The 10 Commandments were delivered to Moses on two stone tables at the top of Mt. Sinai

1. You shall not have other Gods beside me

• We are called to love God above everything else (money, power, design, etc.)

• God alone should have the first place in our hearts and lives, displacing all other idols. (idol is anything that takes first place in our life and affections)

• We are not required to forsake wordily good, but to make God the most important

• We are asked to base our daily actions on the love of God

2. You shall not take God’s name in vain• We are asked not to use God’s

name loosely• Instead use God’s name

positively in prayer and speak proudly of your faith in conversation with other.

3. Keep the holy the Sabbath Day• This commandment calls to

take time for God, that includes going to Church

• ‘keeping holy’ can mean hanging out with your friends or catching a movie, but it must mean doing good for yourself so that God is honoured by your choices,

• it calls us to carry thoughts of God into weekday so that God is part of every day

4. Honour your father and mother• This commandment is not just for children and

their parents, it called to us to respect whole and extended family, people in community and people with authority (eg. Teachers, police, etc.)

• honour and respect must be shown by both parents and children while building relationship

• both parents and children need to cooperate to build the love and respect

5. Shall not kill• This commandment bans any

physical killing, as well as, abortion, euthanasia, nuclear war, capital punishment, racism, sexism, agism.

• Making people feel bad about themselves (eg. make-calling, bulling, etc.) leads to actions that kills the spirit of others

• This commandments also applies to the environment, whenever we pollute or waste we contribute to the enviornment’s demise

6. You shall not commit adultery• This commandments is not just reserved for couples in

relationship, it applies to all whether married or single • It call us to be honest, faithful and loyal in all our

relationships, whether the same or opposite sex is involved.

• We need to be faithful/honest in your relationship with your friends, family or boyfriend

7. You shall no steal• We are not to steal from our

potential to excel, when we cheat or fail ourselves by not doing our best we are stealing form ourselves and our future

• We are not to steal from the future generations, we must preserve the air, land, water and natural resources so our children or grandchildren can live in clean environment

• Stealing include: breaking a contract, paying poor wages, refusing to share you talents/possessions, buying stolen goods, wasting a lot

8. Do not bear false witness against your neighbour

• This commandments calls us to know that truthfulness it good

• It calls us to be true to our beliefs or faith, eg. our love for Jesus/God, and to live a truthful life that reflects that belief

• Violations include: lying, gossiping, being silence in response to sinful act that you did, spreading rumours, judging someone by unproven rumours

9. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife

• The definition for coveting is: to wish for, eagerly desire, to envy

• This commandment does not ban sexual thoughts, as long as one does not cross the line into sin

• This commandments calls us not to envy the talents, love, successes, power of other, instead to work to develop our own

10. You shall not covet your neighbour’s goods

• Another way of translating this commandment is to, “Be satisfied with what our generous God has given us!

• It calls us not to envy the properties, talents, power of others, but to work to develop our own talents given by God

• This commandment calls us to take actions that lead toward social justice, actions that promote others to get what they need such as, a place to live or have warm meals if homeless
