1 unusual journey with R. Crusoe & Son

Dear Safari Club International Members,

Please come join us on a unique journey to Spain with

likeminded members of Safari Club International. Our

tour has been planned by R. Crusoe & Son, a luxury tour

company with years of experience accommodating groups

such as ours. Our travel has been

meticulously planned and created

specifically with SCI members’

particular interests in mind.

The visit to Spain begins in

Madrid with several days for SCI

members to spend as much or as

little time as they want at the stellar

Cinegetica International Hunting Show. We have also

been invited to participate in two exciting evening dinner

events, one sponsored by the SCI Iberian Chapters, the

other by the Fraternity of Culminum Magister.

We then explore Madrid, with day-trips beyond the

city limits to two historic cities, Toledo and Segovia.

If you have time, join SCI for a post-tour extension to

Barcelona, a magnificent city you really shouldn’t miss.

works by Rubens, Brueghel, Titian, Raphael, Bosch,

Botticelli, Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco, among others.

Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure before we

gather for a group dinner.

Next, a day-trip to Toledo, the city that would be capital.

Toledo was poised to become the seat of a newly united Spain

in the 16th century. In 1561, however, King Felipe II decided

otherwise, moving the court to a relatively unknown Madrid.

Toledo is a cultural crossroads.

Remnants of Roman and Visigoth rule can

be found, and for a time Jews, Muslims,

and Christians lived in relative harmony

(something to be said in a country that

devised the Inquisition).

On a walking tour, visit the

High-Gothic Cathedral of St. Mary of

Toledo, the second largest in Spain. It was begun in 1226 by

King Ferdinand III, and the last Gothic additions were made

in 1493 during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. This is a

repository for important work by El Greco, especially the 15

paintings of his that line the Sacristy walls, including his “El

Expolio” (“The Disrobing of Christ”) on the High Altar.

At the Church of Santo Tomé, examine another El Greco

masterpiece, “The Burial of Count Orgaz,” completed by the

artist in 1588. It recounts the 15th-century legend of a pious

local man, a member of El Greco’s parish church, who was

buried by St. Stephen and St. Augustine, who descended

from heaven.

“The Parasol” by Francisco Goya. A reflection of life in Madrid during the late 1700s. See it at the Prado.

Toledo. We think of it as a more peaceful, mini-Jerusalem.

Museo de Ejército, Toledo.

3 Safari Club International 2016 Members Tour to Spain with R. Crusoe & Son 888.490.8004

We visit both the aqueduct and the Alcázar and its military

museum today. The aqueduct is believed to have been built

during the first century A.D. during the reigns of emperors

Domitian, Nerva, and Trajan. Originally built as a fortress, the

Alcázar has served as a royal palace, a state prison, a royal

artillery college, and a military

academy.

Back in Madrid, we learn firsthand

about the bullfighting tradition

during a visit to Las Ventas arena,

which opened in 1929 and has hosted

some of Spain’s most celebrated

matadors. While here, we have a

private demonstration by apprentices

of Madrid’s bullfighting school and

their maestro (retired bullfighter).

We learn how to handle the red cape

(muleta) and the pink capote. Next, peruse the interesting

collections at the Museo Nacional de

Ciencias Naturales, Spain’s natural

history museum, then take the

afternoon at leisure.

Finally, on Thursday, 24 March, we gather for a celebratory

farewell dinner and fly home the following morning.

If you have time to spare, consider joining us on an optional

three-day post-tour extension to incredible Barcelona.

Stroll through Toledo’s Jewish Quarter and enter El

Tránsito Synagogue. During its heyday, this neighborhood was

one of the most important Jewish centers of the western world.

Next, to the Museo de Ejército, the Army Museum, a

fusion of several military collections amassed in the 19th and

20th centuries. At its core is the

Museum of Artillery and Engineers.

The collections include knives, swords,

firearms, artillery, flags, uniforms,

miniatures, medals, models,

ethnographic objects, and collections

from the Romero Ortiz Museum and

the House of the Dukes of

Medinaceli. It also exhibits remains of

ancient Roman and medieval times.

Now return to Madrid, where the

remainder of your day is at leisure.

Another day-trip from Madrid,

this time to Segovia, whose marvelous

old town is a UNESCO World

Heritage site. Nowhere else in Spain

has such a stunning monument to

Roman grandeur—the soaring

aqueduct—survived in the heart of a vibrant modern city.

In Segovia, too, art has imitated life: Walt Disney is said to

have modeled Sleeping Beauty’s castle in Disneyland on

Segovia’s Alcázar.

The Alcázar in Segovia. Even Walt Disney was moved by its graceful lines.

Take a bullfighting lesson (minus the bull). Madrid.

OPTIONAL POST-TOUR: BARCELONA.

If you have the time, join us after the main tour on a

visit to Barcelona, a heady mix of modernism and

tradition. The city has often been at odds with the rest

of Spain.

On Thursday, 24 March, board a high-speed train

from Madrid to Barcelona. We begin with a smattering of old and new. Las

Ramblas is an iconic, busy street in the central city. Enter

La Boqueria, one of Europe’s largest and most historic

food markets. The Gothic Quarter is the heart of the old

city, with structures dating from medieval and even

Roman times. Step inside the Cathedral de Santa Eulàlia,

begun in 1298. The Picasso Museum offers a fresh

perspective on the work of one of Spain’s great artists.

We then venture beyond the city limits to the

ninth-century Benedictine monastery of Montserrat,Catalonia’s holiest place. We hear the monastery’s

renowned boys’ choir, then head into a wine region called

Penèdes. Here, vintners produce cava, Spain’s answer to

champagne. Tour a winery and have lunch and a tasting.

Our final day in Barcelona focuses on the iconic

work of Antoni Gaudí. Exquisitely talented architect,

eccentric artisan, and modernist visionary, Gaudí

achieved immortality with his masterpieces that adorn

Barcelona. His Sagrada Família is still under

construction. For the last 16 years of his life, Gaudí

focused only on this and considered it his greatest work.

We also visit his stunning Güell Park and Casa Milà, an

apartment building he designed between 1906 and 1910.

Gather for a farewell dinner, then fly home.
