Dialogue 1:

Clerk: Hi! Welcome to Chia! Can I help you with anything?

Customer: Yes. I’m looking for a winter jacket for my husband.

Clerk: Our menswear section is upstairs. Please follow me.

Customer: Oh! This one looks great! Are there any discounts on

menswear?

Clerk: Ah, I’m afraid our sale doesn’t start until the beginning of October.

We have some great deals on the shelves right now though.

Customer: I see. I think I’ll wait until the sale. It’s only another week.

Clerk: Yes. The jacket will be half price when the sale starts.

Customer: Alright. See you next week!

Clerk: Bye!

Jo: Oh, I bought a cream for my spots a couple of weeks ago. I don’t think

Until recently, I never did any of my shopping online. I used the Internet

every day, but I didn’t trust online sellers. It seemed so impersonal! I

liked to bargain face-to-face. Last February, I needed a new TV. The

ones in the stores were really expensive, so I took a look online. The

selection was amazing. There were so many different brands. It only took

a few minutes to order a new TV at an excellent price. It was quick and

convenient. They even delivered it to my house for free. Unfortunately,

the TV wouldn’t turn on when it arrived. I sent it back and eventually got

a new one. I saved 20 percent by buying online, but I spent more than a

month without a TV! Next time, I will buy my electronics in a store so that

I can check them first.

Adam: I want to find a job. Do you have any suggestions?

Paul: Well, first you should write down what kinds of jobs you would like.

Adam: Yeah. I’m thinking I want to work as a pilot, an astronaut, a time traveler,

or a dinosaur.

Paul: Dinosaur? I suggest that you be a bit more realistic.

Adam: Oh, OK. So you’d advise me to be a time traveler then?

Paul: No! How about joining the air force first? They’ll train you to be a pilot.

Adam: Yeah! Then I could fly all day long. I could always become an astronaut

afterwards.

Paul: You’d better study hard if you want to be an astronaut. It’s not easy to get

in.

Adam: Maybe I should build my own spaceship. That would be easier.

Paul: I don’t think so. Why not visit NASA and see how its spaceships work?

Adam: I think I’m going to start now.

Paul: It might be a good idea to go to the space museum to learn more about

your dream job.

Traveling abroad can be amazing. It can open your eyes to different cult

ures and ways of life. There are, however, a few things to watch out for.

The first thing you need to pay attention to is that you are prepared. Ha

ve your passport, your ticket, your insurance, and your visa ready. Get

any medication you need from your doctor to keep yourself healthy. Sec

ondly, when you travel, beware of thieves. They’re always looking for to

urists. Keep your valuable items close to you at all times. Don’t dress to

o expensively, and look out for suspicious strangers. Also, if you have a

ny problems with your passport or visa, just contact your local embassy.

As long as you are careful and keep your eyes open for danger, you will

have a great holiday and peace of mind.

Sally: Oh really? What is it?

Caleb: It was to be a cowboy theme, but the teachers are uncertain about it.

Sally: Oh, yes. It is a European history class after all. You should think about

changing the theme. How about Napoleon or the Middle Ages?

Caleb: Well, maybe. I’m also having reservations about how many people will

come. It’s on a bad date. Most students go home after the last

classes before Christmas.

Sally: I’ll be back home too, I’m afraid. It’s on the 19th, right?

Caleb: Yup. I’m unsure about the whole thing. I don’t know if I should bother

organizing anything at all.

Sally: I suggest that you ask who wants to come. Make a list of the students.

Then you can decide.

Caleb: Good idea! I’ll do that now.

Task IYour friend is coming to visit. He has questions about shopping. Finish the e-mail using the hints.

Hello!

I can’t wait to see you next month. I have a few questions about your country.

I would like to go shopping during my visit. I need to buy some electronics,

clothes, and books. Where do you recommend I go? What are the

cheapest places to buy these things? What are the most reliable places?

Are there good sales in your country this time of year? Are the stores

very crowded?

Any advice would help me a lot.

Thanks!

Leo

Dear Leo,

I’m very happy that you are coming to visit me. The best place to buy

electronics is the Nova Electronics Mall in Taipei. You can get some great

bargains there. For clothes, I suggest you go to the night markets. They

often have the cheapest clothes and a great selection. Prices are good,

but watch out for fake brands. I’m not certain where you should buy books.

Stores are more convenient and reliable than night markets, but products

often cost more there. There are some sales this time of year. The

discounts are excellent, but stores can be very crowded.

I look forward to seeing you.

Regards,

Bruce
