9. Vision of what we want to achieve with this project (Gunilla)
What is a vision? What is a mission statement?
A vision statement is a description of where a company or individual wants to be in the future. It also explains what the person or business wants to do or get done.
Mission statements are formal written pronouncements of the core purpose of a business or other type of organization.
221st TANGO project meeting (Munich)17-18 June 2013 22
A mission statement sets out the purpose of an organisation.
For example, for Virgin Trains, this is “To run a high quality, efficient and cost-effective rail service”.
A vision goes further. It paints a picture in clear language of where the organisation is going, linked to the behaviours it expects of everyone in the organisation.
Virgin Trains' vision is: “To become the most safe, consistent, reliable and profitable of the train operating franchises in a climate that respects different views and people need not be afraid to be open and honest”.
231st TANGO project meeting (Munich)17-18 June 2013 23
From the discussion at the previous meeting:
• The project consortium develops a network with potential for interaction and communications, building relationships which should extend beyond the four year TANGO project.
• Fellows will also benefit from developing 'soft-skills' through Outreach work.
• The project itself needs a broader vision than the scientific research itself, identifying larger scale benefits. That vision is needed now, as an aim for the project to work towards.
• Long-term vision is to 'make the world a cleaner place' – emphasising the'green' aspect.
• Along-the-way, we expect to gain fundamental understanding of complexinteractions, through a combined experimental, numerical and analyticalapproach.
241st TANGO project meeting (Munich)17-18 June 2013 24
• Research is not for its own sake!
• To encompass all these issues, the vision needs to be on different levels: for society (green), for the group itself (teamwork), positive gender promotion.
• Leadership from the group should inspire common goals and being part of a bigger picture – doing something for our world!
• The TANGO website should promote that vision.
