrocketafterLevel70butin

theoriginalSNESversion,yousimplyarentgoingtogethimthathigh)andhisabilities,mainlySing,

are fairly useless. He also uses Hide when his health is low, saving him from death while

simultaneouslymakinghimunusuable.Edwardmightnotbemuchofafighter(oracharacterin

general)butwellforeverrememberhimastheSpoonyone.

8. Squall Final Fantasy VIII)

Squallofferssomethingofadilemma;asthecentralcharacter,hes imperativetoFinalFantasy

VIIIsnarrativeyethis irritatingpersonalityandunsociablehabitsmeanthatitshardtorootfor

him.Hesacharacterthatdividesopiniononanincrediblescale;someviewhispersonalitytraits

asinhuman(andtherefore,highlyproblematic)whiletheresalsoanargumentthathiscynicaland

coldwaysmakehiman intriguing characterone thatwewant to seemoreof.Squalls stoic

personalityderivesfromanintensefeelingofloneliness;acombinationofhislifeasanorphanand

afeelingofabandonmentfromthegirlhelooksuptoashisoldersister.Whenthisstorylineactually

develops,itsaninterestinglookatourhero,givingusthechancetopeelbackhisrigidexterior

andseewhatliesbeneath.Sadly,itcomesverylateinthegameandforsome,thedamagemay

havepermanentlybeendone.Yousee,Squalldoesntseemtogetonverywellwithpeople.His

talents allow him a leadership rolewithin the SeeD organisation (specifically leading Zell and

SelphieontheirfirstassignmenttoTimber)buthisdismissiveattitudemakesyouwonderwhyhes

entrustedwiththisrole.Eventhosewhofollowhimmockhimforhispoutyways;QuistisandRinoa

bothpreemptivelycopyhimwithhiscatchphraseWhatever.Hesreallynottheworldsbiggest

badass.Yes,SquallsdevelopmentiscentraltoFinalFantasyVIIIandseeinghimfinallyopenupis

agenuinelyawesomemoment.Still,youcanseewhysomanyfeltthatthejourneytogetthere

simplywasntworthit.NotthatSquallreallycareswhatwethinkanyway.

7. Cait Sith Final Fantasy VII)

Youhavetobeespeciallyabnormaltobetheweirdestcharacterinagamefeaturingavampire,a

manwithagunforanarmandatalkinganimal.CaitSithisdefinitelyabnormalthough;hesagiant

stuffedanimalcontrolledbyaroboticcatwithamegaphone(whosactuallybeingcontrolledby

ReeveofShinrayouknow,thebadguys).UponjoiningthepartyintheGoldSaucer,CaitSithacts

asaspyforShinra.Cloudquicklysuspectsthatthegrouphasaspywithinitsmidstsbutdoesnt

seemtosuspectthenewguyatall.Lateron,hestealsakeyitemfromthegroup(thekeytothe

TempleOfTheAncients)andhandsittoShinra.Whencaught,herevealshistruecoloursbutthen

announceshesholdingBarretsdaughterhostage,forcingthegrouptokeephimaround.Itsfair

tosaythathesnotateamplayer.CaitSithsredemptionarrives intheTempleOfTheAncients

whenhesacrificeshimself toget theBlackMateria.However,mereminutes later,an identical

replacementshowsup,makingtheentiresacrificeordealirrelevant.Ontopofallofthis,inbattle,

hislimitbreakisentirelyrandomandhasachancetogiveyouanimmediateGameOverscreen;

CaitSithmightbethefirstcharacteryouveeverwantedtoliterallyknockthestuffingoutof.

6. Zell Final Fantasy VIII)

PerhapsitsintentionalthatnearlyeveryFinalFantasygamehasacharacterthatsbeenperfectly

designedtoannoyyouonaconstantbasis;howelsecanyouexplainZellsexasperatingroleinFinal

FantasyVIII? Zell isaneardisastrousmixofarrogance, stupidityand speech in capital letters,

meaning that when hes not annoying you by trying to fight everyone, hes saying or doing

somethingthatsboundtogetyourpartyintotrouble.Theresagreatexampleofthisduringthe

partysearlymissioninTimber.ThePresidentofGalbadia(whothegrouphavebeentaskedwith

kidnapping)ismakingaspeechontelevisionbutbeforethegroupcanputtheirplansintoaction,

Seiferstormsinandholdshimhostageinfrontofthenation.WhenyouarriveintheTVstudio,Zell

blurtsoutthatSeiferisfromGarden,despiteSquallsdesperateattemptstoshuthimup,directly

leadingtoGalbadiatakingmilitaryactionagainstthethreeGardens.Greatjob,Zell.ZellandSeifers

rivalry is actually a running plot thread through the early stages of Final Fantasy VIII and its

unbelievablysilly.Seifer likestocallZellachickenwusswhich,despitebeingoneoftheworst

insultsevercreated,getsunderZellsskinforsomereasonandusuallyleadstohimfiringupina

big,melodramaticfashion.Hedoesbringsomegoodqualitiestothetable(particularly inbattle

wherehislimitbreakseeshimperformingwrestlingmovesonfoes)butZellsannoyingqualities

willundeniablyhaveyoufacepalminglikeSquallonaconstantbasis.

5. Vaan/Penelo Final Fantasy XII)

Whenareyourmaincharactersnotactuallyyourmaincharacters?WhentheyreVaanandPenelo.

FinalFantasyXIIsmainstorydealswithAshesquesttoaccumulatepowerandregaincontrolof

herkingdomafteritsoverthrownbyabetrayal.VaanandPeneloaccompanyheronthisjourney,

actingasviewpointsonthevariousevents.Thisseemsstrangethough,giventhattheyrethefirst

charactersintroduced inthegame(asidefromthetutorialsectionwhichfeaturesVaanssoldier

brotherReks).Forthemajorityofthegame,youllbecontrollingVaan,yet inanarrativesense,

hesnotreallythemaincharacter.PerhapsSquarefeltthatAshestalewastoldbetterfromathird

personperspectivebutitalsounderminesVaanscharactersomewhat.Vaansmaindevelopments

centeraroundhisdesperatewanttoobtainanairshipandbecomeaskypirate.Lateron,headmits

that this isdrivenbyadesire to leavethememoryofhisbrotherbehind.Peneloservesashis

companionandthatslegitimatelyprettymuchit.Together,theylearnabouttheworldofIvalice

duringtheirtravelsbutbeyondthis,anystoryfocusedonthemascharactersisprettymuchnon

existent.VaanandPenelosproblemisntevenreallytodowiththemascharacters;itsmoretheir

frustratingrolewithinthestory.Theyregivenlittleopportunitytostandoutandbytheendofthe

game,theyreonlyslightlybetteroffthantheywerebefore.Plus,theresasectionofthegame

where youre required to run around as Vaan and yell Dont listen toOndores lies! in the

smuggestvoicepossibleyeah,thesetwodefinitelyneededmorework.

4. Quina Final Fantasy IX)

AfterthesemirealisticworldsofFinalFantasyVIIandVIII,Squaresdecisiontoreturntoitsmore

bizarrefantasyworldsinFinalFantasyIXallowedthemtobringtheirimaginativecreationstothe

foreonceagain.Howelsedoyouexplainthedecisiontocreateahumanoidleadcharacterwho

hasatailfornoreason?TheresplentyofweirdandwonderfulcharactersinFinalFantasyIXbut

nonecomeclosetothebizarreappearanceofQuinaQuen.ItsalmostimpossibletodescribeQuina

inwords,thoughthefirstthingtopointoutisthatQuinaisactuallygenderless(aprettyannoying

charactertraittowriteabout,asitturnsout).QuinaspeaksinbrokenEnglish,forcinghim/herinto

aJarJarBinksesquerolewithinthegame;notthebestroletobeplayinginanything,really.Quinas

definingcharacteristicisaloveforfoodwhichisprettymuchthecharacterssolepurposewithin

thegame.S/he initiallyjoinsyourpartyonhis/herownquest todiscovernew foodsand s/he

regularlydepartsthegroupwhilechasingdownfoods,convenientlyreturningwhen itstimefor

thegrouptomoveon.Annoyingly,this isprettymuchQuinasrolethroughouttheentiregame.

S/hellpopup inseveralActiveTimeEventsorwhenthegroupfirstentersanareaandusually

makeacommentaboutcuisinebeforedisappearing.Itsrepetitivetosaytheleast.Onapositive

note,Quinacanbequiteuseful inbattleass/heactsas theBlueMageof theparty inbattle,

learningenemyskillsbyeatingthem.Ofcourse,theproblemwithanyBlueMageclassisthatin

ordertomaximisetheirusefulness,youhavetospendtimetrackingdowneveryskillforthem.If

yourefullyinvestedinFinalFantasyIXandlookingforasmuchadventureaspossible,thatsfine.

Otherssimply

wont

bother

and

Quina

simply

wont

match

up

to

other

party

members.

If

Quina

hadsomeactualstory(andagender),s/hemighthavebeenadecentcharacterinFinalFantasyIX,

despitehis/herbrokenEnglishandannoyinghabits.Sadly,s/hesrelegatedtosimplecomicrelief

andlikeJarJarBinks,halfthetime,itsimplyisntfunnyenough.

3. Tidus Final Fantasy X)

Itshardbeingstuckinyourwaysandthensuddenlyfindingyourselfcompletelyoutofyourdepth

inawholenewworld.Well,at least,thatswhatTidusstoryinFinalFantasyXtellsus.TheStar

PlayerOfTheZanarkandAbesistransportedtoSpirawhenSindestroyshishomeofZanarkand

andhefindshimselflostinaworldwhichisalmostcompletelydifferent.Youreallyhavetofeelfor

theguy.Ornot.MaincharactershavedividedopinionintheFinalFantasyseriesbefore,butTidus

iseasilythemostconflictcausingprotagonistofall.Hisnaivetyandignorancemeansthathesa

prettygoodcharactertocontrolaswe,theplayer,learnaboutSpiraourselves,thoughthiscauses

alotofawkwardsituationsthatjustmakeourherolookstupid.Akeyexampleisearlyinthegame,

whenWakkawarnshimagainsttellingpeoplehesfromZanarkand(inSpira,itsregardedasaholy

place.Plus,itsbeendestroyedforathousandyears).Despitethis,Tidusproceedstotelleverybody

thatlllistenthathesTheStarPlayerOfTheZanarkandAbes,completelydisregardingWakkaswise

warnings.Whilethisneveractuallycausesanyconflictwithinthegame(well,hedoesgetbranded

aheathenbyanoldwoman),ithardlypaintsTidusasthesortofintelligent,heroicfigurewewant

tobeplayingas.

2. Hope Final Fantasy XIII)

ItsfairtosaythatthereareveryfewredeemingfactorsinFinalFantasyXIIIssixmaincharacters.

Lightning,Sazh,SnowandFangcanbestbedescribedasalrightandVanille isoneoftheseries

mostdivisivecharacters.Still,nonehavedrawnasmuchhostilityasHopeandforgoodreason.A

lotofHopesproblemsstemfrombiggerproblemswithFinalFantasyXIIIscharactersingeneral.

Were given littlemotivation to care about their plight or themselves as characters and they

developveryslowlyduetoalackofinteractionthroughoutthegame.Infact,thegroupissplitfor

thevastmajorityofthegame,preventingusfromseeingthevariousdynamicsofthepartyatwork.

Perhapsworstofallthough,thisallservestohighlightHopeasthegamesmostirritatingcharacter.

Hismothersextremelyunsurprisingdeathearlyon inthegame isclearly intendedtoattachus

emotionallytothecharacter,yetitfallsflatasheproceedstoblameeverybodybutactualkillersfor

herdeath,drivingawedgebetweenhimselfandthegroup(especiallySnow)fornexttonoreason.

Heconstantlymoansaboutthegroupssituation,ratherthanembracingitandyouconstantlyget

thefeelingthathesimplywantstocurlupinaballandgiveup;hardlythemostheroicofactions.

Thankfully,Hope is redeemed slightlywithhisappearances inXIII2 and LightningReturns (or

FFXIII3)wherehesfarmorematurewithhishighintellecthelpingyouthroughoutthetwosequels.

Sadly, in Final Fantasy XIII, theres little of that on show. Again, Final Fantasy XIII wont be

remembered fondly for itscharactersbutHopesconstant lackofhope (intentional irony?)will

haveyourollingyoureyeseverytimehesonscreen.Asahero,Tidusdevelopslateoninthegame,

especiallydue

to

his

love

story

with

Yuna

becoming

more

central

to

the

plot.

Sadly,

to

get

to

that

point,wehavetoendurehisirritatinglycockyattitude,hisinabilitytolearnbasicmannersanda

laughsceneinLucawhichhaslivedininfamyforbeingoneoftheworstscenesintheentireseries.

Plus,hefitsintothedumbblondestereotypeperfectly;timetobuckupyourideas,Tidus.

Optionalcharactershaveittoughintheworldofroleplayinggames.Duetotheiroptionalstatus,

theyveryrarelyget involved inmajorploteventsandtheirownstorylinesmaybesignificantly

worsethanothersinthegame.YuffiemaybeanoptionalacquisitioninFinalFantasyVIIandthats

perhapsforthebest;ifyouknewthetroubleshewasgoingtocauseyou,inhindsight,youmight

haveturnedheraway.Yuffiefirstappearsasarandomencounterontheworldmap inaforest

region (the earliest possible location isjust outside JunonHarbour).After battling her, youre

transportedtoanopenfieldwhereyouhavetopickthecorrectresponsestoherquestionsinorder

togethertojoinyou.Ifyousomuchasopenamenuortrytosaveatthenearbysavepoint,she

willrobyouandleave;apparentlyshehaslittleworriesaboutmakingagoodfirstimpression.If

youhaveYuffieintheparty,shellmakeafewhumorousappearancesthroughout(suchaswhen

shegetsajobataMateriastoreparttime,onlytorobthemwhen leavingwiththeparty)with

littletooffend.YuffiecomestotheforewhenthepartyarrivesinherhomenationofWutai.Here,

sheleavesthepartytemporarily,takingthegroupsMateriastashwithher.Thisleadstooneofthe

gamesmostfrustratingsegments;withnoMateria(andthereforenomagic),thefightsinWutai

becomemuchtougheranditsimpossibletoleavewithoutfinishingthestoryline,whichinvolves

chasingYuffieallovertheplace.Great.Forthemajorityofthegame,Yuffieisaninoffensiveyet

unimportantcharacter.Sheappearsinseveralscenesandhassomefunnylinesbutapartfromthat,

shedoesntdoalot(shedoesntevenappearinthegamesclosingFMV).HerstorylineinWutaiis

achore

though

and

while

its

optional,

youll

undoubtedly

find

yourself

stumbling

upon

it

during

yoursearchfortheTempleOfTheAncients.Here,Yuffiesannoyingqualitiescometolightandits

hardforhertoregainourtrustafterputtingusthroughsuchagrueling,testingtime.
