amazing natural phenomena known to man. Tsunamis, sometimes known as “tidal waves” are an issue of concern for millions of people all over the world.

tsunamis everywhere. Every time you are talking about any kind of wave, it has something in common with a tsunami.

Today you will perform a guided web quest to gather information about tsunamis.

Click on the link to open a worksheet with questions to answer. The websites that you need to visit are listed on the sheet. Although suggestions are made for which site will answer which questions, many of the sites have general information relevant to many of the questions, so stay sharp!

4. The Assessment ActivityNow it’s time to put together your proposal. You will create your own tsunami warning system, and convince the U.S. Government why they should adopt your system. Remember, your audience is the government, so your presentation needs to be professional. You may choose any of the following formats in which to generate your proposal or presentation:

-A letter (Business Letter format) -Persuasive Poster-A Power Point presentation -Persuasive Brochure-An Oral Presentation

IMPORTANT! All presentations must address the following criteria: 1) Reasons for developing your system 2) Who is critically effected by tsunamis. 3) How to warn the people endangered by a tsunami. 4) Indicate on a world map (provided) where you would place detection devices WORLD MAP 5) Any other relevant facts or arguments to support your proposal.

Objective: Students will create a tsunami warning proposal in order to demonstrate knowledge of the science and effect of tsunamis and apply knowledge to persuade the government to adopt their proposed strategy.

Suggested Drill: When and where might tsunamis generally occur? Do you think tsunamis are an issue of concern for society?
