Wireless Broadband Venture in Fuerteventura - Background and Deployment

Fuerteventura, lying at over 620 miles (1000km) from Spain and just over 62 miles (100km) from Morocco is a large island with an area of 668 square miles The spine of hills running down the centre of the island provides the ideal location for situating telecommunications masts giving clear Line of Sight (LOS) From their base in the capital, Puerto del Rosario, Telmax has installed five backhaul links using the airHaul™ Nexus connecting Tetir, Antigua, Corralejo, Pozo Negro and Parque Holandes. The distances span 4.4 miles (7 km), 7 miles (11km), 14 miles (22km), 12miles (19km) and 8 miles (13km). The Internet bandwidth is supplied by a satellite link, via the Eutelsat. Using the airPoint™ Nexus and airBridge™ Total as access points and client devices, they have quickly set up a broadband wireless network, extending their network coverage to beyond the main towns. The subscription cost? As little as 31 euros a month

Presidential Seal of Approval for Indian Village Wireless Connectivity ProjectThe Byrraju Foundation worked together with Venmak Technologies, one of smartBridges’ Partners in India, and Gemini Communications to implement the project. The area is very rural with limited infrastructure. The villages are surrounded by an extensive system of lakes which makes installing normal wired connections from Bhimavaram to the other villages very difficult. Hence, the decision was made to go wireless. Bhimavaram, the main village and hub, has a leased line Internet connection to the state capital, Hyderabad, about 285 miles (450 km) away and is named as Base Station 1. From Bhimaravam, smartBridges access points, the airPoint Nexus, provides coverage to various sectors of villages. Two other base stations were established as repeaters at two different villages, each covering a sector. They are connected via wireless backhaul links using the airHaul Nexus to Bhimavaram.

The backhaul link distances span about 11 miles (18 km).

Each of the villages uses the airClient Nexus as a client device which is installed in the local Ashwini Center. They are able to obtain the full 6 Mbps on the links which span on average between 3-5 miles (6-8 km) with one link as long as 12.6 miles (20 km)

and still able to obtain 1 Mbps of throughput.

Wireless Farm Area Network for Rice Field Research

The Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd (RRAPL) needed to conduct detailed remote monitoring of rice fields in Jerilderie, near Wagga in New South Wales, to determine the best conditions for commercial rice production. They installed two Remote Telemetry Units (RTU) as well as various field sensors to capture this information but needed a communications network to relay the Information to the RRAPL office. The network will also be used to remotely control various equipment used in farming. URSYS, a specialist in satellite and radio telecommunications, was charged with providing this network. They decided on a wireless farm area network which is mobile, could be set up quickly, need no cables to be laid, and most importantly,

could be remotely managed.

They created a wireless network providing blanket broadband coverage across the entire farm. So researchers can securely access and control devices via a standard web browser from anywhere in the world and receive log reports and device alarms via email or even SMS.The airPoint Nexus, the smartBridges access point used in this deployment, is a rugged device that is designed for Near Line of Sight deployments and provides scalable and robust last mile wireless infrastructure. The web based management interface makes it perfect for telemetry uses as it allows for remote management of the device.”

URSYS designed and integrated the 2.4 GHz radio network using two airPoint Nexus as access points and 6 airClient Nexus as client devices to connect the two RTUs back to the RRAPL office as well as other locations such as the Seed Shed and the Weigh station. These links, some up to 2.5 miles (4 km) in length, formed the backbone of the Farm Area Network or FAN that connects the RRAPL’s computers to the Remote Telemetry Units, the Weigh Station and their Seed Shed operation. URSYS was also able to connect the main RRAPL tractor to sense and connect to the nearest access point within the FAN, effectively creating a mobile Hot Spot for Internet access for in-field personnel.

Wireless Bridges across Indonesian Rainforests

JalaWave, an enterprising wireless ISP based in Bandung, West Java in Indonesia, was given a challenging deployment in the middle of dense rainforests in Sumatra, one of the main islands of Indonesia. Their customer, the biggest Indonesian company in the forestry industry, had camps located deep in the Sumatran rainforests which needed to be quickly provided with telephony and Internet for the thousands of workers based in these camps. The wireless network would be the only communication link between the remote camps and the main head office which serves as headquarters. Distances between camps to the local headquarters ranged from six to hundreds of miles (ten to hundreds of kilometers) but no repeaters could be used as they would be unguarded and hence present a security concern.

Page 28: 1 u n w i r i n g o u r w o r l d TM. 2 Presenter Today: Eng. Ossama Hussein Chief Executive Officer CEO.

they installed 29 long distance backhaul links of up to 34.2 miles (55km) Overcoming Line of Sight (LoS) issues, tower height limitations, inaccessible locations that could only be reached by long hours in four wheel drive vehicles, JalaWave succeeded in connecting the camps using smartBridges airHaul Nexus and airPoint PRO Outdoor. They built a reliable Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) to provide telephony, email,

Internet access and even video conferencing.

Wi-Fi Bridges Mountain for South African College

Colleges and universities see providing broadband Internet access as a necessity given the increasing use of the Internet for teaching and research. Providing high speed connectivity gives a key competitive advantage in the crowded education industry, where students base their choices on how well connected the schools are to the Information Age. However,

finding the right kind of connectivity for a multi-campus school is not easy.

Tshwane North College consists of 5 campuses with distances between them ranging from 1.2 miles (2 km) to 25 miles (41 km). None of the campuses has a clear Line of Sight (LOS) to each other as there are office buildings and natural mountains between them. Before calling in Takalane, the communication infrastructure consisted of a mixture of leased and ISDN lines running between the campuses that provided a maximum throughput of 128Kbps.

Page 31: 1 u n w i r i n g o u r w o r l d TM. 2 Presenter Today: Eng. Ossama Hussein Chief Executive Officer CEO.

u n w i r i n g o u r w o r l d TM

The ISDN connections between campuses were too slow to allow for more than one user to log in to the servers at the main campus, which is where registration and billing records are kept. The ISDN throughput was around 6 Kbps and one terminal server session required 20 Kbps. This made it impossible to even transfer a photo and caused frequent time-outs on the network. So all registration and billing transactions were saved in the local campus servers and then transferred by the IT

department personnel to the main campus at the end of the day.

This was a round trip by car of 63 miles (100 km) per day. Therefore, the goal set by the school’s IT department was to improve the communications between the campuses to provide real time information and allow remote management of servers while keeping the costs involved at a minimum.

Attie’s solution was simple; deploy Wi-Fi backhaul links for Intranet and Internet sharing. He thereby not only improved the connectivity between the campuses but actually decreased the costs involved. They provide up to 200 times more

bandwidth for the cost of one year’s leasing of infrastructure.”
