Marco Island Rotary Sunrise International
Mission, La Posada de San Francisco, Cuenca Ecuador
Our club is leading an international project in support of the La Posada de San Francisco shelter in Cuenca Ecuador. This project will provide basic and preventative medical and dental services for those who are at or below the poverty level. La Posada provides these services to thousands who, but for La Posada, would not have access to the services. There is glaring deficiency in the availability of basic and preventative medical and dental services. Those served by La Posada live in the City of Cuenca as well as the surrounding country side. Our project focuses on the transformation of existing facilities and new construction in order to provide housing, education and medical units. In addition, there will be space created where meals, and social services and training for both children and adults. By addressing the issues of self-worth and self-reliance for clients, we have seen more self-sufficient individuals, which results in increased trust and reliance in themselves and less and less of the Posada. Recipients of the services are better able to find and maintain jobs and contribute to their community. Local members of the community are directly involved in the planning and execution of this project. The religion of approximately 95% of the local population is Roman Catholic. The church is central to providing for the needs of the indigent and homeless. Many times, government assistance does not reach these individuals. The Tomebamba Club has over thirty years of experience in working with the church and has the support of local governments and school officials to ensure its projects are expedited where possible and receives community support. The Tomebamba Club teams up with not only the church officials and local government officials, but also local community leaders. By receiving community feedback in determining the needs of the community, the Tomebamba Club creates community support to ensure the sustainability of the project, both financially and in enlisting volunteers. Disease prevention and treatment This project drives disease prevention and treatment provides basic and preventative medical and dental services for those who are at or below the poverty level. We also get the word out into the community that the treatments are available and stress the importance of the treatments. La Posada provides these services to thousands who, but for La Posada, would not have access to the services. There is glaring deficiency in the availability of basic and preventative medical and dental services. Those served by La Posada live in the City of Cuenca as well as the surrounding countryside. Care needed beyond the scope of the clinic will be referred to local professional partners in the community that have free care arrangements.

The Rotary Club of Marco Island Sunrise recently provided funding to the Lely High School color guard for equipment needs
The club's philanthropic committee provided a matching grant of $400. Under the matching grant program, the color guard was required to raise the balance of funds needed to purchase new pom-poms independently. The color guard team members raised matching funds through the sale of baked goods known as "Guard Goodies." The Lely color guard is comprised of 18 Lely High School students. The group interprets music played by the marching band at Lely functions, most notably football games. "The color guard really needed new pom-poms and we are glad we could help," said Natalia Armstrong, representative of the club shepherding the request. "The color guard members are really excited that the pom-poms are on their way and will be here soon." The color guard supports Lely's teams, generates excitement in the stands and is a big part of what has been called "Lely Spirit." Sunrise Rotary's matching grant program is designed to maximize effectiveness of grants by requiring the recipient to raise at least half of the amount needed to completely fund a project. It was initiated this year and the club is looking to expand the scope of its community contributions to needy causes through a matching, rather than a fully funding, approach.
