Forests and the forest-based sector Forests and the forest-based sector in the EU: Some basic datain the EU: Some basic data

Forests cover around 40% of the EU's land area. Around 60% in private ownership (estimated 16 million forest

owners). The average annual volume of timber harvested is slightly over 60%

of the annual forest growth (potential for increased utilisation of wood).

Forest-based industries employed about 3 million people in 344,000 enterprises.

Production value of €365 billion, producing added value of around €120 billion.

“Forest-based industries in the EU are generally competitive, having a very good technical and commercial performance. (…) However, the sector is facing a number of challenges, in particular as regards the

access to raw materials, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, innovation, trade and information of forest-based

products.” (Communication on “Innovative and sustainable forest-based industries in the EU”)
