MORE ON PG. 5

Last week was a particularly hectic one with the inspection and World Book Day. I thought that World Maths Day would be pushed to the background. How wrong could one be…

A question was set for each year. The target was to get 66% of the pupils doing mathematics in their own time and place an answer in the ballot boxes that were situated

around the school. Not only was the 66% target surpassed but TPS smashed it with an amazing 84% of the school entering! This was a figure well beyond what I expected, and a big thank you goes to all those that entered.

In each year, one correct answer was chosen at random and the lucky winner was given a chocolate bar and a ‘limited- edition’ maths badge to wear with pride.

The winners were: Year 3 Evie Linden, Year 4 Archie Bollom, Year 5 Sophia Johnson, Year 6 Olivia Hopper, Year 7 Martin Lee, Year 8 Oliver Tucker, Staff Mrs Drew.

The brand-new golden globe trophy was awarded to Loveday with a sensational 85% of pupils entering.

This week has seen many of our pupils taking part in the Taunton Festival of Arts Drama week. While we won’t know all the results until they are collated, I congratulate them all for their willing participation, and make a

special thank you to Mr Riggs and Mr Kirby for all of their hard preparatory work with the students.

On a complete tangent, we occasionally experience cases of head lice in school and as a precautionary measure, it is advisable to check your child’s hair regularly. If you do find any ‘unwanted little visitors’, you can see your local pharmacist for help and advice or visit the NHS choices website on www.nhs.uk/ which has up to date information on effective management of head lice.

Another busy week in Pre-Prep.Thank you for last week! During our inspection

and as always your children were exemplary and so were you. Thank you very much for all your kind feedback and comments. We are really pleased with our feedback and can’t wait to share the full reports and outcomes with you when the time comes.

This week I have done some fabulous Learning Walks. Learning Walks, I hear you say? These are walks in and out of the classrooms to observe classroom practice and to talk to the children about their learning. In order to explain the process further I hope the surrounding photographs will give you a flavour of Year 2, 3 and 4's work this week. We use the evidence that looks at different learning themes to discuss and share best practice. We also use it to monitor the curriculum and moderate pupil achievement.

It has been a great pleasure to spend a total of 10 days so far in Taunton Prep since my appointment last June and every one of them has confirmed to me that I will be taking over the leadership of a truly outstanding school.

It has been wonderful recently to read the glowing new report from the Good Schools Guide and to hear about the very positive feedback from the ISI inspectors. Such high praise from trusted external authorities is a fully deserved affirmation of the tremendous efforts and achievements of all the pupils and staff.

Over the last few weeks, I have led the recruitment of a new Assistant Head of Teaching and Learning to replace Mrs Drew, who announced before Christmas that she would be leaving at the end of this academic year. I am delighted to inform you that we have now appointed Mrs Hannah Seymour, who was the unanimous choice of the interviewing panel at the end of a very rigorous two day process. During

her time with us, Mrs Seymour taught two outstanding lessons and interacted very impressively

with all pupils and staff whom she met. After attending Millfield School, Mrs Seymour obtained a BA (Hons) degree in Early Childhood Studies before completing her PGCE teacher training at Bath Spa University. Mrs Seymour is currently in a

middle management position at Reigate St Mary’s Preparatory and Choir School, line-managing 15 teachers and teaching assistants. Mrs Seymour is a talented musical performer and spent many years singing with the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. She is also a very able sportswoman and was selected for the England Under-18 Rounders Squad. We are all looking forward to welcoming Mrs Seymour to Taunton Prep and we wish her well as she prepares to relocate with her husband to this area.

Whilst I was very much looking forward to working with Mr Newman, I am delighted for him, and he fully deserves his promotion to the Headship of Casterton School. I have already started consulting with my Taunton colleagues and the process is underway which will lead to the appointment of an outstanding Deputy Head. I will write to you again with further news before the end of this term. With change comes opportunity and I have no doubts whatsoever that our Senior Management Team for September will be talented, hard-working, well-prepared and raring to go! I am very much looking forward to becoming Head of such a super school.

TSIMS GET INTO THE SPIRIT OF WORLD BOOK DAY

YEAR 6 BAKE STICKY DELIGHTS

TSIMS celebrated world book day in style this year. Harry Potter was a popular choice of costume and featured in a number of questions in the successful junior book quiz. Students and staff alike enjoyed a 'Books and Biscuits' event at break time and wracked their brains over the innovative ‘Shelfie’ competition during tutor time. Particular congratulations go to Ines Diaz Sanz who won prizes for her Hermione Granger costume and her Harry Potter book review.

Back by popular demand, our Year 7 pupils were treated to a fast moving, interactive Science show from the Explorer Dome on Monday. There were lots of interactive experiments in which solids changed into liquids, liquids changed into gases, and vice versa. These involved the use of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide at -78 degrees Celcius) and liquid nitrogen at a staggering -196 degrees Celcius. This generated a huge amount of excitement

and, unsurprisingly, there was never a shortage of volunteers from the audience. As ever, hammering a nail with a frozen banana proved a hit, as did the dry ice fog generator. Above all

though, this proved a truly memorable way of understanding some of the new concepts introduced recently in class.

In English this week, Year 8 pupils have used rhyming couplets to write their own witches’ spells inspired by our study of ‘Macbeth’. There were some very imaginative ideas when it came to presenting these spells in class including spell books, models of cauldrons and even some cupcakes which were carefully iced to represent each ingredient of the spell!

We have continued with our study of the play in lessons and pupils have been involved in a debate to decide who was responsible for the events leading to Macbeth’s downfall. Ideas will be further explored in a written assignment.

“Simply the Best” held in the Centenary Hall on Thursday 2nd March was a fantastic evening with many talented performances from our able, gifted and talented children in Years 7 & 8. It was a veritable rolling showcase of talent, from the individual instrumental and vocal presentations and the cameo drama parts to the entrancing corporate ballet sequences. The pupils, so well tutored by full-time and visiting staff alike, truly gave

their absolute best.

Mr Brian Bissell, Honorary Governor wrote ‘From our first view of the well laid-out round tables to the stunning climax of the Cantabile Choir, the presentation was so rewarding. The three monologues were not only word-perfect but were delivered with a flow and emphasis which, together with dramatic movement and gestures, made them truly remarkable. The instrumental work, dance-choreography, costumes and competence of delivery alongside the clear pupil-enthusiasm gave us an evening to remember.'

Thank you to all the wonderful pupils who participated.

Year 3 have been busy studying the importance of road building to the Romans and its uses in defence.

Their teachers set them the task of

designing and building a road from Bath to Hadrians Wall in the North East. In addition, they had to survey the Wall and decide whether the design needed changing and what running repairs were required!

When I popped in to have a look at how things were progressing, I was very impressed at the level of discussion and the wonderful models and plans the teams had produced.

What a fabulous opportunity for some active learning! Well done Year 3 and big thanks to Mrs Hill and Mrs Finch for their excellent ideas and resources.

On Monday, the Year 1 children explored our Forest School site on Uppers, hoping to find natural treasures or even some fossils! The children have been learning about Mary Anning, the pioneering palaeontologist, and were very keen to make some exciting discoveries of their own. After a well-earned hot chocolate and biscuit, they continued their work by creating nests for birds. They selected soft, warm, natural materials, which would be suitable for an incubating egg and a fledgling baby bird. Finally, we were delighted to use the new shelter at the Forest School site, for a spot of bird-watching!

BOARDING IS A 'PICNIC IN THE PARK'The run into our Reading Weekend has

certainly been fun and exciting for all involved. Our ‘Picnic in the Park’ was fantastic, with something for everyone. Football, slides, zip wire, swings, hamster wheel… the park had an array of activities for all to enjoy. It was great to be out in the fresh air, to have space and the time to ‘play’ without the desire to be occupied by an electronic device. This trend continued as Thone House pushed beyond their comfort zones at Clip ‘n’ Climb. The sense of triumph and pride having reached the top of the walls, having climbed the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ or having jumped the ‘Leap of Faith’ created a wonderful buzz around the House on Sunday evening.

Throughout the week, the House have had great fun cooking a stir fry, learning card tricks, playing dominoes and creating domino runs. Time has also been spent playing rackets, tennis, completing preps and continuing with arts and crafts projects.

THIS WEEK’S SPORTU11 HOCKEY – IAPS

On Friday 3rd March the U11 team travelled to Bristol to take part in the annual IAPS hockey event. 32 Prep schools from all over the South West took part, all trying to reach the last 4 and qualify for the National finals. Schools were split into 8 groups of 4 and all played a mini round robin in their groups. The top 2 teams from each group were then drawn into new pools with the top teams from other groups. First up for Taunton was Salisbury Cathedral. In a quick start and playing some really good hockey, Taunton went ahead. The final score ended up with a 3-0. Next up was Chafyn Grove. Although a tougher game, Taunton maintained their unbeaten start. The final group game was against Clifton and with another victory we went through as top of our group.

In the next round of group games we were drawn against Stroud School, Kingswood and Blundell’s. First game as a hard fought 1-0 over Stroud. Next up was Kingswood School. In another hard fought game Kingswood were the winners 1-0. This was a real shame as Taunton had two 1 v 1 opportunities with the goalkeeper. Last up was Blundell's. Taunton knew they had to win to have a chance of going through. Blundell's took the lead for Taunton to then equalize.

Blundell’s then scored a second but once again Taunton equalized. In the final minute Blundell’s were awarded and scored a penalty corner to end up 3-2 winners. This meant that Kingswood and Blundell's both went through and qualified for the National finals. Kingswood went on to the win the actual tournament 3-0 in the final.

All of the Taunton team played with real passion and commitment on the day. Although massively disappointed at the end to not go through they can hold their heads high knowing that they played some really good hockey and on another day could have won the whole competition.

Squad - Will Hall, Finley Cooling, Alexander Chaffey, Vaughn Julyan, Sebastian Malley, Tom Newman, Findlay Robertson, Brogan Flitton, Isaac Finch, Henry Kingswell

On Thursday March 23rd the U11’s are representing Somerset in the West Finals. They will be competing against the other top 2 schools from their counties from all over the South West.

Last Saturday the U13 7s rugby team travelled to The Downs Sevens Tournament. Traditionally the winners of the Rosslyn Park national schools 7s wins this event…

From looking at the draw it was clear to see that possibly some of the top schools in the competition had been drawn in the same group. Unfortunately that was our group. As this was a ‘waterfall’ competition to progress and win, all tournament teams had to win their group. With 4 groups of 4, teams progressed to new groups of 4 with teams finishing in the same position in their original groups. First game up was Millfield. In a typically sluggish start, Taunton found themselves one try down within the first 2 mins. With growing confidence and resilience the team then fought back to lead 2 tries to 1. It was unfortunate then that Millfield then scored towards to the end to leave the game drawn. Next up was Moulsford School (who had drawn 10-10 with Colston’s in their first game). Taunton started far stronger in this game and went one try up from the kick off. Similar to the first game, we were not able to close the game out and Moulsford scored late to draw the game. By this point it was clear that the best rugby, by all the teams, was coming from within this group. All of the boys were showing signs of physical tiredness due to 2 hard fought games. Last game up was Colston’s. Taunton knew they had to win by at least 2 tries to go through as the top placed team. A strong start gave Taunton a one try lead for Colston's to score and then Taunton to score again leaving us 10-5 up going into the final minutes. With both teams giving everything it was Colston’s who scored with the final play.

This meant Taunton had drawn all 3 games and went through in second place. Moulsford finished top (who went on to win the cup), Millfield third (who went on to win the bowl) and Colston's fourth (who went on to win the vase).

Taunton then went on to play and beat The Downs and King's Hall comfortably to come against a very determined QEH team in the final match of the day in the shield competition. Unfortunately this was one game too much for the team, as the picture below shows, and they lost 10-5. Full credit to the squad of players – some who played almost every minute, but as important the others who were there in support and played their part when needed. With Millfield 7s coming up and then Rosslyn Park at the end of term there is still plenty of rugby to be played.

Although a time for some well-earned relaxation for some students and staff good luck to the U13 boys who are playing in the Millfield 7s on Saturday and to the runners at the National Preparatory Schools Cross Country Championship at Worcester on Sunday.

U13 RUGBY – THE DOWNS FESTIVAL

This will take place on Friday 17th March during their games lesson for the Year 7s and 8s on Uppers. The Year 2- 4 cross country is as per the calendar and will take place on Monday 20th March on Greenham.

Due to the inspection all sports photos were cancelled. A new date for these will be confirmed by Clarion Call once set with the photographer.

All races were 25m and TPS put in some excellent performances throughout the gala. A special mention must go to the U11 boys team, as all of the individual races in the U11 boys were won by a TPS swimmer. Going into the relays, TPS was just behind King’s Hall on points, but the strength and depth of our team shone through in the relays to result in an overall win for TPS of 165 points to 144.

performances throughout the season the U13 squad set off to the Regionals with high hopes. With five games to play, evenly spaced throughout the day we knew we must stay focused and keep warm to play our very best. Our first opposition was Clifton College, never to be underestimated. After a few turn over balls by Clifton we began to get into our game and won convincingly 9-3. Our second match saw us against St Johns on the Hill, we dominated this game from start to finish, but struggled with overheads in the windy conditions; 12-1 was the final score. Going into the third game it was evident that this pool was a two horse race, between us and Millfield, whose goal difference was the same as ours. Forres Sandle Manor our next opponents, battled hard, but again we

displayed our zoning off their backline passes to turn over many balls in the attacking third, 12-1 win again. Our last two matches were back to back, the last of which was Millfield. We beat Castle Court 12-1 again scoring a goal a minute, but we were slightly behind Millfield now on goal difference. Going into the Millfield match it was important we did not over use the overhead pass as it was proving weak in the wind and we were not performing it well enough, or from the right distance. It is fair to say we lost our way in the first half and gifted them a few balls from giving weak overheads, but in the second half we worked hard and came back at them. It was not enough however and we lost 4-7. This meant we were second in our pool and had to play off against the winner of another, in this case a previous IAPS foe, Dean Close. We turned over a huge amount of ball, but we just could not pass effectively

enough to convert this into goals. Dean Close capitalised on our disarray and played the more controlled netball winning 4-6. Massively disappointed we then played off for 4-6th positions against Millfield and All Hallows. We struggled to gain motivation against Millfield and lost 4-11 which was disappointing, but played more positive Netball against All Hallows. Finishing a credible 5th from 18 in the region.

I have no doubt that these very talented girls will go onto gain County, Regional and National success in the future in Netball. They are on a learning curve and they gained so much from this year and dominated so many teams they should be proud of their successes, but focus on what else they must do to become totally unbeatable.

U11 - FRIDAY 3RD MARCHThe U11a team were enthusiastic and keen to get

started with their IAPS Regional Tournament, even though it was a rainy day. Our first match was against Dean Close, it was a closely fought match with lots of turn-over ball for both teams. The final result was a 2 all draw, which was a little disappointing as we feel that if we had got into our flow it was a match we could have won. Our next two matches were against two very strong teams, Yately Manor and Portsmouth Grammar, who both played very flowing netball, utilising their set plays and court space to beat us. Out final match was against Bristol Grammar, where we played to our strengths and kept the game flowing without giving away possession easily, resulting in a win. Although we did not qualify out of our group, we played some promising netball and are showing potential for the future.

NETBALL IAPS REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS CONTINUED...

I am so proud of this team, both for their excellent performance and the way they conducted themselves at the above tournament.

In a fast paced first match we faced Hazlegrove A, we played well but weren’t quite sufficiently warmed up and lost 2-5. It was a real shame this was our first match, as had we played them later, we may well have beaten them.

Then followed Dumpton School, where we won 3-1, Wells Cathedral School, who we beat 7-0, then Millfield Prep, where we triumphed 6-1. Our final match was against Queen's and in a brilliant team performance, we held them to a 2-2 draw. They eventually won the competition and we were the only team not to be beaten by them!

We narrowly missed qualifying for the final, so faced Chafyn Grove School from Salisbury in the third place play off. By now, the U10As were hungry for success and put in an awesome display of netball to earn a convincing 10-1 victory and claim 3rd place.

Overall, every player did exactly what was required of them and it was so satisfying to see them fulfil their real potential as a team.

Special congratulations to Brooke and Sofia for super shooting under pressure – and to Mr Whittaker, our very loyal supporter!

A most satisfying day at the office :-)

U12C V HAZLEGROVE, WEDNESDAY 8TH MARCH

9-1 loss

A really good game for the girls, where all of their skills and game play seemed to come together into a really good performance. The score did not reflect what was in fact a close game, with Hazlegrove just able to get a few more into the net. There were some lovely moves into spaces by Mina and Lizzie in the attacking circle, both working well together to get under the post. In the centre third, various combinations of Zoe, Bo, Ashie and Charlotte moved the ball quickly up the court with great drives. On the defensive front, Grace, Phoebe and Kate demonstrated long arms and tight marking. Well done everybody.

U11A V HAZLEGROVE WEDNESDAY 8TH MARCH

9-4 win

What a great match for our girls! We travelled to Hazlegrove determined to put into practice all of our hard work in games lessons. The first quarter was a close battle, but we went 1-0 up. As the game went on, we began to find our rhythm and really focussed on maintaining possession, and started to pull away. It was great to see the girls maintain this level of play and get better and better as the game went on. Well done girls, you fully deserve your 9-4 win; a result of your great spirit and determination to improve throughout the season.

On Wednesday 8th March the U13A netball team travelled to Millfield Prep School for the County Tournament. After a quick warm up, we were ready to play our first match against Hazlegrove. Consistent play meant we came out

with a win. With determination levels, higher than ever we set off against Millfield Prep School. With everyone trying their every hardest, we unfortunately couldn’t beat them. We still carried on onto our next match against Wells Cathedral School, with all attackers showing great strength and determination as they put up many goals, resulting in us winning the match. Next up we had Haygrove, who were strong, but still we fought back with everyone striving for the win; because of this determination we won.

Finally, we played Queen's College. After many changes, we had a flying start with both attackers and defenders giving their all, also resulting in a win. Well done and thank you to Esme Hallworth who stepped up last minute and played outstandingly throughout the whole tournament. Overall, we came second in the county so well done girls lets keep it up!
