Twenty First Sunday After Pentecost
October 21, 2012

Community Life: After the Service Each week, we linger for fellowship with one another. Please join us for refreshments in the cafeteria.
Community Groups In addition to weekly worship, we offer small groups (community groups, men’s and women’s bible studies, book studies) that meet throughout the week. We want all of our members and regular attenders to be intentional about building trusting and meaningful spiritual relationships. For a complete list of our small groups, please visit our Web site at www.cityviewchicago.org or fill out one of our “connection cards” for more information.
Welcome to Cityview Presbyterian Church
To Our Guests: Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview.
Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.
The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.
If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards next to each row: we call those our “Connection Cards”. Connection Cards are a way for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is available to answer questions, as well.
For Children: Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.
Nursery is provided during the service for children 2 years of age and younger.
Children ages three through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the greeting portion of the service.
If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Hilary Clark ([email protected]).

The Liturgy
Preparing in Stillness We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we often are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read these reflections, look over the rest of the service, or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.
Call to Worship We need to be “called” to come and worship God be-cause we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.
Confession of Sin Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.
Assurance of Grace Christ has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his Name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.
Worship Through Giving Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.
The Sermon Some view the Sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.
Communion Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.
The Benediction God always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIP
“Your sense of weakness, of your unworthiness, of your fearfulness, is no proof against you, but rather for you. The sense of all this is permitted to manifest the greatness of Christ’s condescension - and to fill you with gratitude towards him for loving one so sinful as you are. Your doubts may rob you of your comfort - but they shall not deprive you of your title to Heaven. Your fears may distress you - but they shall never separate you from the love of Jesus. Your weakness may alarm you - but it will never cause Jesus to reject you. Remember - your doubtings and questionings things dishonor Jesus. Therefore lift up your prayer against them; make use of every means that is calculated to destroy or suppress them; and never, as you value your peace or the Savior’s honor, never by any means encourage them. He loves you - but not your doubts, your fears, or your misgivings. For these he will reprove you - but cannot cease to love you.”
James Smith
“Because cynicism sees what is 'really going on' it feels real, authentic. That gives cynicism an elite status, since authenticity is one of the last remaining public virtues in our culture."
Paul Miller
God Calls Us
Preparation for Worship
This is the day that you have made, Lord. Help us to rejoice in it and be glad! Remind us of the privileges we enjoy as your people: to come to you in these moments, to confess our sins, to receive forgiveness and give it, to pray and sing and listen, to renew our fainting spirits, to rest in all your promises. Open our eyes to see you, Lord. Open our ears to hear your Word. Visit us through your Holy Spirit, and help us to celebrate our faith. Amen.

Call to Worship - From 1 Chronicles 29
Praise to you, O Lord, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor.
For everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.
Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.
Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.
Prayer of Adoration
O Gracious and holy God, give us diligence to seek you, wisdom to perceive you, and patience to wait for you. Grant us, O God, a mind to meditate on you, eyes to behold you, ears to listen for your word, a heart to love you, and a life to proclaim you, through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

God Cleanses Us
Prayer of Confession
Gracious Father, you give us all good things. You give generously and abundantly, yet we live as if you were stingy and we fail to trust in you. You alone satisfy our deepest longings and needs, yet we seek to satisfy ourselves apart from you. Lord, forgive us.
Silent Confession
Hymn of Confession I Asked the Lord
1. I asked the Lord that I might grow In faith and love and every grace Might more of His salvation know And seek more earnestly His face 2. Twas He who taught me thus to pray And He I trust has answered prayer But it has been in such a way As almost drove me to despair 3. I hoped that in some favored hour At once He'd answer my request And by His love's constraining power Subdue my sins and give me rest 4. Instead of this He made me feel The hidden evils of my heart And let the angry powers of Hell Assault my soul in every part
5. Yea more with His own hand He seemed Intent to aggravate my woe Crossed all the fair designs I schemed, Cast out my feelings, laid me low 6. Lord why is this, I trembling cried Wilt Thou pursue thy worm to death? "Tis in this way" The Lord replied "I answer prayer for grace and faith" 7. "These inward trials I employ From self and pride to set thee free And break thy schemes of earthly joy That thou mayest seek thy all in me, That thou mayest seek thy all in me.
Words: John Newton Music: Laura Taylor

Assurance of Grace — 1 John 2:1-2
“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous one. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. “
Thanks be to God!
Brothers and Sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?
We do.

God Speaks To Us
Sermon Text – Philippians 4: 4-9
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

God Strengthens Us
Confession of Faith – The Apostles’ Creed
Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration
Communion
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Prayers for Reflection
Prayer for those searching for truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.
Prayer of commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
13
Prayers of the People
God who sees, draw in those who languish in the shadows of our city. Sustain the exhausted and lift the heads of the hopeless. Connect your church to the lonely and encourage the sick and homebound. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer.
God who acts, guide the leaders you have given for our benefit. Enable them to use their power and influence for others. Pour into them a hunger for truth, justice and humility. Lend us your wisdom to cherish these things in our voting this fall. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer.
God who serves, make us a body of servants humbly aligned with your agenda. Kindle our imagination and nurture in us the vision of a city renewed. Grant us opportunities to bless our neighbors and our enemies and give us keen eyes to recognize these opportunities. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer.
And for what else should we pray?
[Members of the congregation may add their own intercessions at this time, ending, “For this, O Lord, we pray” and all responding, “Lord, hear our prayer.”]
Now gathering our prayers into one, let us pray boldly as our Savior has taught us:
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
14
Doxology- From Crown Him With Many Crowns
Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side, those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For thou hast died for me; thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity.
15
God Commissions Us
Hymn of Benediction God Be With You Till We Meet Again
Benediction and Dismissal
The Lord bless you and watch over you, the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord look kindly on you and give you peace. And the blessing of God almighty- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- be among you, and remain with you always.
Amen.
Let us go forth to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Thanks be to God!
