3.Success Story Of Dairy Farmer Shri. Tamil Selvam
Shri Tamil Selvam, resident of Indira Nagar, South Andaman started rearing of mulch cow 10
years back . Then he had only 2 nos. cow. Due to financial constrains he was unable to purchase more
cows. There was enormous demand of milk as the milk production in the area was not sufficient to cater
to the local demand. From the income earned by sale of milk from these cows he started increasing the
number of cows by purchase as well as by rearing of the offsprings produced through artificial
Insemination. Seeing the benefit in the business he included his two brothers also in the business.
Presently he has 35 dairy cows with him and is being managed by three brothers. He gets on an average
of 12 liters / cow/ day. He is also producing the green fodder required for his cows in the land available
with him. Now he & his family members are happy with the business and want to continue with the
venture.

2. Success Story of Dairy Farmer Shri. Thiaga Rajan
Shri. Thiagarajan an educated entrepreneur started Dairy farming after assessing the persistent
demand of milk in the city of Port Blair initially during 1992 in a well organized way, but due to tsunami
he faced crisis of feed & fodder, hence had to stop the business. Again he restarted the dairy farming
during 2011 with 6 adult cows and 7 nos. heifers. Presently he has 12 cows and 6 heifers after cullingp of
the unproductive animal with average production of 9 litters / cow/ day. Mr. Thiagarajan maintains the
farm in intensive system of rearing therefore facing shortage of densified feed / fodder. Having
understood the market requirement he wants to expand the farm in a modern & scientific manner with
more animals so that he can diversify the farm products into multifarious business like sericulture, milk
by product units etc.

3. Success story of a SHG with goatery
A group of 7 ladies of tsunami shelter, Namunaghar have started a goat unit by forming
a self help group named “Ujjwal” with the help of WBVHA, an NGO during 2007. The unit has
been started in a small shed made up of locally available materials. Starting with a stock of 16
goats we now have 28 goats after having sold 12 goats of marketable age. The group finds that
goat farming is a lucrative venture, which does not require much attention in terms of feeding
and management since they can be grown on locally available fodder and free grazing. However
for obtaining the best results regular attention towards periodic deworming of goats and care
of pregnant and new born goats is essential. Regarding routine works the members share the
work according to the convenience of the member. This venture is being carried out with
minimal interference to their routine affairs of home & family. It has been learnt that provision
of getting loan from bank exists subject to undergoing training in goat farming and submission
of project report. Accordingly some of the members of the group underwent training at
Livestock Training Cum Demonstration Farm Elephant Point and obtained Certificate /project as
required for the loan. If we succeed in getting the loan we would like to expand the farm for
better profits.

4. Success Story of Mrs. Savitry Devi with goat Farming
Mrs. Savitri Devi a resident of Laxmi nagar, under Namunaghar Panchayat having started with a pair of
goats few years back without any preparedness for a venture. When she felt that these goats can be reared
without much difficulty in arranging feed and fodder and providing them shelter she kept the kids born out of
these goats for expansion of the stock. And when the number increased to 08 she made a small shed with locally
available materials in front of her residence i.e the barrack type quarter. From this initial stock she has sold more
than 10 adult goats and presently having 29 numbers. For maintaining the stock no extra effort is being given as
they are allowed for open grazing during the day and providing them locally available tree leaves during night
hours. No expense is met in terms of concentrate feeding to these goats. She seeks assistance from Veterinary
Dispensary Elephant Point in case of any health problem in the stock and for periodic deworming of goats and
hence there is no significant mortality in the stock. Marketing of goats also is not a problem since the business
people purchase the goats from her door step. She is content by supporting my family with this extra income as an
auxiliary part of the earning.

5. Success Story of Mr. Nirmal Roy
Mr. Nirmal Roy, is a landless farmer residing at Mithakari working as a caretaker to a land where
apart from growing vegetables have started a goat unit. Initially he started with three numbers of goats
to utilize the waste vegetables & vegetable plant residue from the field. Subsequently this stock
increased to more than 10 numbers. He felt that goat farming is highly profitable specially when there is
arrangement for fodder. Since the green fodder in the form of farm residue is sufficiently available no
concentrate feed is being given to these goats. He is not paying any special attention to these animals
except sending them for open grazing in the nearby areas during day time and seeking help from the
Veterinary Dispensary for periodic deworming and for any health problem in goats. One of the risks he
encountered during goat farming is that mortality in kids will be more if they are not protected from
inclement weather and not given proper maternal milk. From this stock he has already sold 5 numbers
of goats and 15 numbers of goats have been kept as the breeding stock. He is now content that he is
able to manage his family smoothly with this additional income along with the income from agriculture.

MGNREGA, she maintains goat rearing as subsidiary occupation. Since the demand of goats is constant
in the area she is encouraged with the business and wants to expand the stock. She rears the goats on
